Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

Beautiful hotel in Charleston in a great location right by downtown and the waterfront. Welcome and friendly staff, beautiful clean rooms, great pool and nice bars both on the rooftop and near the lobby. Will definitely be coming back!

The Staff has excellent Customer service, very attentive and flexible. Always willing to work with us and make changes when we needed! The check in and out process was seamless! The Location of the hotel is right in the middle of the downtown Charleston which made shopping and site sighting walkable. Our experience was Fantastic!

Can not say enough wonderful things about the Belmond Charleston Place. From the moment you walk in the staff are welcoming and friendly. The hotel itself is beautiful with elegant decor both in the rooms and public spaces. The location was excellent right in the heart of Charleston, a short walk out either entrance puts you next to several bars, restaurants, and historic sights. Above all we were thankful for Abi in the sales office. We were forced to move our outdoor wedding inside due to bad weather. She made it easy and hassle free to find a space inside the hotel that was amazing. In the end we were so happy with the space that we were glad to rain forced the change of plans. We will absolutely be coming back to the Belmond Charleston Place at least once a year for the foreseeable future.

We stayed for 3 nights mid week into the weekend. While it is clearly one of the more pricey options in town, to is the cost is worth it. Location is prime. Centrally located to most attractions and restaurants. We stayed on the Club Level. Unlimited drinks from dawn to dusk if one desires, with food options available throughout the day (almost most varied options are at breakfast and early evening). Staff could not be more accommodating and friendlier. Room was nice and comfortable. Turn down person every night was a sweet heart. Only negative was we were on the Odd side of the hall and had no view. Even side looked like a great view. Pool area is small but clean. We dined at Charleston Grille and a had an exceptional meal. Overall a great experience and we will stay there again on our next visit.

This is the fourth Belmond property my wife and I have stayed in and was by far our least favorite. Having stayed at the El Encanto in Santa Barbara, the Hotel Carusso in Ravello and the Hotel San Michelle in Fiesole (both of these properties being in Italy) our expectations were high. We were very let down. The rooms and bath were small (although well appointed) and you could hear everything happening in the halls even inside the rooms. The property is rather large and is separated into two buildings. We were on the third floor because we wanted a room with floor to ceiling glass and we had a small balcony which was nice because of the extra light in the room. It was warmer than usual when we were there and the air conditioning struggled to keep up. The hot water went out one afternoon and when I called to let them know, Amber (who is miscast as a person answering customer calls!) first told me she would report it and someone would come to our room. I said that is odd but she insisted that was the protocol. 30 minutes later when I called back she said that "engineering" was aware of it and they were taking care of it. No "sorry Mr. Petrick or I understand you and your wife would like to be able to take a shower" or anything like that. Just we are working on it and everyone is experiencing the outage. That is what I meant when I said she was miscast in her role answering client requests. One of the strengths of Belmond properties has always been their food and at best the Palmetto cafe (which is a beautiful space by the way) was a mediocre but high priced breakfast and lunch spot. In fact, it was so mediocre, that we never went back even though it was right downstaits. We did have cocktails and the Thoroughbred Lounge a couple times and really enjoyed it. This hotel is in a GREAT location however and that alone is worth the 3 star rating i give it.
