Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

Belmond Charleston Place Where Southern Charm meets timeless elegance... This is the kind of review that I’m joyfully writing... A Review about a great Hotel... A Review of a Hotel in the most friendly city in America... A Hotel visited as part of a longtime cherished Gastrotour... A Hotel that we loved... Before going on some details of our fantastic experience there, I'm obliged to note that being a Hotel Developer and Resort Owner in the Caribbean, being professional Architect specialized in Resorts and Hotels designs and being a "high end" traveler all my life...I do have a very clear understanding on hotel management and meanings of their many guests offerings and, even deeper, into its demanding -multifunctional- details design... That is why I can, professionally and as a traveler, asserts that the Belmond Hotel at Charleston Place has what a great hotel needs; certain charm and style in its attractive, but classic influenced design; a great mix in southern elegance and distinction, warmth and intimacy in its architecture, deco, design and layouts... which is not boxed just into classic standards, but offering a different theme in hospitality, from entranced areas to guest-rooms to its many facilities...making every single stay there... a unique experience ! Those are qualities (among non important-small glitches as in any Hotel) together with personalized-friendly attentions and Building maintenance that -I think- are of paramount importance for property to be qualified as a "Grand Hotel", but lets have a look at some of those qualities: > LOCATION. Its location, without any doubts, is the very best in Charleston; in the very heart of that historic, holy city, between and with entrances to and from Meeting and King, its most iconic main streets. To the had Market Place at easy, walking distance and a little bit farther...multiple city attractions. To the step out-directly- on non other than historic King Street and its many high end stores and boutiques. Besides that, an important layout detail design is; its main and independent cars and vehicular fantastic-rotonda form- entrance. That entrance has an easy and immediate connection to its own and large covered parking building. On those great areas, its Valet Parking services are, as friendly and unpretentious, as it can be. > EXTERIOR IMAGE. With its nice architectural design, facade detail and sculptures (from vehicular entrance)...the Hotel is an attraction, as a building, itself. Besides that, the majestical east entrance has the very the location on Meeting street > RECEPTION and Looby areas. They are simply a work of architectural art. Rather "chic" and perfectly designed with its very high ceiling, old style majestic stairs, topped by a grand Chandelier. This enchants with its Georgian open-arm staircase, Italian marble floors and that glistening chandelier. Its easy connection to all needed is evident; Front Desk, Concierge, elevators to Rooms and other facilities and its large, cozy and Fantastic Lobby Bar. Right there you will find its rather “informal”, but impressively nice; “Palmetto Cafe” with Its fantastic recipes and brilliant Courtyard setting (Reviewed separately) There we had and enjoyed all our style, as a truest Joie de Vivre ! A Shopping Arcade of the high end brands is part of those entranced areas. There you will find many treats and souvenirs for all family...or to have lunch or dinner at non other than the Charleston bests. > GUESTS FACILITIES. Those areas are perfect and offering everything needed and more to be qualified as a luxurious Five Star Hotel: The Belmond hosts one of the best fine restaurant in Southeastern areas: “Charleston Grill”...a Gastronomic Place, highly rated #3 in USA by TripAdvisor. A place that, as impenitent foodies, we enjoyed as part of a planned Gastrotour in the southeastern coastal areas of USA....and is thoroughly reviewed separately. All restaurants options at Belmond has a clever architectural design, as self standing ones, allowing independence between Hotel Guests and gastro-restaurant goers. The Belmond SPA, Pools and private Guest entertainment areas, located on floors above, offers an ultimate luxury experience from a variety of therapeutic treatments and attractive guests reserved areas...that can be enjoyed many times over the year. We considered this, as we enjoyed it a whole afternoon, one the greatest-distinctive attraction of the Belmond hotel....kind of “sanctuary of calm in the middle of downtown Charleston, guests are invited to leave every care at the door. Indulge in signature facials, scrubs and skin-soothing massages. There’s even a kids’ menu to make pampering a family affair”. I din’t understand why they don’t promote those areas, lets say; more actively among its guests ? Views from there, over Charleston’s skyline, King street and the whole city-at sunset time- are not to be missed while there as guests. > MEETING AREAS and Events. They had large and well located meeting and event areas, as we can noticed, with independent access and good as they can be. We didn’t used it, but as hotelier I did notice how great they are. > CONCIERGE service, perfectly located, was friendly, fantastic and helpful. We love to find that they keep staff with such a great work attitude > STAFF. In hotels, as in any other large Business of Services; service is of paramount importance, but that comes from a vertical command in which every and each part of that command chain knows it it was here at Belmond Charleston Place Kemmons Wilson (Holiday Inn founder) said; “Life is Service”. In HOTELS no other statement is truest than this one ! Last, but not least important: > ACCOMMODATIONS at Belmond are one of its strongholds; they are FANTASTIC. We loved our great latest assigned room as we requested to change our first one due to its Queen bed. When we asked for help, our request was promptly attended, thanks to Amber at from desk. She, Amber, merit special mention due to her profesional understanding to our problem and her friendly, lovely treatment to all of us. Our thanks to her for sending us a nice welcoming fruits and sparkling wine basket to our newer assigned room. Later on, thanks to that treatment, we moved (from other different hotel) our daughter and husband, on our additional nights staying in Charleston ! Rooms showed great layout and all its multiple details; distribution, ample siting areas, great king bed’s beddings and comfort, great deco, nice classic furniture and southern style ambiance. The bathroom has great amenities and bathtub with double showers, including a modernist rain shower (nice detail) Every and each one of those myriad of details at Belmond Charleston Place hotel could be overlooked by others, but not by us... discerning high end travelers and Hotel Owners ! ...and that's why we will keep this hotel in a soft spot in our hearts ...and that's why my dear wife asked me: Antonio...can we stay one more day ? ...with no-more words needed: thats why we stayed there a couple of more fantastic days ! Hoping to be back there, at Charleston, as soon as we can... Perhaps on this new 2018 year...that just began !

My husband and I stayed on the Club level over the weekend for a short trip. I can not say one negative thing about this hotel. Our stay was fabulous! The food was phenomenal, the room was beautiful, and the service was out of this world. If you are in Charleston, The Belmond should be on your list of hotels to stay will not be disappointed!

This hotel has one of the better club floors of all the hotels that I have stayed at.Amanda the bartender on the club floor is great. The location is in the downtown area which has great restaurants and shopping and historic sights.Beautiful walkway which connects to a mini mall with very upscale stores.Large rooms with marble bathrooms. They have a pool which we did not use.If you are going to Charleston I recommend this hotel as one one the best hotels .The hotel has Palmetto Cafe which has breakfast and lunch. One restaurant Charleston Grill which is fine dining and a bar called the Thoroughbred Club.Upscale hotel and very beautiful at Christmas because they have a wonderful winter display in the lobby.

Beautiful hotel within walking distance of many of Charleston's historic sites and neighborhoods. Our room on the second floor had a balcony overlooking the market, and was very comfortable and well-appointed. Staff were charming and thoughtful. But I loved the location best of all, because I love to walk the cities I visit, and this hotel's location was perfect for that. I did not eat in any of the hotel restaurants (there are so many amazing restaurants in the area that I wanted to try), so I can't comment on that. But the hotel bar, the Thoroughbred, is classic - comfortable, red leather chairs, no TV, live pianist - great place to meet, talk and relax. This hotel had all the amenities I could want, yet was low-key and comfortable.

Enjoyed a large luxurious room with bathrobes. The hotel has an onsite bar and restaurant. Beautiful lobby with multiple entrances. Nice pool for swimming laps and hot tub. Located in the heart of town. Walk to everything.
