The Loft King rooms are worth the extra expense -- super spacious, loved the separate "media room" with projection TV and surround sound. The KEYPR system worked seamlessly to set up turndown service (right on time at 8pm and ready when we returned from dinner) and room service in the AM was super quick -- ordered a full pot of coffee via tablet and it was at our door in 20 minutes.

This was my first stay at The James Chicago. I liked a great deal about it: the location, the rooms, the funky, urban vibe, the complimentary filtered water, the nice yoga mat. The guys who manage the front curb and lobby are great: every single one, without exception, was quick with a smiling greeting - day after day. I had mixed experience with the front desk staff - some were pleasant (the gentlemen) and a few women were icy. The housekeeping staff was also pleasant and excellent. Also the waiters in the restaurant - excellent and efficient. My biggest gripe comes with billing: The James adds a Facilities Use Fee ($16.) to every room night. Can I opt out of the Facilities Use Fee? No? Then why don't you just add it to the price of the room and call it a day? When a hotel advertises a certain rate for a room and then - oh, by the way - adds on another mandatory charge to every room - this practice strikes me as sneaky. It's like the airlines now: oh, you want to check a bag? That will be another charge. Just charge a price, please, and add some decent customer service along with that price. Another annoying and confusing practice is that they charge this Facilities Use Fee and then - if you dine in their restaurant or bar - they give you a $10.00 credit each day. I dined in the restaurant every day, so I was looking for a $10.00 credit on my bill for each day stayed. At checkout, I asked about the daily credit. She assured me she could see it on her screen, but it doesn't show on my bill. What? Why make it so sneaky and confusing. I didn't have time to argue and the woman at the desk was annoyed that I was asking for clarification. When I got home I compared my bill with my paper receipts - save your receipts! - and, in fact, they had failed to apply one credit. I called the hotel and spoke with yet ANOTHER icy woman who - after a long, silent, search - issued a supposed credit to my card - which may take up to a week to show. I love it (sarcasm) when hotel charges show up instantly on a card, but a credit? Oh, that's gonna take some time. The whole billing back-and-forth left me with an unpleasant taste in my mouth. Really unfortunate, because - before checkout - I was very happy with The James Chicago. Now it makes me want to check-out other options. There are a lot.

The hubs and I enjoyed a little getaway to Chicago, and stayed at The James. What an ideal location - everything we wanted to do and see was so close. The staff were lovely and the accommodations very comfortable. The room was quite large and the water pressure in the shower was great! Our room was on the north side of the building overlooking Ontario St., so there was some traffic noise. Each evening they served complimentary wine and snacks, and there was coffee in the lobby each morning. We look forward to our next visit.

This hotel is very conveniently located in downtown Chicago just a block from Michigan Ave. The staff is kind, responsive and helpful. They have a complimentary Happy hour in the lobby from 5-6 pm serving wine and some little snacks. Also complimentary coffee (which is quite good!) and muffins in the lobby until 10 am. The rooms are nice with a hip vibe to them. Really enjoyed the extra bench & large table in our room allowing us to spread out a little more. Being so close to everything you will experience street noise so I would suggest asking for a room higher up. All in all we had a very pleasant stay.

I travel often for work (2-3 times a month), yet it is my first time to write such a biased yet accurate account of my experience. First, it took over 20 minutes for me to check in due to some unknown issue, which was solved eventually. Front desk staff didn’t even apologize for such wait. I am generally not picky when it comes to service, but the front desk staffs were unfriendly. Experienced the same unfriendliness during check out as well. I am allergic to dog furs; however, there was a hugh poodle —owned by one of the staffs— roaming around the lobby.
