The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

I paid $262 for a room with a view of the back of the hotel, it was a midweek last minute booking for work, so it's no skin off my nose but its lame and this room shouldn't be more than $200 ever. I checked in at 7 and I'm checking out at 11 so I can't use the resort at all because everything is closed it appears or there isn't anyone or anything directing me to a pool or hot tub or anything like that. So I guess my comment is really if $262 is your discounted write off room why not up sell it with an early morning massage or bath ritual in the spa. I mean who are you catering to here? It just seems poorly managed. This place should be hopping every night with locals and it's dead. I've been to spas all over the California and this one fails before you even get in the door and continues to fail at every turn. There are much better places to spend $300 a night that actually extends service for that price. I probably won't be back. It's too bad because this place could really be hot, managed correctly. Stop trying for that exclusive money go for the upper middle class DINKs- that's your money demo and a repeat customer looking for a local staycation, they spend money on food and drinks and spa treatments but the prices can't be the cost of the one nights stay, that's an ineffective cost comparison that one of those this comes out looking bad. You want your value to be the room and the value added be the massage. That's common sense. None of the pricing makes any sense and just seems like typical California gouging.

The Claremont hotel has a pool and rec facility for members and hotel guests. The pools are magnificent and the complex is so well run that it is virtually always possible to take a swim. There are three pools. The largest is probably olympic size and is roped for laps. A smaller one is still a large lap pool but also has scheduled activities such as laps supervised by a trainer. There are also a separate wading pool and an area of the largest pool for hanging out with children. The pool opens before dawn and closes late. The pools are sparkling clean. Excellent locker room facilities. The temperatures of the pools are in the 80s with the larger pool a little warmer than the smaller lap pool. The temperatures are posted (80 and 84 when I was there in March). The only possible impediment for a great swim is an electrical storm. It is California so the outdoor pool is open all year. In March, I swam in the rain. The air was cool but the pool temp was perfect. I imagine that in the summer, the facility may be much busier than when i visited in the winter, but it is extremely well-run with posted rules for sharing lanes, so I trust that it is still possible to get a good swim any time of the year. I hope to go back and see!

I am a regular visitor to UC Berkeley. I am not sure what is happening with Berkeley accommodations, but the hotel choices are so limited, and the rooms are so overpriced for what they offer (and in some hotels just plane out right dirty, dirty, dirty), that it is insane to try to stay there during a UC Berkeley event, or even on a "normal day". Claremont is by far the best choice in town, but still not quite up there in service and looks to justify the price. I'd stay there more often if the rates were more reasonable. Instead, I often opt for the Hyatt Place in Emeryville. According to some other reviews it used to be even worse! Wow! If you are a real estate developer, build a few higher-end hotels there, keep them clean and well-serviced, and you will be booked up all the time!

I loved staying at this property. I cannot say enough about the wonderful staff and the location. There are several choices in restaurants and plenty of fun activities between Tennis, exercise classes and spa services. The outdoor pool area is large and well maintained. There is also a cafe conveniently located near the pools/gym/jacuzzi which makes having lunch, coffee or snacks really easy and pleasant. Nice staff here as well. This is a well maintained and lovely spot for travelers to Berkeley and environs. They also have a canine ambassador in the lobby which is a friendly touch. I would definitely go back. Breakfasts are large and the kitchen accommodated my very healthy request(s) every day. Drinks in the lobby bar were great and the "nibbles" delicious and good sized. We did not have any dinners on site as we were out with friends who live in the area. Parking is available on site for a fee and it's easy to come and go through gates. Valet parking available as well and the guys couldn't be nicer! "Summer" did a fantastic manicure and pedicure for me. I also had a massage which included the use of bamboo sticks (heated). Not sure if it's for me, but I wanted to try it out. Spa facility is clean and well run. Friendly and helpful staff. It can get busy, but remains calm, which is important. I took two spinning classes, both good and also a total body bosu ball class, which was not for the faint of heart. . . but I love an athletic challenge. Got some great workouts in and loved it! As a hotel guest I could use the athletic facilities free of charge and didn't pay extra for classes, so that was a nice perk. There is an extensive schedule of classes, so something for every level of fitness.

This was my first stay at the Claremont- I loved it! My sister and I stayed for a girls getaway, it was perfect. The food in both restaurants was consistently excellent! The spa and the fitness center were both good. Our room was clean, comfortable and spacious... and we had a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. I love this hotel, the sitting spaces are just beautiful and comfortable. The staff was always kind and friendly. We will definitely be returning. I highly recommend this hotel.
