Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

Great location. Very well maintained. Extremely friendly and well trained staff. Rooms were very nice. They have a restaurant that is terrific too. Even the lunch/breakfast staff were exceptionally well trained - even remembering our names when they served us. The central location allowed us to walk everywhere and that was fun.

Really enjoyed our stay at the Belmond. Great location in the middle of everything. Service was excellent, from the valets to the front desk and the Thoroughbred Club staff. Room was very well appointed, very clean and truly relaxing. Only complaint was the rattly A/C in our room, but nothing we couldn't live with. I would highly recommend a stay here.

We stayed at the hotel for Father's Day weekend. We've stayed their in the past but this was our first time since the expansive remodel. It looks fantastic. The rooms are updated but still maintain the great southern charm of Charleston. The food was amazing inside the restaurant and room service was delivered in a timely manner. The bar was good for people watching and our waitress Char was great. The pool is nice, covered indoor outdoor. Bartender was pleasant and helpful. Spa staff I felt was the weak spot. Some were downright rude! They would walk thru the relaxation area and not even speak. The front desk "girls" were condescending. I use the word "girls" because I am a grown woman. Spa services nothing special. I expected more in that area. Overall, we enjoyed the hotel and would stay again for sure. I would avoid the spa if you truly want a relaxing experience. Oh, relaxation room doesn't match the renovation. It's dated and is more of a pass thru not a room. Downtown is great.

Let me simply say: if you have the money, GO! My best friend was turning 60, her husband secretly arranged my husband and myself to be there in another suite of course, and surprised her when he took her down a different floor, so suspenseful & seconds later, we joined up to have the best time of our years together, in the center of Charleston, a walking city, and in-hotel divine highly rated restaurant where the food is anything but ordinary in all ways. My friend saw John McCaine on the Club floor, where she stayed, it's a slightly higher-rated floor, and I know that it is a very popular as a go-to spot for famous clientele, it is tucked away, quieter,w/ a more private spot for gathering w/ drinks and talk and with outstanding service. There is a fun bar atop the building, (this place is large!), for more average fare and prices, with seating at a bar w/ everything you need. There are a number of shops on the street level floor, which I almost did not notice until I read it and walked around the block. Very high-end boutique shopping there, as well as down the blocks heading toward the fashion, antiques, and dining districts.

The hotel was good but the massage given by Triston was the worst experience ever. I've had easily 40 massages but never have I been bruised by the unskilled hands of a masseuse! My Swedish massage turned into 80 minutes of pain. Avoid her at all costs.
