My wife and I had stayed at the Mt. Nelson 42 years ago. For the last dinner on our current Cape Town visit, with our son, my wife suggested dinner at the Mt. Nelson. We booked an early seating in the Veranda, the more relaxed of the two hotel restaurants. Right after being seated, we were greeted by the manager, Emanuel. He set the stage for an enjoyable evening by sharing bits of history and guiding our choices of food from the menu and beyond. Then Thule took over and became the icing on the cake. She was so thoughtful and attentive. One example of her care is worth highlighting. After several courses, we were all too full to add dessert, but when Thuli confirmed that they could make a coffee milkshake, both our son and I ordered one. Truly took the initiative to bring one milkshake, split into two glasses. Both our son and I were grateful for the smaller than usual helping size. I asked Thuli if she had made the decision to split one helping, and she confirmed by explaining that since we were to full to have dessert, it would be appropriate to serve small helpings. Outstanding service tasty food, and a caring waitress all added up to an outstanding evening.

The high tea at the Mount Nelson was very nice. The tea room overlooking the garden was perfect on our rainy day. The petit fours and pastries were delicious and they have to-go boxes for extras you cannot finish. Zodwa, our server, was excellent. Watch your tea steeping time. If the staff do not catch it soon enough, it may oversteep.
