Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

We stayed at the Belmond for 3 nights to celebrate our anniversary. The southern hospitality here was at its finest. The hotel/room was absolutely gorgeous. The staff members were top notch and made you feel appreciated. Our favorite parts were the pool area, the Palmetto cafe, and the room being so beautiful and peaceful. The king sized bed and the tranquility of the room made this such a good night's sleep. I am a fairly light sleeper and always travel with my noise machine to drown out noises from the hallway or neighbors. I didn't even have to use it once. Michael and Christina at the pool bar were amazing and very memorable. Michael makes THE BEST Strawberry Margaritas. Will be back for sure.

My husband and I recently spent a few days at the Belmond Charleston Place and we can't wait to go back! The staff members were friendly and accommodating (e.g., early check-in, down-free room) and the hotel was very clean. Our room was well appointed and we loved the thoughtful details (e.g., light switches for every light near the bed's headboard). Room service was excellent and the pool was an oasis after a hot day playing tourist. A beautiful and classic property in the heart of the historic district.

We booked a large suite with an adjoining room for a girls weekend this week and when we arrived today (at almost 6 pm) one of the two rooms was unavailable for check in because housekeeping was still working on it (at 6pm!). This isn't a huge deal but the front desk associate was very dismissive about it ("the other room isnt ready we will call you to come down and get the keys when it is" (a small apology would have been wonderful) I asked when it would be and she said "I'm not sure" (no attempt to make contact with housekeeping to find out the status)). The valet that was helping us unload asked me to walk over there and "sign something" I walked slightly pass the valet desk to set down my items out of the way of other people because the luggage cart was full and I heard him mumble "okay or not, just do what you want." Neither of our rooms have coffee makers in them and neither rooms had bathtubs. The hotel itself is beautiful and the rooms are in great shape. The location is excellent too but the service from the staff is lack-luster, especially for the price of the accommodations.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel in Oct of 2016 for my wifes 40th bday. We had a regular room with no real view, but then again, we didn't care because we were there to see Charleston on the ground, not look out a window. The check in process was pretty smooth and the room was in really good shape. My wife likes clean rooms so this was definitely a plus. The bathroom was probably my only complaint and only because the way the shower was set up, you had to open a glass door to get in the shower, and then step high up and in to get in. My wife is a bit fragile and with a slippery floor I worried she might fall. We didn't eat in the place so nothing to review there. I really liked the pool area, even though there was active construction going on while we were there. They had a nice bar area set up so I could get a few beers while looking at the city. We liked I so much then that we are booked to go back next week for my 40th bday. This place is classy, clean, and worth a little more money. You can walk to everything. Note: It says Oct of 2017 but it was actually 2016 as the choices were limited, and I put this review in a bit late.

My husband & I stayed at this hotel in early May. I had made the reservation back in early January booking a premier deluxe room with a balcony. In the hotel description it says that this type of room would have a lovely view of the city........NOT TRUE. We checked in and were given a room with a balcony that overlooked a parking garage.......great city view. And to make matters worse, every night around 10:00 all you can hear outside is the banging of trash carts as they are brought outside by the restaurants and dragged down the stairs. Great wake-up call after a long day of sightseeing. Also did not know that the hotel was pet friendly.
