This hotel is centrally located in the heart of Chicago. I stayed for a total of 10 days over the course of two weeks on a business trip. The rooms are clean and bed was very comfortable. Unfortunately the elevators run a little slow. I ordered room service one night and was a little frustrated as the menu in the room wasn't up to date. The staff was always pleasant but not overly service oriented. My key card failed on many occasions and front staff commented that it was a known issue. I loved that the windows open so I was able to have some fresh air although the traffic noise can be bothersome.

A colleague and myself were travelling for work. The system with the tablets in the room is phenomenal! The help with the luggage and oversized trade show booth was awesome. They were in renovations so not sure if that had anything to do with it.... but wanted to have so drinks in the room and there is no ice machine. $6 for a glass half full of ice! Great spot and the ice is my only issue!

Let me say I think the bar at the James is one of the best along the Michigan Ave strip. The bartenders are fantastic. I also always enjoy eating eating at Primehouse, great food. Based on my excellent experiences with the bar and Restaurant at the James, I decided to Book an "Apartment Suite" in the hotel. I found the staff friendly and accommodating. The room itself was extremely large with a great view. It had not been recently been redone so there was some wear from use, but it was immaculate and exhibits a unique sense of style. That being said the sofa in the living area had an extremely low back with made it difficult to sit in for long periods. The chair wasn't much better. Style over function. We spent little time in the living are do to the comfort issue. There were 2 smart TV's (with a large selection of channels), you can watch YouTube, Netflix etc. The bed was extremely comfortable. The robes were top notch and the slippers provided by the hotel were a pleasant surprise. I will definitely stay here again, just choose a different type of room.

Great location and we really liked this hotel. It's not in the realm of The Peninsula in terms of luxury, but it's easily 1/3 the price and better than the experience we've had at many other hotels in the area in the same price range (and other than the Peninsula, some of the other high end hotels). We arrived several hours before the official check in time and thought we'd have to store our bags, but although the type of room we reserved wasn't available yet, we were offered the choice of a larger room at no up-charge if we wanted to check in then. Check in was very quick too. Our room was a little quirky, not huge, but comfortable. Some reviewers have said the bathroom was too small...ours was nicely appointed though snug space-wise, but plenty of room for our stuff – really, this is all I need or expect in an older, smaller hotel building, but if you want a palatial bathroom, it isn't. The beds are comfortable...not as comfortable as at some hotels that make a big deal about their beds, though the pillows at least for me were more comfortable than at some of those. The mini bar was excellent – expensive as can be expected in any hotel, but the selection was better, and it was not just the usual mini-bottles. We didn't use room service or concierge services because we were just there for one day/night and had made our own reservations for both dinner and brunch before we arrived. Because we were having brunch we thought we'd have to check out prior to going and have our bags stored, but it turned out check out time is 2 pm, which was nice. I don't know if that's just on Sundays or not, but it was nice not to have to ask for a late check out or to have the bags held. Everyone we met that worked for the hotel was extremely friendly. The new lobby is under construction behind a partition right now, so you have to go up either a flight of stairs or an elevator to the 2nd floor to check in...not a big deal to us, but I guess it could be to others. Only caveat for us was that the elevators are very small, so at peak check out hours you might wait for one and the one that stops may be full...it wasn't really a problem since we weren't in a hurry, but if you're on a schedule it could be an issue. All in all, we really liked this hotel and will definitely stay again.

The location of the hotel was perfect- walking distance to restaurants and the Magnificent Mile! The hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating. Although the lobby was under construction, you wouldn't know it unless someone told you. The rooms were very spacious with wonderful amenities. It started raining just before we left for dinner, but there was an umbrella in the closet so we were able to venture out without any worries! The only negative I can think of is there is no shuttle to and from the airport.
