The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California

Views of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline are killer at the Claremont Hotel Club & Spa. That might be why the property was so appealing to a Kansas farmer who struck it rich during the Gold Rush and built an elaborate English castle for his wife. After a fire destroyed the castle the land changed hands, and was allegedly won by a developer in a game of checkers. When the Claremont opened in 1915, it housed a radio station and private school. Today, its architecture gives the resort a timeless sense of grandiosity.

Dive into one of the resort's lap pools to get your blood flowing. Recline under a blue umbrella on a poolside lounger while a waiter serves a seared Ahi tuna niçoise salad for lunch. Take an afternoon drive to downtown Berkeley, checking out the shops on Fourth Street on the way to Berkeley Marina. Sip chardonnay as the Golden Gate Bridge twinkles in the setting sun.

I traveled to the Bay Area for business this month and decided to return to the Claremont Club in Berkeley for two of the nights I would be in town. I found a good rate for a standard king room on my company's travel site and arrived at the hotel on a Wednesday afternoon. Check in was friendly and efficient. My room was on the 5th floor and faced the back side of the hotel. The room was very comfortable, clean and nicely decorated, but I felt it would be cramped if I were traveling with another adult. The wifi is excellent and I was able to work productively in my room as well as in the lounge areas and restaurants in the hotel. On the food, its pricey, but well prepared, I had a burger in Limestone one evening at the bar. It was cooked perfectly, but had an odd wasabi sauce on it that warped the flavor. I had breakfast the next morning in Heritage and it was very tasty, but $30 for oatmeal, a side of bacon and coffee is steep, I'd planned to enjoy the club, but my work schedule got in the way. However, I did drop by one morning to see the gym and the staff there was super friendly and offered me a full tour of the club if I had time. Access to the club is available for all hotel guests, even on the day of checking out, which is a nice perk. Claremont is a great hotel in a somewhat secluded area of Berkeley. The layout is great and it has a classic architectural feel as you walk through the hallways. This is the kind of hotel where you feel like you are on a movie set every time you descend the stairs and enter the lobby. It has become one of my favorite places to stay in the San Fran area and I hope to return on a non-business trip sometime soon.

My son and I stayed here for our football trip to Cal. This place is truly a treat. Room was spacious, well laid out, clean and very nice. This old hotel has super wide hallways and very spacious public areas. We had cocktails and a oysters in the bar. Very friendly staff with well made cocktails. On our second trip to the bar we sat outside and enjoyed the view along with a charcuterie board and a cheese board. Breakfast in the restaurant was also excellent. Huevus Rancheros was great. Again staff was very good. Great stay!

Great location, grand hotel and property; beautiful common areas; great spa but expensive; room cleaning not great- dirty handprints on doors and thermostat; peeling ceiling plaster in room; smelly pillows with body odor; dirty bar area in restaurant (very dusty); staff not very personable; great food

A wonderful hotel that I shall revist when I have a chance. It has a lovely location and ideal to stroll around Berkley village.Rooms are very good and gives a wonderful view over San Francisco Bay. They have a first class resteuarant and a nice bar. This is value for money and I recommend this hotel, even if is a little pricy.

Stayed here only for 1 night, it's a pretty old property but looks to be well maintained and rooms and common areas are updated to elegant modern style. Did not have time to check out the spa, but looks lovely (and pricey!). Staffs were helpful and friendly.
