The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

Haven't stayed here in a while so I was really pleased to see the rooms were updated recently. Le labo toiletries, marble, crisp, clean bathroom albeit small...I had a pretty view of th bay. The service was very accommodating and polite. Two Resturant options with great views and outside seating are terrific. Tasteful, younger crowd even during the mid day. Was a little bummed that the smell in the hallways were more like a hospital than a spa though. I think they need a more pleasing disinfectant.

We stayed here, 2 nights to be closer to my son't wedding. I think one thing you have to keep in mind, when you stay at an older place, is that the configuration of the room and general space is different than a newer hotel. The room was pleasant but a bit tight. When you open the door, one of the queen beds is 2 feet away. The bathroom had very little counter space for toiletries. The shower was a bit unusual. I could not slide the furthest glass door to the left to turn on the water. It was locked. So, you had to get in to turn on the water. The controls were confusing. It would have been nice to have instructions. Great supply of towels. Tons of pillows on the beds. The bed was very comfortable and I actually hated to get out of it in the morning! The closet is small but there were 2 luggage stands and plenty of drawers. The hotel, itself, if beautiful. The lobby is open and has interesting conversation areas with art. Exiting the parking lot is a challenge. The gate is not synchronized with the traffic light. I suggest if you have to be somewhere on time, you allow an additional 15 mins to get out of the lot. When we checked out, there was no wait for someone to come up and help us with our luggage. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. This is a beautiful place but expensive.

My spouse and I enjoyed a three day stay at the Claremont. Our room had a beautiful view of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges on clear days. Staff went out if their way to make us happy. I had a massage in the spa which was great. Also worked out in the gym which was good even though it is in a temporary facility at the moment. Look forward to another visit.

If travel takes you to Berkeley, the Claremont is a most pleasant place to rest. The rooms are comfortable and nicely appointed and stocked, and our brunch at the Limewood restaurant offered the elegant food and service of a fine hotel.

This hotel was beautiful and had a very accommodating staff. From the doormen, to the front desk, waiters, maid service- everything was outstanding. My mother needed to be closer to an elevator, so their moved our rooms the following day. The room service was excellent- I mentioned I was sharing one dish with mom so they split it in the kitchen, brought up 2 sets of silverware & 2 glasses of water without me asking! Free newspapers were delivered, champagne served in the lobby. What a beautiful hotel, lobby & restaurants. Uber was there in 2 minutes each time I needed one. Superior- can't wait to go again!
