The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

Our room was lovely. The hotel decor is fabulous. Sadly, they fell short on customer service. I don't mind some mistakes, but at a hotel of this caliber, they better be rare. Upon checkin, they failed to tell us that everyone has to be registered separately to go to the pool area. Our adult sons live in the area, so they came over to join us for a swim before a birthday dinner celebration at the hotel's restaurant. We were turned away as they told us only my husband's name was on the reservation, so only he could swim. Really, that is what $600 a night gets you-attitude? So, we brushed that off and decided to focus on the birthday dinner. There were 8 of us for that. Our waiter was darling, but not very experienced. We were fine to let that go. Everyone has to start somewhere. The halibut was excellent, but the steaks and pork was truly poor quality. So half the table was thrilled with their meal, and half very disappointed. They did bring lovely birthday desserts, so that was a big plus...but didn't make the steak any less tough. One meal was returned it was so bland-lovely presentation, but not good quality pork. So, if you eat at the restaurant, stick with seafood and you will be fine. After dinner we retreated to our room only to find the cup in the bathroom was used. We called for housekeeping, only to get a busy signal. Then we tried all the buttons, only to get busy signals. Finally, we dialed zero and got the front staff. They apologized and said they would send someone up right away. 45 minutes later we were sleepy and tired of waiting, so called back down to cancel. Sometime after 11:00 there was a loud knock on the door. We had been sleeping for 30 minutes at that point and ignored the knock. Then the phone rang and it was the front desk saying that housekeeping was there to deliver our requested glass. The same front desk who we had cancelled the request with. Ugg. The next morning we ordered oatmeal for breakfast. As I was eating it, I found a dried up piece of macaroni and cheese in my oatmeal. Seriously grossed me out and made me question sanitation in the kitchen. We have stayed at many luxury hotels and with luxury generally comes excellent service. Nobody was horrible, but nobody seemed to know quite how to do their jobs at the level that one would expect for a luxury hotel. It is too bad management hasn't spent more time training all those sweet young employees what true customer service and true kitchen cleanliness looks like.

My wife and I recently enjoyed yet another wonderful stay at the Claremont. We live in Oakland, but occasionally like to treat ourselves to a night away in luxury, and this is the only place we will go. We are treated wonderfully by an attentive staff from the door to the front desk to housekeeping. The rooms are always immaculate and the grounds pristine. We will continue to come back again and again to indulge ourselves while staying close to home!

The hotel is beautiful! There are wonderful views of the Bay from the lobby, pool and even our guest room. Service was topnotch. We enjoyed relaxing by the pool and using the spa. I even got to pet Edie, the resident dog!

A fabulous hotel on our way to and from the California Wine Country. Loved the location of the Claremont Club and Spa in the Berkeley Hills with incredible views of San Francisco Bay from our beautifully appointed room and the deck of the Limewood Bar. Makiva White at the Front Desk provided exceptional service from the moment we checked in until we left for our weekend in the Wine Country. The Limewood Bar offered great drinks and amazing food for both lunch and dinner. Definitely our favorite Fairmont hotel in Northern CA!
