Belmond Charleston Place in Charleston, South Carolina

The South is known for its genteel hospitality, and Belmond Charleston Place is a prime example why. Understated service is ever-present. Under a 12-foot hand-blown Venetian chandelier, a grand open-arm staircase leads to rooms decorated in refined neutrals. Next door, an Art Deco theater restored by the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and at the Charleston Grill nightly live jazz accompanies a AAA Four-Diamond dinner menu of gourmet Southern classics.

Step out onto your Juliet balcony to watch Charleston wake up. Wander through narrow cobblestoned streets, tripping across eclectic local boutiques and history markers dating from the Civil War. Take a picturesque countryside drive to America’s only tea plantation. After a soul-warming plate of buttery grits and shrimp, snuggle up in a horse-drawn carriage as it ambles on Southern time.

The hotel is quite posh with a price tag that is appropriate. I rate it Poor because of a problem we had with the hot water. On our arrival, I wanted to shower to prepare for cocktails and dinner with friends. No hot water. I visited the concierge and complained about it and was told it would be fixed. Next morning, plenty of hot water. That afternoon we went on a harbor tour and it was cold. When we returned to our room, my wife wanted to use some hot water in the bathroom sink to warm her hands. NO HOT WATER. I called the desk and they sent an engineer up to look at the situation. He told me that our room was at the end of a loop and that the boiler may have been turned off. He called a few minutes later to tell me that the boiler was off and that we should have hot water later. At about 7 PM, I had to let the shower run for a full ten minutes before we had enough hot water for a shower. I have written the general manager of the hotel about the situation. When we checked out, I told the clerk that they should not be renting the room out (Room 246) until they had that situation corrected. It has been ten days since my letter to the hotel and no response as yet. I would not return to this property.

We stayed for just a couple of nights but everything was up to scratch. Staff polite extremely helpful. Bed, pillows extremely comfortable. We were on the club floor suite, the size was huge with 2 bathrooms & very thoughtfully one shower was in the bathtub and the other had a regular for those who couldn’t get into the tub. Amenities were of very good quality. It’s located very centrally and everything is walkable distance. The visitor centre a minutes walk from the fare. Market street full of lovely stores around the corner. The historic market is literally at the doorstep. The restaurants particularly the grill had “soul” satisfying food. Worth every dollar.

We were at another hotel higher up and North on Meeting Street and were moved here by Hotels.com because of problems there. Wow!!! This hotel is perfectly located very close to the historic downtown, City Market, churches, shopping, dinning, horse and buggy rides and so on. When you walk into the lobby, you know at once that you made the right choice. Staff is outstanding in every respect. The king room that we had, although no view to speak of was excellent....clean...beautiful...great bathroom with marble all around and a beauty of a tub and shower. Nice desk and bed and large screen LG-LED TV. Nice robes and slippers. High end shops are attached at the lobby level and dinning with jazz music in one restaurant of several choices. Ice stations on our floor. Nightly turn down service. Quiet. Included wi-fi. Coffee station for am grab and go. Valet parking and nice indoor pool and sundeck. Nice looking spa.

If you are looking for luxury, look no further. Everything was top notch from the decor in the rooms to the 4th floor rooftop. Irina's customer service was above and beyond to make our stay extra special. Front desk was accommodating. Staff was extremely friendly. Be sure to visit Alex, the bartender. He is a wealth of knowledge and quite the historian when it comes to Charleston. Looking forward to coming back.

This hotel came highly recommended. You cant beat the location and the city view suite was comfortable and clean. We used the pool and roof top sitting area and food was fine. Before we arrived concierge [ Rick and Leanne ] were super helpful in setting up a few services we needed. One being a great private tour with Ian. I would highly recommend this. We learned a lot about the city and history of Charleston. I think front desk staff, manager and concierge[ in person ] need to practice not being so curt and cold and remember that working in a hotel is all about customer service. Usually at a high end hotel they have a better attitude. I didn't feel that southern charm with the staff, but really liked the hotel.
