The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

My husband and I stayed at the Claremont for our anniversary. The recent upgrade is wonderful and the staff couldn't have been nicer! What a beautiful spot. Our room had a wonderful view, bed, and bath and we spent the day reading the NYT Sunday issue at the fabulous pool. Heaven. I want to move in!

We stayed here on a family staycation and loved it. The staff is lovely and eager to help you. The kid friendly pools are a blast. Three hours of child care per night was a surprise bonus. The restaurants were very good and we loved Edie the dog.

The hotel property is lovely and the fitness and pool area were top-notch. However, our stay was marred by the noise in our room each night. Even though we paid a premium for a bay view room, we were given a room on the first floor (one floor below the lobby), where you could see the bay from a remote distance if you squinted. Because this room is located directly underneath the wood floor of the lobby, all night long we were awakened by luggage carts rolling and loud footsteps smacking on the floor above. I would recommend refusing a room on the first floor no matter what. We were also a bit put off by the bottled water policy. We were told by some staff that we were entitled to 2 free bottles of water daily. However, when I called the front desk to order this water, they sent up 2 waters in fancy bottles and charged us $20 including in-room service fees! Most disheartening of all is that about halfway through our stay, we received a text from the hotel inquiring about our satisfaction. When I texted back describing these problems, they never answered! Disappointing to say the least. I was however impressed by the courteousness and proficiency of the staff. There was not one employee who was not nice and helpful. Two that were especially outstanding were Martin in the valet area and Shannon in the Limewood restaurant, both of whom went out of their way to be kind and supportive to us after we dropped off our student at UC Berkeley. If we decide to return to the Claremont, we will definitely be staying on an upper floor.

The grounds and lobby are very impressive and it is very well located in Berkley. Rooms are hit or miss from what I've read here from other travelers. I guess I got the "miss." Room with a view of the hills turned out to be a view of the garbage (photo posted) with loud noises at night because of deliveries and trash disposal. Also, loud noise from outside AC units. Try your best to get a good room if you decide stay here.
