The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

This hotel is beautiful. It has so much history and has been around a long time, but the hotel interior is modern and fresh. This room was one of my favorite hotel rooms I've stayed in. I had an upgraded King with a bay view. I couldn't get enough of the view. The hotel was very clean - the housekeeping and turn down team was on it - yet I never saw them. They never disturbed me. The food and service was excellent - only one issue with timing at dinner during a busy time. We also enjoyed the spa. The area is very charming as well.

My friend was awakened in the middle of the night by screams coming from next door. Security told her it was a "frequent guest" and one of them had "medical issues". No offer to move her room or to move the very valued guests who were disturbing her. At 1:30 in the morning the screams resumed along with sounds of violence. Pretty upsetting experience. When reported to the front desk, she was pretty much dismissed with a perfunctory "sorry". Obvious lack of concern for her well being. It was her last day in the United States and we were really looking forward to making the most of it. She was exhausted by lack of sleep. It's a beautiful hotel with gorgeous rooms and, mostly, friendly staff. Quite marred by the lack of sympathy or concern not only by the front desk but also by the manager.

We recently stayed at the Claremont for our anniversary and the staff was so nice. We received a room upgrade, champagne, and a card from the staff. The hotel is gorgeous and pool area is amazing. The best getaway ever!

Unless the name is what you are in love with, look elsewhere. Very limited in dining experience, not worth the money they charge. The pool area in the summer is not adult friendly. If you like poolside relaxation, you will not get it. The pool area is shared with the club and very child friendly. The view is beautiful.

Came here for 4 days conference and the food quality at lunch and dinner is bad. The fish is overcooked. Room has no water and cost $8 per bottle. Aircon in noisy and when checked out the breakfast bill was charged wrongly for things you don't eat. Parking is expensive at $33 per night and worst can't pay by visa somehow.. bad experience ..but people here is nice
