Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

We had wanted to visit Charleston for sometime and having decided on a date we were unexpectedly pleased to find a Belmond Hotel in Charleston Our previous experience of Belmond (formerly Orient Express group) has always been the highest quality and this hotel maintained their high standards It not the same as The Caruso Ravello or Cipriano Venice as this is South Georgia and not Italy. Rooms are very spacious service excellent, cuisine first class, especially the grill. The hotel is quite large so there may be the odd convention when you are there however, due to the space this will not inconvenience you. The hotel is well positioned in town with a substantial shopping arcade. Concierge very helpful and there is an airport shuttle. Having looked around the city there is no other hotel which we would have chosen Definitely THE hotel in Charleston. Lovely swimming pool and spa. We booked through American Express and had an upgrade to a suite and other advantages. Dinner in the grill for two with glasses of wine $150 without service

Have just had 2 excellent nights at this pricey but excellent hotel. The decor in the rooms and hotel is lovely relaxing colours and the furnishings plush and spacious. Our room had big walk in shower, fridge and every evening the turn down service delivered water. We used the bar one evening and again prices steep but lovely cocktails and plentiful nibbles supplied. The concierge is very helpful and booked our carriage ride which picked us up from the door. The location is good for walking to the sea front, bars and restaurants. To improve it further I would suggest a coffee maker in the room and the windows outside to have a clean. I am rating excellent despite this as the hotel supplied complimentary champagne and chocolates to my brother and sister in law for their anniversary which was a lovely generous touch. The pool is really lovely with a sun terrace and was a good size for a proper swim.

This place deserves more than 5 stars. Even though it was the most expensive place I have ever stayed, it had everything you need to enjoy your stay. Spa, pool, roof top deck, restaurants, and the list goes on. Very hospitable staff that is available for all your needs and request during your stay. Close to all the main downtown attractions and the historic district. Great location for walking to and from most destinations. I hope we get a chance to stay here again.

Staff is very friendly and helpful. We had a minor mechanical issue and Hayley at Front Desk took extra time and care to resolve. Housekeeping keeps guest rooms immaculate. Highly recommend for guests who want a larger luxury hotel with pool, spa and health club.
