Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

This is a wonderful hotel in the heart of the Historic District overlooking the Market area. The ground level has shops as well as dining and drinks. The lobby is beautiful with staircases winding around a large chandelier in the middle. There are numerous events in this hotel. This was Southeastern Wildlife weekend so the place was very busy. The staff were always helpful and the place is the epitome of luxury. There was an art and sculpture exhibit on the second floor. We had a wonderful weekend.

Went here for a R&R weekend and loved the room, the room service and the pool and spa. Housekeeping, however, could not get it straight. They seemed to show up at odd hours and, sadly, I was deprived of a privacy sign--so it wasn't as restful as I had hoped. That being said, Charleston was lovely and the hotel is centrally located. I needed the pool and the spa and was not disappointed in those things.

We always stay at Charleston Place when we visit and love everything about this hotel, however, the one complaint we have is the quality of the cribs for infants. Instead of a typical crib with a mattress, each guest is given a blue pack and play with a rock solid mattress.

First of all I will admit we did not know this place is dog friendly. Some people are allergic to dogs and we are. This should be on the website and letting you know this before you book. Our room had some dog hairs in it , the furniture needs replacing. We made several attempts to check in. Second time I was told our room was ready, then the hotel clerk comes back and told me it was not ready due to guest having a late check out. I notice on the 6th floor that a lot of rooms had failed to be clean, they had the doors open on a majority of the rooms, the carpet in the hallway was very filthy, I mean truly filthy. After we seen dogs in Thoroughbred , we quit going there. We also were told that we would get a $50 certificate, guess I dream that, but it was in writing. So beware if animals bother you probably not the place to stay, Truly an overpriced hotel, will not return
