Booked a King Bed Loft at a decent value considering the location of the hotel. Room was large and comfortable but lacked decoration and appeared slightly worn. The Loft included two flat-screens and one projector, although using these proved to be a hassle - the flatscreens did not have Netflix, and the projector/loudspeaker/dvd-player combination was relatively hard to turn on as no guide was given. Bed was very comfortable and a range of toiletries were provided. Turn-down service only provided when requested, did not include the treat that was advertised. The app, however, is quite useful and effective, and requests were dealt with in a timely matter. Tried breakfast once, it was a relatively standard hotel breakfast, not too bad but nothing to rave about. Much better breakfast options in close proximity, plus trader joes is right across the street. One thing that was rather disappointing was that the loft was located on a very low floor facing inwards - there was no view and the sky was not visible except when leaning into the windows. The check-in and check-out service was fast but rather unfriendly. Would recommend for short stays as the location is great and the hotel does provide some value for money.

Service, service, service combined with location, location, location make for a great hotel experience. Rooms are small but clean, nicely appointed. Staff is friendly and helpful. Decor is hipster chic and appears to be done slightly on the cheap. Location is outstanding. Tip - prepay parking across the street and save a fortune.

I can only speak for the room I had and hope it is an anomaly, but it was well below the expected standard and star-rating. The room was worn (worn carpet, lampshade coming apart) and dusty, the showerhead was dirty enough to not want to use it, the window-blind in the shower was also dirty, the bedside table was worn and not very clean, and there was a loose screw on the carpet. It's great to offer touchscreen room-service tablets and a mini-bar display, but more important to get the basics right first, like replacing the fallen-off room number outside the door, a scratched TV screen, or removing the messy excess paint on the window-frames. When I informed staff and requested a room change if possible, the front desk were informative in so much as saying "No, we don't have any other rooms", but then silence... An odd approach to ending an in-person interaction. Having stayed in a selection of pther hotels in the neighborhood, and being familiar with the other hotels in the group, I thought this would be the best. I checked out and found another hotel nearby. I should mention I booked what I imagine is one of their lowest-rate rooms, but still, on a weeknight you can find better in town. The one positive note was the welcoming and helpful bellhop on arrival. I'm not sure I will be back when next in Chicago.

I'm Chicago there are so many options that provide a good location and clean rooms. These qualities are a basic hum drum need. The James Hotel does nothing to stick out from just being an overpriced run of the mill property in Chicago. I could recommend multiple other hotel for the same price that actually provide good service and care about their guests. Front desk girl was less than friendly, and staff ignores the guests unless you approach them to ask for someone. Is it so difficult to say hi when a guest walks by you?? It is here. Staff obviously are not happy working here & would rather be elsewhere. In my experience this is a sign of Management that does not coach their team, nor care about the customer experience!
