Excellent location

Loved the location of this hotel. We were able to walk to everywhere! Loved the turn down service. Excellent hospitality! Loved the coffee in the morning on every floor. Everything was clean & great here. Only complaint was no mini fridge in the hotel room. We just got lots of ice & poured our drinks over the ice.

Southern comfort with a flare

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Southern comfort with style, not only because of the geographic location within the city but the atmosphere expressed through decorations of the period it symbolizes. The rooftop bar is comfortable with a mix of locals and the tourists passing through. The Grill 225 Bar was alive in the evening with a mix of the casual passerby along side those dressed for the more upscale evening. The room itself boast of comfortable beds topped with 4 comfortable pillows for sleeping, which is not what I have found to be true for most hotels. In the morning you walk down your hallway to help yourself to fresh coffee and pastries, and return in the afternoon from your day of shopping to an assortment of freshly baked cookies. The housekeeping staff was not only polite and quick to help with any request, but actually went out of their way to inquire if there was anything else we needed.

All the southern charm you could ask for in a hotel, in the perfect location

We had the best family long weekend at the Market Pavilion Hotel with our adult children. The hotel is beautiful with all the southern charm you could want, and well maintained. We especially enjoyed the coffee and croissants in the breakfast parlor on our floor, and spent time there reading while the kiddos slept in. A really nice way to start our day. The hotel service was impeccable, but a special shout out to Theresan and to the concierge (didn’t get her name) and the red-haired young woman at the desk (again, didn’t get her name). They were all so helpful and cheerful and greeted us every time we entered the hotel. The location is perfect if you want to stroll the historic district. The roof top bar was a nice option when we were too tired to do any more walking. Just a fantastic time. We will stay there again. One thing to note: there is a dress code for the hotel (not just for their restaurant), but it did not seem to be strictly enforced. Lots of people wearing ball caps, including us, without being scolded. It was a warm friendly place to stay.

Unpleasant

Our Market Pavilion check-in was a hard landing. The entrance is on the corner of a narrow street congested with walkers from the adjacent market building. It's like maneuvering into aisle 3 of big box store to reach the hotel entrance. Our arrival was also gummed by photo-shoots (apparently fashion ads) both outside and inside the petite revolving door entrance of the Market Pavilion. This was our first stay so I was unsure about parking options, but the mess outside necessitated valet. I wedged into an opening and asked two uniformed guys if I was in the right place for valet parking. They looked our way but didn't answer, which was odd. At first I thought we had interrupted their viewing of the photo-shoot, but even when one guy approached the car, he was fully silent. OK. I left the keys and we carried our bags in through the crowd. The desk person was surprisingly brusque. She demanded photo ID and credit card like a penal boss. We had been upgraded but the room had no windows, and who would want no windows, she reasoned, so she downgraded us to a room which was not ready an hour before 4 PM check-in (whereas the windowless room had been ready, she told us after the change). OK. Go have lunch, she directed (what, it's 3 PM?), and she'd call us when the room was ready. She didn't. But she did call to ask if we left our car keys. I told her they were in the car (I'd told the silent guys that 45 minutes ago) and couldn't believe our car was still wedged into that busy crowd (with keys!) 45 minutes after our arrival. When we finally returned on our own, our room was ready but the key didn't work and they had to bring another. Look, the Market Pavilion is not a bad hotel. It's just a bit of an inconvenient, sadly maintained hotel (e.g. dirty spots on the hallway carpets) that might be saved by Southern charm but instead puffs fancy and comes off cold and a little oblivious to its pretension. Unless antique furniture styling is your main thing (and some looks more distressed than vintage), you can do better than the Market Pavilion in Charleston, especially for the cost. In a last-minute pinch of availability, it will do, especially if you approach with a sense of humor.

Market Pavillion, another great stay.

A superb experience as always at The Market Pavillion. It's the only hotel we use in Charleston and have done so for 20+ years. Suzanne C. is a true professional and represents this wonderful establishment perfectly. The Grille 225 was superb...the rooftop bar with the four cheese pizza is our favorite.
