Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

This is a big, beautiful and expensive old hotel. The location is great with shopping in the hotel and right out the door. Much of Charleston's best dining options are within walking distance and the market is less then a block away. The rooms have been updated and are comfortable. With so many rooms the pool and outdoor deck areas were over crowded and we were never able to enjoy. No complimentary coffee or maker in the rooms so $10+ from room service or down to a coffee bar in the lobby. The hotel and everything in it is expensive and I just didn't feel we received good value for what we paid but the staff we interacted with were all excellent and it is a great location

The best feature is the very convenient, walkable location. The room was nice but I didn't feel as though it was very clean when we arrived. The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful. The elevators in the hotel were painfully slow.

My wife and I came to Charleston to celebrate our 40th anniversary and could not be any happier. Belmond is a BEAUTIFUL establishment, centrally located in downtown Charleston and is staffed by true professionals!!! We stayed on the Club level and were thoroughly looked after. IMHO, if you are coming to Charleston, this is the only place to stay!

We stayed for three nights on the club floor. The service was wonderful, the staff was very polite and helpful and had a comfortable quiet room. We had a delicious dinner at The Charleston Grill with great service. Charleston is a beautiful city and this hotel is in a prime location, walking distance to everything you'll want to see. Highly recommend!

First off, walking in from the airport was a treat, the staff is beyond welcoming and friendly. I believe Hayley checked me in and she was the nicest person and her warm personality was a great way to start off my vacation. She put me in a third floor balcony room and it took my breath away. The decor of the hotel room makes it unique to Charleston and removed the "chain" hotel feel. By the way, the room are enormous, I could have fit four more people if I wanted to. The balcony is small (called a Juliet balcony) but did the job, although it's not large enough to fit a chair. My room was right off the elevator so it was a little louder than maybe some others. If I stayed again, I would ask to make sure I didn't have the same location. Some reviews talked about the a/c. My a/c worked perfectly and kept the room super cool, just how I like it. Was it loud? Well, it more sounded like a bathroom fan that I got used to after 10 minutes and didn't bother me in any way during my stay. Want to relax? Their salt water pool is amazing and always open since it offers the retractable roof. The pool is huge, so at times there were maybe 20 - 30 people in there, but it never felt crowded. The deck, I wish they offered more chairs outside as I was never able to grab a seat. It seems to be a waste that the other half of the roof is unused. I'm sure there's a reason, but I would add more chairs in the existing area to make sure everyone has a seat. The lobby is grand, but not a true lobby. More than once I wished there were couches and/or more chairs so I could sit and people watch. But I found a way to do this anyways and take in all the luxury of the Belmond. Overall, with the minor things I mentioned, this is a great hotel and vacation get-away. Stop looking around and choose the Belmond. You won't be disappointed. One a side note, while they do offer taxi service, but use Uber or get your own cab, it's much cheaper if you are on a budget.
