Paradise for a young family that appreciates the Outdoors
Carmel Valley Ranch is truly a slice of paradise. The rooms are immaculate and the kids activities and facilities are second to none including. Smores Petting animals at the Corral Driving Range Pickle Ball Kids Pool

Disappointing, over crowded and a bit rundown
The hotel was overbooked and also a bit rundown, which was disappointing. We were not provided the room with a forest view that we were booked. Instead we were "upgraded" to a suite -- I really dislike this disingenuous practice from hotels that provide you a room thats in an undesirable location looking at a parking lot and call it an upgrade. When I asked if we could be switched to the room type we had booked I was told the hotel was oversold and there weren't any other options including paying for a higher tier room or switching rooms part way through our stay. It's more that this bait and switch was not addressed that was very disappointing. I can understand the hotel is busy, but it would have been better if the staff had offered some other perk to offset the room issue. The room was very dark and some of the furniture and amenities were dated. I also wished the activities schedule included more options that were in the morning so that you could enjoy them before heading out for the day -- the majority of the activities are right in the middle of the day between 11am-3pm. Be aware that also the shuttle can take some time and places like the family pool could be over a mile away from your room.

Central California Retreat for Families and Couples
One of the best kept secrets, Carmel Valley Ranch is a gem for families and couples looking for a retreat. The staff at CVR are the heart of this property that keep us coming back year after year. There are lots of activities from hiking to pickleball or you can just do nothing and enjoy the crisp, coastal air and smell of lavender that grows around the property. The new executive chef and pastry chef at Valley Kitchen are a great addition, and the food is better than we've had in recent years. 20 minutes from Carmel-by-the-sea is an easy drive for breakfast and stroll, or check out Point Lobos reserve for amazing views of the Pacific. Early mornings and evening can get chilly so bring layers.
