With echoes of billiard balls, poker chips, and clinking glasses frozen within its walls, this 1890’s Venetian Gothic landmark in the Chicago Loop springs back to life as an incomparable historic downtown Chicago hotel—where the spirit of play reigns supreme. After all, this is the city where the can-and-will-do attitude of Ernie “Let’s Play Two!” Banks lives on, where the father of Chicago blues, Muddy Waters, shook all night long at the Checkerboard Lounge, and Sir Duke tickled the ivories at The Blue Note. And this is the club whose historic members swam with five-time Olympic gold medalist Johnny Weissmuller—a.k.a. the original Hollywood Tarzan—and watched their fellow member Pudge Heffelfinger own so much end zone, he became football’s first pro. Today, Chicago Athletic Association is both a stunning hotel offering outstanding guest rooms and a historic monument to the big-shouldered, switch hitting spirit that defines our city with a downtown location in the Chicago Loop.

The hotel was quite unique, although it was very dark. View of brick wall from our room. Great location. Great rooftop bar.

#1 - The hotel team of associates were excellent in their roles to making our stay comfortable! #2 - The room itself needed a facelift but the history and charm of the building made it unique and worth a stay, but I wouldn’t pay the price of a suite again as it didn’t live up to the higher price point. UIC is a quick 15 minute ride away (we were attending our daughter’s graduation); and there were several excellent restaurants within walking distance or a quick cab ride. The river tours were also close by and well worth it! Onsite game room was a plus, as well as a decent coffee shop off the lobby (Fairgrounds).

Wonderful stay! Dave the doorman is exceptional! The food was great, incredible location, classy, and I would definitely recommend!

This was a "wedding" hotel that was convenient to the celebration venue. The location is great for the parks and attractions of Chicago - you can walk to tons. The hotel was strange to us. Lobby is on 2nd floor. Halls and rooms are dark. There was almost no place to unpack our stuff - used a luggage rack we had to squeeze around and another bag on an ironing board. Two teeny slideout drawers. I wouldn't want to be there more than a couple of nights. It was clean, the doormen and concierge were SUPER nice and helpful, and the location was great. But we just didn't like being there. It depends what you want.

I LOVED STAYING AT THIS HOTEL. Very unique and stylish. They did a great job renovating the old, building, and keeping the charm, into a modern new hotel. The rooftop restaurant and bar, Cindy's, is phenomenal! My only feedback is the following: - 1) Fix the WiFi (it is super slow and bad everywhere in the hotel) - 2) Fix the elevators (they were very slow) - 3) Improve the stairs between floors - 4) Improve the quality and consistency of the food.
