Reviews for Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort

Unparalleled, the Nimmo Bay Experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 months ago

I had the pleasure of travelling to Nimmo Bay Resort in September with my sister. Before arriving, we followed Nimmo Bay’s social media, read any review we could find and searched the internet for articles. All of that raised our expectations to a level I was not sure could ever be met. After traveling, I am normally quick to post a review. I love reading reviews and Trip Advisor is one of my “go to” tools for any vacation planning. This trip is different, every time I have sat down to review our experience, I have been unsure how to put in words how incredible Nimmo Bay is. The journey to get to Nimmo Bay sets the stage for how special the stay will be. Meeting our float plane at Port Hardy and meeting the Nimmo Bay representative at the Airport to the short flight in the WW2 Goose Float Plane is an amazing experience on its own. Landing (be prepared for a tilted plane 😊) then gliding to the Nimmo Bay dock to be welcomed by the staff is like something out of a movie. The welcome drink, warm towels and tour of the resort is just one more way that Nimmo Bay thinks of every minor detail and ensures visitors are taken care of. Walking to our cabin and first hearing, then seeing the incredible waterfall is something I will not forget. The cabins are incredible, we were happy to have our water view cabin with incredible views, comfortable beds (love 2 rooms!!), stocked with cookies, coffee, tea and libations and the added touch of a birthday card and bottle of bubbles on ice greeted us. What makes Nimmo Bay more than just an amazing place is its staff. I don’t know that I have visited anywhere where people loved their jobs more. The love they have for the Great Bear Rainforest, Nimmo Bay and even their employers who own Nimmo Bay is demonstrated in everything they do. The staff take pleasure in creating surprise experiences for their guests that make an already great experience something exceptional. The food and drink is some of the best I have had, the wellness treatments rival any spa I have been to. The setting of the resort nestled in the rainforest is phenomenal. Being a small resort, they set out and create this environment that builds a community among the guests. From cocktail hour around the firepit to the cozy dining room we found ourselves sharing the experience with other travelers. Meeting guest who like us were there for the first time and others who have been repeat visitors. One highlight of the trip was our extra-long Wildlife Safari with Mackenzie, he went out of his way to find us a myriad of wildlife to see and even located Orcas for us to see. He shared stories of how the First Nations used and navigated the land, told us about the wildlife we saw and shared his love of nature and the ocean. While my sister decided to take on some hikes with amazing guides, some of my favourite moments was simply being at the resort, enjoying a cup of coffee and book while being in this incredible place or enjoying the hot tubs, outdoor shower (amazing!) and waterfall. A tip, Nimmo Bay only allows a soft bag (duffle) and limits weight for each guest due to float plane limitations, but they have a lot of gear that they will supply. We were unsure if we would like everything they use, we were wrong, everything they have is excellent don’t be afraid to leave your raingear, hiking boots and other items at home! I am hesitant to name anyone because I don't want to leave anyone out but thanks to the wonderful staff who made the trip so special, thank you to Emily, Mackenzie ,Justin, Chris , Leah, Meg and Oxana and everyone I have not named. I am not sure this even comes close to how astonishing Nimmo Bay is. If you have the chance to visit this place, you will not regret it. I don't know when, but I know I will return.

I don't know what else I can say about this place. I've run out of things to say. There is even a wood plaque with this review laser burned into the wood in the gift shop. I give up, just go! Life is short, make your list of Experiences long. I've said this before and I still can't say it any better. When I travel to Nimmo Bay next year, it will be my 26th consecutive year of visiting. Over those years I’ve purchased over 200+ 3- and 4-day trips for myself and my friends. I know Nimmo Bay pretty well. I’ve read all the reviews. People are amazed at the glaciers, wildlife and waterfalls. Me too. But I’m even more amazed at Craig and Deb Murray who scratched and carved this experience out of the wilderness for us all. We will never know all the hardship, difficulties and challenges the Murray family faced. People love the whale watching and sea lions. Me too, but I’m more impressed with how Fraser and Becky have transformed Nimmo Bay into what it is today. Visitors write about watching mamma bear and cub, eagles flying almost at your fingertips, pristine rivers filled with salmon, bathing in a waterfall, lunch on top of a solitary mountain via a helicopter and 20,000-year-old glacier ice for our cocktails. I see a staff of young dedicated and talented people who never blink at any request. They warm a blanket by the fire before covering you up with it. Your wine glass never gets empty. These people are extraordinary. I see people behind the scene who make sure that I have electricity and hot water in the middle of a wilderness. How does that happen? Who are these magic people? I see extraordinarily talented Heli pilots flying between mountain tops. Pilots who guide and patiently teach me how to fish. Tie my hook. Release my fish. Become real friends. I see people who have faced challenge and adversity and persevered. Go to Nimmo Bay. Go often. Be amazed. I have been going on for 22 years. Sign me up for another week for the rest of my life.

Nimmo Bay. Nimmo Bay.

Magical. Simply magical. It's taken me almost a year to write this review as I find myself overwhelmed with nostalgia every time I think about the time my husband and I spent at this insanely beautiful and truly magical place. I found Nimmo Bay through an outdoor goods catalog a solid 8 + years ago. I cut out the photos and saved them knowing I would find myself there one day. In fact, they were the only photos on my vision board:) Fast forward: post covid, 2 babies, 2 40th birthdays. Seemed like the right time to go. The journey to Nimmo Bay is no small feat, but as you arrive in ON A SEA PLANE, the prior travels are forgotten and the experience begins. While Nimmo Bay is indeed a luxury experience, the luxury lies in the beauty of the surroundings, the simplicity of quality and intention, the genuine kindness of staff and their care and attention to every. single. detail. And of course the food (and drinks). Which are beyond blissful and made with true craftsmanship. As a guest, your days are curated just for you by a team of magical logistical fairies/ninjas. My husband is a man who needs or wants no frills. Just beer and nature. And all he wanted to do was hike up the highest mountain he could see. While bushwhacking up a mountain with no trails wasn't quite possible that day, they were able to give us a hearty and athletic hike that totally satiated the desire to reach a peak...and packed us a cold beer for the summit. The magnitude of beauty you experience while at Nimmo Bay is beyond words. The trees. So many trees. The unspoiled nature. The crisp air. The water. They all envelop you as you sit in this remote bay and feel like you, and the lovely people there, are the only people left on earth. Did I mention it was magical?

Memorable trip

My husband and I visited Nimmo Bay for our babymoon and it’s a trip that we will always remember. Everything about Nimmo Bay is magical and truly one of a kind. My husband and I frequent Africa for safaris and this experience in many ways reminded us of the magic you get on a safari- wildlife, untouched nature, remoteness and special touches and surprises from the staff throughout your stay. We really enjoyed our helicopter day. Our pilot Yves was highly skilled and showed us so much of the backcountry in one day- from fly fishing in rivers swarming with huge coho salmon in the morning to lunch on top of a scenic lake to hiking on top of glaciers to end the day. My one call out is that it would have been nice if the lodge would have scheduled the seaplane to Port Hardy to depart a bit later from the lodge on departing day as we had a 3 hour wait for our connecting plane and further delays had us sitting in a small airport for over 5 hours. Nevertheless, 5 stars all around and we’ll definitely be back with friends and family.

Heaven

I'm not a religious person, but if there is a heaven, it's Nimmo Bay. We've been very fortunate to have traveled a fair bit in our life but we've never been to a place as wonderful as Nimmo Bay. My wife and I came here to celebrate our belated 25th wedding anniversary and it was perfect. I had very high expectations for this trip and Nimmo Bay easily exceeded them. The setting and facilities at Nimmo Bay are incredible. The food and beverages (I loved the cocktails!) were Michelin star wonderful. Accommodations were off the charts great. We thoroughly loved all the activities at Nimmo Bay. And if all that wasn't enough, what makes Nimmo Bay an unbeatable traveling experience was the staff. I cannot do justice in words to express how incredible the staff are. They do everything possible to create the most wonderful holiday you can ever imagine. They make everything at Nimmo Bay unbelievably perfect. From the food, drinks, accommodation, activities, and the surprises, they are what makes the Nimmo Bay experience without comparison. I will not give away the surprises that the staff arranged for us but they really blew our minds. If there is a God, she will let us return to Nimmo Bay some day.
