Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

I was in Charleston for a group meeting, and the Belmond was our group hotel. This is a very nice hotel that is in a great location. You walk right out the back door and you are on Meeting street. It is a short walk to the water, and not too far from the wonderful historic homes. The rooms were great, the indoor pool out area outside the pool were great, and the services they provided for our group meetings were great. I definitely recommend staying at this hotel if in Charleston.

This is a beautiful hotel located in the heart of the city. A short walk to the Charleston Visitor Center where the friendliest tourist guides can be found. The hotel staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. The rooms are very well maintained and the maid service is as good as I have ever encountered. One of the city's main attractions is the market. This is several blocks long and is the marketplace for local vendors to sell their wares. It is located across the street from the hotel. Horse drawn carriage rides are available just two block away and any tour you might want to take is available from the visitor center. There are restaurants, bars and shops within the hotel complex.

The Belmond is located in a good downtown South area walkable to shopping and restaurants. It is a short bike ride to the Battery area. The Belmond has a rooftop pool which is open air - meaning that it is partially covered but with open walls. It also has tables on the perimeter. I would recommend other rooftops in town for socializing or "hanging out." This one seems to go with the spa which is located on the same floor. A few reasons for my 3.5 star rating - positives - good location, good service (valet, front desk etc), lobby is very nice and gives the luxury vibe, beds are very comfortable, bathrooms are luxurious. Not as positives - coffee makers are not in room and coffee is for purchase in the lobby...wish it had been made available which is usually standard for a 4+ star hotel, The views from the hotel rooftop and many rooms are building views, the room itself was on the smaller side, the bathroom wasn't completely clean and housekeeping was called - they did come right away, the price per night here seems high in relation to other nearby hotels although it seems to be warranted by the lobby and service. Overall I would say this is a nice place to stay but there are many other places to stay that could be just as good or not better for the price.

Traveled here with my 8 month old grandson and daughter who was there on business. What made this hotel so perfect was the location. It was across the street from the City Market which is an open air market that spans about 4 blocks. What was most enjoyable was my ability to stroll with my grandson to so many historic sites over several days. The hotel was very nice. We ate at a couple of the restaurants which were just OK. My daughter, who scheduled her event here, was pleased with the staff and the food that was provided. The room we had was a little cramped with two queens and a baby crib. It also had a mini fridge and a coffeemaker. But beds were comfy and the room was clean. Would recommend staying here.

Great location, beautiful facility, great on-site restaurants and bars. But the hotel service lets this place down. Arrived early (11am) so we weren't expecting the room to be quite ready but the woman at desk said she could put rush order on the room and to come back in an hour. So we had lunch in the hotel, came back 90 minutes later. She said, oh the cleaning staff still hasn't confirmed it's ready, come back in an hour. So, we came back an hour later and still not ready. There were other staff at the desk who overheard this and did nothing to help. By the way, we were staying in a suite for 4 nights, it wasn't as if we were staying in a basic room. If the room wasn't going to be ready until later, just tell us the truth instead or jerking us around. We wasted 3-4 hours we could have done something else if truly the room was not going to be ready. So we went right over to the concierge/manager and complained to him. Lo and behold, it was ready right away. Why she could not have done the same?? She ruined the start of the trip. Room was spacious, quiet and comfortable during the stay. But absolutely no view which was surprising for a suite. Don't waste your money for a suite unless you really need the extra space. Couple times we requested valet to have car available early the next morning for Day trips (tipped them well) but the car was still way in the back of 3rd story garage. Other times they did great. Better off parking yourself. Last issue, we came back to room on 3rd day to find the closet door handle ripped off and laying on room floor, must have been bumped into by cleaning staff. Made notice to have it quickly fixed while we were away, front desk said they would have it done right away. Came back 3 hours after being out, the handle still sitting on the floor not fixed. Told the guy again at front desk it still wasn't fixed, "oh, uh, sorry" was his only response. This is NOT 5 star service. I would have preferred staying at a boutique place nearby and got better service. Too bad the staff undercut a nice facility. They do have a nice large pool area for relaxing. I almost gave a 4-rating because of the facility.
