Interview with Cap Maison Director/Co-Owner Adam Gobat
A) The ocean and sunset views are breathtaking – I have literally seen guests stopped in their tracks on arrival! Being on a cliff-top above the beach and ocean affords a spectacular view. Beyond that, we are a small independently owned hotel so we offer a more personalized service and attention to detail than you would get at a larger property yet the luxury is all still there – from the lavish suites (some with pools on the roof) to the luxury bed and bathroom amenities. Our heart and soul is very much in our food and drinks however and our award winning cliff-top restaurant the “Cliff at Cap” is now renowned as the best on the island with the most complete wine list.
Q) Can you explain what makes St. Lucia appealing to travelers as a vacation destination?
A) It is simply beautiful with a bit of everything which is unusual among Caribbean islands. It has beaches, mountains, rain forests and perhaps most importantly of all, very friendly people. Being varied, there is more to do than just flop on the beach (though never a bad option!). Our dining scene has really picked up over the last 10 years also.
Q) Are there any “must-try” dishes or drinks at the property that guests should order?
A) The local breakfast of Green Fig and Saltfish is an experience though perhaps an acquired taste. The braised Kobe short rib of beef cuts like butter and the Saturday night Caribbean Tapas are not to be missed! In general the Mahi Mahi fish is superb – deep, white and soft as good fish should be - and the local lobster is regionally renowned.
Q) What are the three things about your property that guests may not know?
A) 1 - We have just opened a second beachside restaurant called the “Naked Fisherman”.
2 - The owners have created unique personalized excursions and experiences of the island that they themselves enjoy doing (full-day island adventure tour including bird watching and eating like a local, Atlantic Coast remote hike/trail run.
3 - We have just the prestigious Wine Spectator award for our wine list – all kept in our walk in wine cellar (available to guests).
Q) Can you take me through what a guests stay would be like and what an average day might entail in terms of activities, etc?
A) Guests usually don’t start breakfast too early – say about 9:30am – but are always mesmerized by the early morning view from the Cliff at Cap and the sea birds (Pelicans, Ospreys, Cormorants, Boobies) swooping for their catch. A quick change and down to the beach for a few hours swimming or snorkeling on the house reef or attempting a sail/windsurf. Or even a trip out to see the beauty of St. Lucia on the hotel’s own luxury motor yacht. Then a light seafood lunch at the Naked Fisherman with maybe a cold glass of wine preceding a late afternoon snooze or reading a book on your private balcony. Contemplation of the daily changing fresh dinner menu commences over a sunset cocktail on Rock Maison – our spectacular drinks deck out to sea above the waves. Then into dinner and fine wine and maybe some live music before slipping into the oversized king beds with Egyptian cotton sheets.
Q) Have you had any notable guests or celebrities visit that you can share?
A) Mick Jagger, Daley Thompson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Isla Fisher and Chris O’Dowd.
Q) What elements about your property are truly luxurious?
A) The size of the Villa Suites, the attention to detail generally as well as an “off menu” personalized service aimed at trying to give the guest whatever they want.
Q) What advice do you have for guests who are staying at your hotel?
Q) What is the best time to travel to Cap Maison?
A) The Caribbean used to be divided neatly by wet and hurricane seasons but world weather has changed so much that there is no longer a really bad to come. That said, the breezes between early December and May cool things down nicely.
We celebrated my 50th birthday there, and absolutely loved the resort. our suite was amazing, and the amenities were lovely. It was all I could've hoped for for the celebration of this big birthday!
