Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

Stayed in late March under the AMEX Platinum program. I give this hotel top ratings. It is centrally located in Charleston, well appointed, very clean and well maintained. Was able to check in at 11am and received an upgrade thru AMEX. The rooms are nicely decorated and very comfortable and quiet. The room and bathroom were spotless. Service was outstanding in terms of house keeping and concierges. They provide daily turndown service and provided plenty of towels. The pool facility and outdoor deck is very nice although the Jacuzzi was not operating properly during stay. We had an extremely positive experience at the Charleston Grill which is located within the hotel facility. Justin the bartender treated us very well. We also had dinner there and the food and service was first rate. The restaurant manager Mickey really knows his business. Very good live entertainment as well. On the negative side, the Palmetto Café located within the hotel and where breakfast is served was very disappointing. There were waits to be seated. We learned to make reservations in advance. Service was very slow and inconsistent. One morning waited over thirty minutes for simple bacon and eggs. Servers tend to disappear. If not for the AMEX breakfast credit, we would have given up on the Palmetto after the first visit. I would not let this negate my overall recommendation to stay at the Belmond.

Every wedding anniversary is a special occasion that deserves a celebration but when we reached our 50th [this past weekend] our son, daughter and my twin sister pulled out all the stops, we languished in splendor and hospitality that is second to none. The club floor and restaurant staff surpassed themselves ensuring we had everything we needed. The beautifully refurbished room rated high on our list. Our family who treated us to all this are beyond belief.

My husband and I love this hotel. The location is fabulous, right in the center of the historic district. It is also the only hotel I know of that has a pool and spa on site in the downtown area. The rooms were recently updated, so they look and feel fabulous. Service is always good, but I could do without the early morning knock (8am) from housekeeping. Always put your "do not disturb" sign on the door, or you will get the knock.

We moved to this hotel after walking around and seeing other options. We actually cancelled one night at Hyatt Place to stay here and it was a mistake. The employees are fine and seemed well trained. There apparently was no room upgrade at check-in even though we booked through a site that offered an upgrade at check-in. OK, its possible it wasn't available but the hotel wasn't that busy. The spa and fitness area need serious work. The layout is atrocious. The fitness equipment is old and rusted. The TV channels on the cable are about 10 with half being DISH advertisements. The trash and dirty towel bins were overflowing. Someone came in to empty the towel bin and left the overflowing trash. Now, I don't really care about most of these things but, combined, it was symptomatic of a more serious lack of attention to detail that should come with a 4 or 5 star hotel. The dinner at the sports bar was marginal and seemed to be populated with locals who are looking for heir own reality show. I should have tried the main restaurant Now, the lobby bar was awesome with a great piano player and good, reasonably priced drinks. And the servers were very attentive. The "coups de gras" for me was the HVAC system. We couldn't cool the room and we asked the front desk for assistance. Of course we got the "we will send engineering up" routine and nothing changed. Fortunately it was late March and not mid-August. Seriously, if your HVAC has issues just tell people. The hotel knows what's going on; totally deceptive. And finally, there are dogs everywhere. I would not stay here again especially for the price they command. The employees did a good job but I think the management is negligent.

After a much needed renovation the CP is back and better than ever! Over the past five years we had switched to the French Quarter Inn for our weekends getaways in Charleston. We decided to give the CP another try and we are hooked! Excellent decor, service and the bedding was to die for! All staff were top notch and very attentive. Club level - 8th floor - was well worth the extra price and the all-day snacks and beverages were excellent. We didn't want to leave and will be back very soon!
