Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

My wife and I and another couple had chosen this hotel in Charleston, South Carolina because it was one of the hotels in the central part of the historic district. What a great choice we made! The hotel is an excellent place to stay. The lobby is super and leads to a number of upscale stores in which to shop. There are entrances to the hotel from different streets and it is easy to get to. Valet parking (and self-parking) is available and our car was unloaded in a secure area out of the oncoming rain with no problem. The staff is exemplary. From the luggage valet, to the check-in staff and especially to the concierges. There were 2 gentleman with whom we dealt frequently. I apologize for forgetting the other gentleman's name, even though he was just great, but the other concierge, named Robert, was exceedingly pleasant, informative, courteous, patient, friendly, and greatly personable. Really, he set a very high bar for concierge staffs in the future. The rooms were spotless and attractive even upon first entering. Both rooms had a Juliet balcony which opened overlooking some streets with a beautiful view. The shower in the bathroom was wonderful!! It had both a hand sprayer AND an overhead rain shower. It was delicious. We wouldn't have minded staying in the shower longer, but we felt that we were there to tour. I should add there is a physical fitness room and a pool, but we did not avail ourselves of either of those amenities. Let me mention that the towels in the bathrooms were thick and full and really wonderful to use. Many times hotel towels are thin and hardly absorbent, but the towels here were super! The bed was thick and firm and just great for sleeping comfortably. I would have liked somewhat thicker pillows myswelf, but I guess I could have asked for a third pillow to thicken my side for sleeping. Television (a very large screen) and wi-fi were both provided and the amenities in the bathroom, conditioner, shampoo, body wash etc. were of a very high quality. The morning cleaning staff and the afternoon turn-down staff were both extremely pleasant and never bothersome if we had our "Do Not Disturb" sign hanging outside. Even the Do Not Disturb sign is a high quality and unusual one--a small hanging bag with a stone inside. Adorable! There are a number of restaurants within the hotel itself, one of them being the Charleston Grill, a somewhat expensive, but very high-quality restaurant. Top of the line wait service and delicious food. This hotel was among the nicest we have stayed in. None of us has any hesitation whatsoever in recommending the Belmond Charleston Place Hotel to anyone traveling to this very interesting and charming city.

The location if this hotel is perfect. Easy to walk to a lot of restaurants and all the shops on King Street. Every one very nice and polite throughout hotel. Room was clean and spacious. Nice indoor pool with outdoor lounging areas. Would definitely stay here again in the future.

Outstanding service from our concierge Rick as well as a beautiful suite made our stay just perfect. Our room was lush and inviting, everything was clean and fresh. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. It's on the corner from the city market and right in the heart of the restaurant and shops.

Great location. Very well maintained. Extremely friendly and well trained staff. Rooms were very nice. They have a restaurant that is terrific too. Even the lunch/breakfast staff were exceptionally well trained - even remembering our names when they served us. The central location allowed us to walk everywhere and that was fun.

Really enjoyed our stay at the Belmond. Great location in the middle of everything. Service was excellent, from the valets to the front desk and the Thoroughbred Club staff. Room was very well appointed, very clean and truly relaxing. Only complaint was the rattly A/C in our room, but nothing we couldn't live with. I would highly recommend a stay here.
