Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

We moved to this hotel after walking around and seeing other options. We actually cancelled one night at Hyatt Place to stay here and it was a mistake. The employees are fine and seemed well trained. There apparently was no room upgrade at check-in even though we booked through a site that offered an upgrade at check-in. OK, its possible it wasn't available but the hotel wasn't that busy. The spa and fitness area need serious work. The layout is atrocious. The fitness equipment is old and rusted. The TV channels on the cable are about 10 with half being DISH advertisements. The trash and dirty towel bins were overflowing. Someone came in to empty the towel bin and left the overflowing trash. Now, I don't really care about most of these things but, combined, it was symptomatic of a more serious lack of attention to detail that should come with a 4 or 5 star hotel. The dinner at the sports bar was marginal and seemed to be populated with locals who are looking for heir own reality show. I should have tried the main restaurant Now, the lobby bar was awesome with a great piano player and good, reasonably priced drinks. And the servers were very attentive. The "coups de gras" for me was the HVAC system. We couldn't cool the room and we asked the front desk for assistance. Of course we got the "we will send engineering up" routine and nothing changed. Fortunately it was late March and not mid-August. Seriously, if your HVAC has issues just tell people. The hotel knows what's going on; totally deceptive. And finally, there are dogs everywhere. I would not stay here again especially for the price they command. The employees did a good job but I think the management is negligent.

After a much needed renovation the CP is back and better than ever! Over the past five years we had switched to the French Quarter Inn for our weekends getaways in Charleston. We decided to give the CP another try and we are hooked! Excellent decor, service and the bedding was to die for! All staff were top notch and very attentive. Club level - 8th floor - was well worth the extra price and the all-day snacks and beverages were excellent. We didn't want to leave and will be back very soon!

This is a great hotel. Recently remodeled. Excellent decor. Super convenient to city's attractions. Wonderful place to stay. Easy parking too. Spa with indoor pool is definitely a plus. Would definitely stay here again.

This is an Amazing hotel. The amenities and service are amazing. Also so many restaurants to choose from. We stayed on the 8th floor and OMG wine and appetizers free every afternoon. The best lobster Mac and cheese if I must say. Definitely a 5 star hotel. The bellmen and valet people we exceptional. They truly made me feel special. Shhh which I'm not. But for my short stay here I felt like a Queen. Thank you to the entire staff. This is the only place in Charleston I will ever stay.

We spent 4 days in the Belmond and it was very difficult to leave. We loved everything about the hotel. It has been recently restored, so the room was state of the art, with light controls for the whole room right next to the bed (a real treat). We stayed on the Club Level, and there were drinks and excellent snacks available all day and into the night for rooms on the 7th and 8th floors. And everyone we encountered was friendly and anxious to help. One of my best hotel experiences. And the location was perfect; right in the heart of the historic district. We will definitely come back.
