The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

The hotel has has some very nice public spaces with great views. Our signature room was quiet and large but had no comfortable place to sit. Just a table with a couple of chairs. Such a large room should have had a sitting area it was just wasted space. The Clairemont Club is rather tired and in need of a significant remodel. Our arrival experience was not a good. Even though we accepted the offer online, the hotel front desk manager refused to honor the room standby upgrade price which was offered on the Fairmont site. We eventually received the upgrade but at a higher cost than posted on the site. A nice hotel yes, a great hotel no.

The Claremont Hotel has always been one of the San Francisco Bay Area's grand hotels. Located on one of Berkeley's sun-drenched hills, this elegant white landmark has stood out for over one hundred years (est. 1915). Completion of a complete renovation of the hotel last December has brought the grand dame into the 21st century with elegantly understated interiors in grey, lavender, white, yellow and mahogany. The public rooms (lobby bar and Hillary and Tenzing Everest-themed library-styled lounge, Limewood and Meritage restaurants with their expansive views of the SF/Oakland Bay Bridge, City skyline and Golden Gate, Spa and tennis/swim/athletic club, and meeting spaces) combine to present sheer luxury. The food was creatively prepared, perfectly presented, notable in a town where inventive dining is common. Locally sourced baked delicacies were presented (Berkeley is renowned for its bakeries). The Claremont's staff was perfectly schooled and attentive, but not puffed up with themselves. A concierge mentioned she'd worked at the hotel for 30 years... now, that's true tradition, no facsimile. Bravo, Fairmont! Every staff member was at the top of his/her game (a tip of the hat to the hotel's GM). This is a great hotel that has solidly earned four stars, but deserves five.

We came with our 6 month old and since the club has complimentary child care and the hotel offers cribs in rooms we assumed the hotel is pretty family friendly. The club is definitely very family friendly. The child care facilities are nice and the staff was friendly and very available. There are several different swimming pool areas for kids, and lap swimming area for adults. So we did lap swimming, then took our baby to the kids swimming pool and everyone there was super friendly and we had a great time. However our hotel room left much to be desired. It was stuffy. Outside temps were a nice 68, in the room was 73 all night with the fan blasting. The only place to put the crib has a window right above it and the blind was not good enough to block out light so that area was the first to light up at 5am, not good when you want your baby to sleep longer. Another thing that surprised me was the hotel put sheets in the crib that were not fitted and quite wrinkly. Although our LO is already pretty mobile, he sleeps on his tummy and we didn't want sheets bunching around his face, so we took the sheets away and just had him sleep on the thin mattress. But that made me feel like the hotel didn't cater to families with small babies.

We stayed at this Fairmont property while visiting family in the area. The building is beautiful, in a scenic setting. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. Our room- Bayview deluxe- was spacious and well appointed , the bed and pillows very comfortable. The bathroom was hugh, with a large soaking tub and an enormous shower. All the bath products are the Fairmont Rose line, so lovely. The hotel itself is opulent in the style of the old grand resort hotels with fine dining and recreational facilities. We are planning our next trip back

I am here for my wedding on Sunday, that's why I booked a standard suite. When I first came into the room, everything feels old, the air was stuffy, and things were dusty. I looked out of the window and got even more disappointed. Despite the fact that this hotel has a stunning outlook, the view from my room is horrible - you won't expect it to be sth outside the window of a suite. It looked like a hotel situated inside an industrial area. I am very upset now, especially because my photographer can't take any picture of me or my gown near the window. And for these 3 nights, I got to bear the ongoing runny nose and patches of urticaria on my body due to allergy to dust mites, probably. I wish I have chosen another hotel.
