Shanti Maurice, A Nira Resort in Chemin Grenier, Mauritius

In a destination as dreamy as they come, Shanti Maurice, A Nira Resort makes the island of Mauritius even more enchanting. The property itself is 36 acres, situated between sugarcane fields and powder-soft white sand beach, with the brilliant blue waters of the Indian Ocean stretching as far as the eye can see. In a place as sublime and exotic as this, Shanti Maurice is a perfect haven, providing the kind of quality and comfort that such a spectacular vacation deserves. When it comes to your accommodations, there are no rooms here - only suites and villas, of course, and every one is magazine-spread worthy. All face the ocean, with floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors to bring the bright outdoors in. Furthering the integration with nature, large balconies or patios and stone-lined outdoor rain showers add elements of pleasure and ideal places to relax in peace and private. Despite your far-flung locale, you will be ever still connected with internet access, DVD players, and high definition televisions throughout. Whether you choose to shut off connection to the outside world, or relish in some free time and entertainment, Shanti Maurice is ready to help you do it all in style.

Ready to really delve into this exotic island vacation? Try a truly sensual experience at Nira Spa, where ancient Ayurvedic practices are fused with contemporary techniques to provide indulgent body treatments, ultra unwinding massages, and unique spa rituals. Being that Mauritius is such a paradise for the senses, it is only fitting that the culinary offerings at Shanti Maurice are one of the resort's most outstanding features. Food lovers will find a variety of unique flavors and aromas, but the true soul of Mauritius can best be found in the old fashioned home cooking, which Shanti Maurice brings you directly with its genuine Grandma's Kitchen experience. Relish in authentic mealtime around a communal table, as you have the opportunity to visit the local home of one of the resort's own team members, and enjoy an authentic family meal prepared for your enjoyment by the all-important matriarch of the household - Grandma herself. Then there is the Fish and Rhum Shack, a beachside barbecue experience that lends local culture to guests, where the freshest fish, vegetables, and more are enjoyed by lantern light, plus rum from a nearby distillery. A more traditional dining experience can be had at Stars, which offers a refined dinner menu and ocean views, and Pebbles, with everything from salads to pastries. The leisure and activity options at Shanti Maurice are equally robust, from the nearby golf course to tennis, water sports and more. Explore the island on an excursion, or simply stay put in the sun and sand. When you are at Shanti Maurice, A Nira Resort, time and place is all about you.

This review is based on 7 Nights in the last week of Sep,2016. I booked Luxury Villa with pool as SPG Gold member. Since it is a design hotels brand, you will not be getting any of SPG benefits. Also, if you pay by SPG Amex, you will not be getting the bonus points. It will be considered a general purchase. I recommend paying with Chase reserve card so you can get x3 the points. Location: The resort is on the south side of the island; it is around 45min-1hour from the Airport, I used Maki Transfers for pick-up and return for a total price of 2,645 MRU. The resort is secluded; nothing is close by, I recommend to rent a car. If you don’t want to rent I recommend using Taxi Service Mauritius, they have the best prices, and their drivers are knowledgeable. The capital is about 1 hour away from the resort. There is a beautiful public beach you can walk to. Service: 1) We were greeted by the concierge, Checking in took a very long time, almost 2 hours. Coming from a long flight, this was not acceptable. The concierge should at least offer us a small tour of the resort so we can get familiar with the facilities and their location. 2) Staff, in General, are nice & helpful, except for the concierge. 3) I don’t recommend dealing with the concierge at all in booking activities or taxi. They are very expensive if you book from them. 4) Every day there is a special night that repeats most of the time twice every week: - International Buffet: the Buffet is not that big. Food tastes below average. (We paid 3375 MRU for two) - Sega Dance: This is the islands’ traditional dance accompanied with BBQ buffet. The dancers looked very bored, and they were not into it. The food was tasty; I highly recommend the garlic bread. The event is usually at the beach were the Fish Shack, unless it is raining. (We paid 4175 MRU for two) - Lacaze Mama: Indian food with a band signing in the Herb garden. If you like Indian food, you will like the food. (We paid 3375 MRU for Two) - One of the nights it was a lobster night, I didn’t try it out. 5) Breakfast was good; the menu has a lot of items, some of the items are Indian breakfast. Please note that the Indian breakfast is very spicy. Make sure to order the pastries; they are tasty. 6) Don’t order their burger! One of the worst I ever eaten. 7) In general, the food is not that great. 8) The resort has many facilities, even a place for kids. 9) I tried almost every type of messages that they offered at the spa, not worth the money. Tip: Get a consult from their “Doctor” before you do any message to get 20% discount. Villa: 1) They had a welcome drink for us at the villa with fruits 2) The Luxury villa with pool was nice. It has two bedrooms. 3) The master bedroom has a shower and bathtub, while the other only shower. 4) The pool was big & amazing with the right temperature; you will need to ask the staff before you arrive to heat up the pool. At least two days before you arrive. 5) The pool was not private; anyone can pass by it. The fish shack is in front of the villas. If you want complete privacy at the pool, I don’t recommend this resort. 6) The pool has bubble massage. 7) The villas on the rocky side of the beach, so you can’t swim there. You have to go to the other side of the resort if you want to enjoy the beach. 8) The wireless internet was decent. 9) Villa cleaning service is very slow. We once asked them to clean our Villa at 6:30 AM when we came back at 3 PM, the villa was still not cleaned. 10) There is an outside shower.

I have visited many resorts in my life and I am not normally a reviewer, but I felt compelled to write about our stay at Shanti Maurice. The resort is beautiful and well designed, the gardens, the bedrooms, the beach, the spa and the restaurants are all a pleasure to experience. I agree with the previous reviewer that continuing investment is required in the refurbishment and the team training to maintain the standards expected of a 5-star resort. We understand that there have been some changes in management and we experienced a few issues with service in our first week and when we gave the feedback the team stepped up and improved. The food is delicious and offers enough choice for a long stay - thank you to chef Willi and his team - there are four restaurants spotted around the resort - Stars, Rum Shed, Fish Shack and Le Kaze Mama and all are stylish, have great atmosphere and offer something very different to each other. There are not many restaurants locally, so this is important. (If you do venture out Chateau Bel Ombre restaurant is well worth a visit - good food in a striking colonial style house on an old sugar plantation) All of the spa team are highly professional and we had some great treatments - thank you. Book a deep tissue massage with Annie - it is amazing. As a family with 2 kids, the Kids Club is again a well designed space with great facilities. The service is exceptional and enabled us to relax on the beach, have treatments and rest ! Prema and the team make you feel that your kids are safe and arrange loads of wholesome and exciting activities. Our kids want to go back right now and Monty and Rufus have already written to Prema to tell her that they miss her. (We got home yesterday!) Apologies for my spelling but just to mention some of the incredible team: Priya (receptionist), Vishal (Assistant restaurant manager), Prishi and Sandy (Waiters), Andy (Barman), Kunkun (Porter), Yannesh (Rooms manager) and Ashweni (housekeeper), Satish, Ashkar and Nitish (on the beach), Rollo and Jepeto (Watersports) and of course Prema, Kemini and Reana in the Kids Club. All of the team are so kind and each individual really cares about their work. We miss you all....thank you to the General manager, Haje Thurau. If you are a couple, family or just looking for something special in Mauritius and you want an exceptional resort, you should stay at Shanti Maurice. In the words of Vishal in the restaurant their attitude is 'What more can we do to please you"

The hotel itself has a wonderful location, unfortunately the owners are not investing a penny to keep their property in shape and that shows! The furniture is worn out. There are so many areas of improvement that i don't want to get into it. A message for the owners renovate your hotel instead of only cashing in you are not competitive with other hotels in Mauritius and you are definitely not a 5star hotel!!! The service in the restaurant is super slow . Get your order done by 6 pm to be served at 7:00 pm.The reviews are misleading! So much for the negatives! The Positives: The Spa is just pure Bliss!!!! Wonderful treatments just an oasis of wellbeing. The Cuisine with Willi as Executive Chef is very good although the breakfast needs to be improved as well. The guys that are taking care of the Watersports, Rollo, Jepeto are just such nice fellows. Nitish that is serving all day long at the beach is a treasure. This hotel is such a relaxing place but the continues issues are just ruining all relaxation. If you are looking for a nice beach, relaxing and zen atmosphere and good food this is the place for you .The Kids club is wonderful..Preema and Reena are so nice with the kids, just incredible...we did miss your Kids Club when we left,xx I really do hope that the new manager can turn this place around in a good direction, the staff and the hotel deserve it big time!!!! Thank you for all the efforts you made to please us!!!!! All the Best!!!! N.B.: Kimon is missing the you Preema!

Before this holiday, I said to myself: I want white sand, blue sea, and peace – nothing more… This hotel offers a great opportunity to relax and forget your stress and anxiety. The hotel is located in a quiet, peaceful spot right next to the ocean. I loved the crystal clear water and had the chance to snorkel with an experienced instructor, who helped me discover an amazing underwater world. The hotel has one of the most beautiful SPA centers I’ve ever seen, with a highly professional team. Massages, Reiki healing, saunas, Jacuzzis, yoga and meditation sessions in the morning – there’s everything for both your body and your soul. And all that in the open air… The hotel has large grounds with lovely pathways. The food is simply wonderful, with fresh ingredients and a wide variety of dishes; performances by local artists are held every evening. I found them really enjoyable I’m especially grateful to Ms Priya Bonomally for her hospitality, her warm welcome, and the help she offered when I needed it most. Thank you, Priya It was a wonderful vacation. I’d love to visit you again!

I really, really liked this resort until I checked out and they tried to charge me again for a (very expensive) spa package that I had already paid for when I booked my stay. That is completely unacceptable. Did not even get a proper apology. Make sure you check your bill carefully if you decide to stay here!
