Spread out at the foot of the lush green hills of Navarre, in the inviting Basque Country of southwest France, Ostape, a member of the prestigious Home Like Collection, offers a seductive blend of comfort, refinement and tranquility. Within villas crafted in traditional Basque style you will find incredibly spacious guest rooms with balconies or terraces overlooking the mountains. Anchoring the estate is an 18th-century manor house, which serves as home to a gourmet mecca. Incorporating produce from the estate, the restaurant offers traditional Navarrian cuisine interpreted by Alain Sailhac, disciple of the worldâ€(TM)s most acclaimed Chef, Alain Ducasse.

Our room was probably the best hotel room I've ever been allocated - huge, well-equipped, tastefully furnished - I could happily have lived in it permanently. The setting is stunning and even though the weather was terrible during our stay we were still able to appreciate the views from our windows and the balcony between downpours. Like other guests, we had tremendous fun riding around on the golf buggies, but the roads are steep and I can see why some guests might find this scary especially in rainy weather. For the money though, and given how the hotel pitches its offering, there were quite a few negatives. Our TV didn't work (the technician came to fix it very quickly, but we were still unable to access some channels) and perhaps more annoyingly, the internet service was truly terrible (a weak signal, or no signal at all). Given that there was a desk area in our room, I assume the management expect guests to be able to work there, but frankly it would be impossible to depend on the wifi for Zoom calls or downloading of documents etc. Far more trivial (but still irritating in a hotel at this price point) was the lack of ordinary teabags and any form of milk or creamer. We phoned reception to ask for some and were brought just two teabags! And as other reviews have mentioned, the leisure facilities are very tired - steam room out of order, gardens and furniture around the pool unkempt etc. and you have to request the sauna to be turned on and wait half an hour if you want to use it. I have given four stars for our stay as the room was so far above average that to give it only three stars seems unfair - but there would be a lot to address before I would give it five. Regarding the restaurant, we had booked for dinner but were not asked about any allergies. When we sat down, we saw that every starter on the two set menus contained seafood of some kind... my allergy. The head waiter did not offer any substitutions and could only suggest that I eat a la carte - but then my husband wasn't allowed the set menu either, as it has to be taken by all members of a table. Therefore we both ate a la carte, and the food was lovely, but it ended up costing rather more for three courses than we had planned for!

We booked into this hotel for a 5 night stay. However on arriving here we decided it was not for us. The location is spectacular and the room we were offered (a suite) was large but it had a fusty smell and it was dark and unwelcoming. The view was obscured by large trees. It is difficult to get around due to the gradient of the area and you given an electric buggy which was quite good fun. The staff were very nice but when we said we would eat at 7.00 they told us service didn't start till 7.30 so we said we would come down to have a drink and enjoy the view. They told us that the staff had dinner at 7 and you could only have a drink when you were at dinner. HELLO??? This is a hotel charging a large sum of money. The restaurant was then closed for two days and fully booked for the third day so we had to find meals elsewhere. The driving was precarious because of the location of the hotel so we asked for our money back. There was no argument and they returned it and charged us for the one night we were there. This is a very sad situation because the location is spectacular but you really need to up your game if you are catering for tourists. It would have been very difficult to have an evening meal and then return home because the location of the hotel was not lit up the mountain. I must mention the restaurant though as the food we ate in the evening was excellent. Would not return

It’s quite a drive up in the hills but the reward is there. Beautiful Basque style main house and cottages on a hill, with absolute stunning views across the Pyrenees hills/mountains. Large swimming pool and wellness with same view. The restaurant is Michelin star quality, staff very kind and attentive. Our room was exceptional, everything in style without being over the top. Thank you for a great stay.

This was a last-minute booking as we checked out early from a disastrous hotel in Lourdes. The staff were hugely accommodating, and couldn't do enough for us. We were made to feel very welcome! The rooms were beautiful, the location absolutely stunning, the food amazing. We are all gluten-free and the staff went out of their way to make sure we were catered for. My only slight criticisms are that there was no drinks service by the pool, and the gym is in need of a bit of TLC - old machines, and no weights. However, it was only my husband and son who do weights workouts - and we made up for this by having a good swim and going for a long walk up a very steep hill so they were happy!

We visited this hotel using a Wonderbox Spa experience. On checkout we were forced to pay for treatments that were meant to be included. Because of our Wonderbox voucher we had a quite limited dinner choice. Reception staff were wholly unsympathetic to our distressing and expensive encounter. A month later and we still have no reply to our letter of complaint. Basically, Ostapé spoiled my 70th birthday treat with their casual attitude to us, their clients. What a shame; it should be the best place to stay in the French Basque country.
