The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

I love this hotel. I had stayed here a few years back, prior to the renovation, and I loved it then. Fabulous hotel entrance, updated restaurants and the rooms are beautiful. The views cannot be beat, particularly sunset when the fog starts to roll in. Excellent service in all parts of the hotel. I enjoyed food at all of the restaurants and it was fabulous (easy for them to accommodate my gluten allergy). Access to the Claremont Club for working out and the pool is another plus. The spa is a must. A real treat with fabulous staff and a nice shop to waste money in. My room was beautiful, large, and very quiet. I hardly heard anyone during my entire stay and I slept like a rock. Not much around the hotel, but easy to get anywhere. I highly recommend.

This hotel is great in terms of service, quality, and overall experience. We have been here multiple times and been very pleased. However, we stayed here recently during an unusually hot weekend and the AC throughout the hotel was seriously lacking. The rooms were hot, the restaurant was hot, and the conference rooms were hot. It was pretty miserable to sleep and it was not corrected during our stay. The hotel is old, but definitely needs an upgrade in the AC system. If you go any other time, you will be extremely satisfied.

This is truly and outstanding establishment. The facilities are just beautiful, and the renovated hotel has elegance, charm and grace. The staff are oustanding, warm and friendly. It is the place to stay in Berkeley, on the top of the hill, surrounded by beauty. We loved it. Look forward to staying again. Give it a go.

This is a beautiful hotel in an excellent location. My room was spectacular and the views were beautiful. I was so excited to learn that this beautiful hotel is dog friendly. The food from room service was delicious and arrived very quickly each time I ordered. The food in the restaurant/bar was delicious and we returned several times. My daughter and I also had wonderful, relaxing spa treatments. The location is perfect and easily walkable to some great shopping and restaurants. Also, the concierge service was exceptional. The concierge made last minute arrangements to have my husband picked up from SFO and again last minute arrangements to take us back to SFO when we had to leave.

This is a hotel with a lot of character on the outside its architecturally a great building but sadly the interiors are completely characterless its as if the designers decided to create a Holiday Inn motel on the inside of this wonderful building. The gym and spa and pools are excellent as is the service which is thoughtful and attentive. The room we stayed in had a tiny bathroom with 1970s era fittings. This could be an outstanding property but it falls short of being the grand luxury hotel it could be.
