Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

We were at a conference so did not take advantage of the in house dining but the food served during our event was outstanding and all the staff made you feel at home with their friendly smiles and helpful demeanor.

Charleston Place is a first-class, five-star experience in the heart of Charleston. Our guest room was newly-renovated with a luxurious bathroom. Stayed three nights for a conference, the hotel's facilities and staff are top-notch. Great location for exploring all of the historic architecture and fine dining of Charleston. Highly recommended.

Our stay was disappointing, particularly considering the price. Our room and bathroom were nicely appointed and elegant looking, but the window in our room was cloudy and needs to be replaced. The thermostat also did not seem to be working. We could turn it to 65 or lower, but we could not get the room to cool below 73 degrees, particularly after showers. For some reason, warm water was coming out of the cold faucet at night. There is no coffee maker in the room so you are forced to either order room service or make a Starbucks run. On the second night of our stay, we returned to the room around 5:30 p.m. ready to shower and relax (after setting out around 9:30 a.m.), but our room had not been cleaned. We also missed out on turn down service the second night when we returned to the room about 9:00 p.m. On the morning of checkout, we called the for bell service and waited and waited. Finally when no one arrived, we schlepped our bags to the lobby ourselves. With a two night stay exceeding $1000, we did not find the room condition and service to be consistent with the price of the stay.

Staff was great. Food was excellent in the club level. Made you feel very welcome. Breakfast was terrific. It was easy to get to all the sights in town. I was very pleased with all aspects of my stay and I'm usually very picky

We stayed at the Belmond for 4 nights in August. Beautiful hotel. Impeccable service from the valet, the concierge, front desk and especially house keeping. We stayed on the concierge floor well worth the price. Endless display of food and drinks morning till night. Rooms were keep spotless and wonderful turn down service at night (turning down the beds, turning on lights, leaving slippers by the bed and leaving bottle water). Location to us was the best. One entrance takes you to King Street, another entrance takes you to Meeting Street and another entrance takes you to the Market. Could walk everywhere from the hotel. Very enjoyable stay! Next time we come back we will stay here again.
