Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

I attended a work event at the Charleston Place a couple weeks ago. Sometimes, historic hotels/inns rest on their laurels and let things get a little rough around the edges. Not so with the Belmond Charleston Place. It was impeccably maintained inside and had plenty of special touches that made it feel on peer with resorts in a higher price tier. The rooms were furnished beautifully and the bathrooms were spacious and lovely. After long days of meetings, I ended up eating at the lobby lounge for two nights and found it to be just what I needed. Good food, nice wine, prompt/attentive service (a rare treat!), and a decent pianist to add ambiance. I would absolutely come back for business or pleasure in the future!

Our management group had a wonderful time at the Belmond in Charleston for their recent meeting. It was so nice to have the Belmond take care of all of our meetings, meals and events and outings. The group had so many good things to say about the atmosphere and the hospitality from everyone at the Belmond. It was a great retreat and meeting time for our group made even more special by all the little details that made the trip memorable. It's nice to plan a trip and know that you don't have to worry about anything. The Belmond is the place to be in Charleston for a great and relaxing time, very special and beautiful. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute and would love to plan a trip back there soon.

Splendid from arrival to departure. Definitely five star! We stayed in a club level room, and it was well worth the upgrade! We were made to feel welcome and special by the entire staff. Our couples massage was top notch, the Charleston Grill was awesome. Can't say enough about the top quality of the entire stay.

Charleston was the signature stop for our family summer drive-cation. In some cases, award winning classic hotels of this caliber can be snooty. Not this one. The Belmond was the absolutely perfect home for our four day stay. We found all of the staff including the cleaning crews walking the hallway, to be smiling, nice and helpful. The friendly doorman directed us to easy less-expensive self park option with great tips for dinning and tours. Trip was also our wedding anniversary and we recieved a beautiful personalized chocolate strawberry and champagne amenity. Our suite was spacious, clean, more modern than expected with a big bathroom and super comfortable memory foam sofa bed. A very liveable space. My Daughter and i enjoyed the pool, whirlpool and lounge chairs while my wife soaked up a spa day. Romantic Anniversary dinner for three at Charleston Grill could not have been set or scripted better. Food, ambiance and service were all 1st class and camera-ready. Bring extra $$$ for the fine shopping stores inside the hotel. Maybe my wife's favorite part. Walking distance to everything we did and needed. Definately our choice for friends and the future.

The Belmond was not rated at the top of “best places to stay” in Charleston and we were perplexed as to why other than it doesn’t have some unique or historical twist. The only drawback was the more public lobby that is right at the center of the shopping promenade. But, that is a personal preference for a less commercial lobby so didn’t take that into consideration in the review. We arrived very early (before 9am) and knew that check-in was not until late afternoon but we were never reminded of such. We were asked what floor we would prefer and that they would gladly store our luggage until our room was ready. They would call us when the room was ready - which did happen 2x. The first when a room on a lower floor was ready if we would prefer to check-in earlier and the 2nd time when a room on a higher floor was ready. In demand restaurant reservations are very difficult to get but the concierge got us a lunch reservation at a top restaurant. We didn’t hear back from him for dinner reservations but we were so full from lunch that we were actually thankful that we didn’t have a dinner reservation as we happily snacked in the lobby bar. The hallways and rooms are beautifully appointed with serene palate of soft and restful blues and grays. They are pristinely clean, quiet and highly conducive to resting and sleeping but the piece de resistance were the light panels by the side of the bed that were connected to all lights in the room, including the bathroom! No need to get out of bed to turn lights on or off. Heaven! Right next to the light panel was a charging panel and electric outlet with plenty of room on the bedside table for drinks, glasses and chargeable items. While the rooms aren’t oversized they are furnished and laid out so as to maximize space making them feel much larger and very comfortable. Lovely view of the Arthur Ravel bridge. The bed was extremely comfortable and just the right height for easy entry (see review for The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island) with the perfect number of layers without being overly cumbersome. The two sitting chairs looked uncomfortable yet were deceivingly the opposite - comfortable and cozy. A very large and handsome armoire with two side doors for hanging and drawers in the middle is strategically placed in the ample entryway which has a set back making it easy to use the armoire and pass through the entryway at the same time. The bathroom was complementary in white and gray marble with an extra deep soaking tub with rain shower, hand shower and L’Occitaine toiletries. Lots of countertop space and drawers. Towels were fluffy, fresh and sweet smelling. Service was exemplary from the bell stand, valet, reception, concierge services and housekeeping. Housekeeper saw me carrying ice back to the room and said I wasn’t allowed to do such as that is what they are there to do and then I was gently admonished for not wearing my slippers! We’d rank Belmond at the top of the list of 5 star places to stay in Charleston and would happily book a return stay!
