The Mandala Hotel easily wins the description of ‘superb’. Positioned opposite the Sony Center, it is minutes from the main subway lines and stations, from Tiergarten (which is excellent for fellow morning runners!), from two very large shopping malls covering every shopping need you could have (supermarkets to clothes to furniture to eateries etc), restaurants and bars are around the corner and, for entertainment and culture, you are close to the Berliner Philharmonie, multiple museums and cinemas. The hotel itself is a quiet oasis of calm and luxury. It’s clear from check-in and throughout my stay that the staff take care and pride in ensuring the guests have a wonderful stay and experience no problems, have no query left unanswered. I’ll admit, I’m very particular about my hotel suite and noise – interior noise, poor soundproofing between rooms, people noise, noise from TVs etc is my biggest anxiety and issue with so many hotels. The Mandala Hotel, however, I had nothing to fear. I had asked for a quiet Executive suite on a high floor with a good view and a corner suite, overlooking the main street, on the ninth floor with a view of the Berliner Philharmonie was what I got and it was perfect. Admittedly, it might not have been to some people’s tastes regards noise since the traffic noise, with the windows open, could bother some but it was not noticeable with the windows shut. Noise from cars, trains or planes etc does not concern me. Of course, occasionally, you hear the guest above you scrape a chair or pad about but I think I have to accept that you are never going to find a hotel which eliminates ALL noise! The suite has a small two ring hot plate and an ample refrigerator and a dishwasher. For those who prefer to prepare their own food, this is wonderful. There is enough crockery and cutlery for four people but you have to ask to borrow pots and pans. I did but they looked a little over-used so I bought my own from the Rewe supermarket on the lower ground floor of the shopping arcade around the corner. There is a desk at which to work at, plenty of power sockets and a separate dining table and chairs. The bathroom was faultless and the furniture, the bed in particular, very comfortable – even the pillows were good and that IS a rare thing in a modern hotel. The TV channel selection, if I had to give an minor negative point, is very limited for the non-German speaker – international channels are news channels. However, Wifi is free and good enough for you to use Netflix, for example. To give an idea of how fantastic the suite felt – calm, comfortable, perfectly fitted out to give a sense of quiet luxury which does not overwhelm – I could easily live in the suite for months! Wardrobe space is good, the suite feels airy – not boxy like some hotel rooms – making you feel like you are in a small home of your own. It is clean and maintained as such – not once did I think it was not spotless. I didn’t eat in the restaurant but I understand that it’s very good and very popular amongst Berliners. I didn’t try the spa either but the treatments available were excellent and priced as you would expect. A taxi to Berlin Tegel Airport is about €35. I am so impressed by this hotel that I have already booked a return stay….requesting the exact same suite as before. Truly a magnificent hotel!
