I stayed at the James in June with my daughter and really enjoyed it. The location was ideal, the restaurant was delicious and the room was perfect. I returned in April with my husband and the hotel was undergoing major renovations. His first impression was not a good one, the lobby was dramatically smaller and not welcoming, the inviting staircase was being redone and added to the overall look of renovation, unfortunately, and reception had moved to the 2nd floor. We were graciously escorted to the elevator and told where we would find reception. We checked in effortlessly, and went to our room. The room was not what we expected. On the plus side, it was spacious and perfect for a family as it had another bed tucked into as alcove making it feel private. There was a table with 2 chairs and a spacious seating area with a tv. The bathroom was spacious. The bedroom was a direct extension of this space and was very cramped. I had a very difficult time getting to my side of the bed. The length of the bed nearly reached the small wall with the wall mounted tv, so I felt a bit like a contortionist or I could have used the bed instead of the floor to get to my side... The negatives: the furnishings were atrocious -a not at it's best 1970's look. The sofa wasn't the most comfortable had large visible stains and a very visible rip. The bathroom had a leak so the floor outside it was perpetually wet, which was disgusting. The bed was rock hard. When we stayed in June, we had breakfast vouchers but those weren't available this time, at a reasonable rate. The location is superb though - the proximity to the magnificent mile, lake Michigan, navy pier, millennium park and the art institute made this a great location for our needs. However, in our next return, we will choose another hotel. There are several in the area, which is very safe. I did notify the hotel of our experience and they did credit me back some money, so they're customer service is excellent. Wish I could give it 2 glowing reviews, but i can't.

The service was impeccable. The concierge was there to suggest us some activities and amazing restaurants. The emplacement is perfect. You are close to everything you need (food, sightseeing, activities). The hĂ´tel is very modern and very clean. We had a great time in this wonderful hotel in the Windy City.

We enjoyed our stay at The James Hotel Chicago. Our King City View room on the 14th floor was spotless, spacious and beautifully designed in a minimalist way. The decor was modern and very neutral, I.e., it was VERY beige… Not sure we would pay extra for “city view” room again as the hotel is a bit land locked so our view was of other buildings. Loved having the small sofa, coffee table and side chair; felt like a mini living room. Our bed was dreamy with great pillows and top-notch linens. The bathroom was decent size with tub/shower combo. We had plenty of large fluffy towels and the bath products were nice. We had a non-censored mini bar. No coffee maker in-room. We appreciated the complimentary filtered drinking water. Good water pressure and decent WiFi. Housekeeping was spot-on. Did not experience room "wear and tear" as some other reviewers noted. Love the 2:00 PM Check In and Check Out :) The Miracle Mile location is excellent and perfect for a downtown Chicago experience. It’s right of Rush Street. Close to many great restaurants, bars and shopping. EPIC Chicago Deep Dish pizza just steps away at Lou Malnati’s or Giordano’s. We love lunch at Rosebuds on Rush… Trader Joe’s Market right across the street and Walgreens just around the corner. Michigan Ave is just a stroll away and the hotel is walking distance to the lake weather permitting. Customer service was stellar. Every staff member we encountered were warm, welcoming and helpful. We travel to Chicago often and have stayed in many wonderful hotels throughout this fantastic city. We enjoyed our stay at The James. It’s outstanding. Highly recommend! Note: If you’re a fan, check out the Rolling Stones exhibit at Navy Pier through July (I think). It’s super cool!! We also scored a late night dinner reservation at Bavette’s for excellent cocktails and perfectly prepared steak. Just sayin…

When I visited the lobby was undergoing extensive refurbishment work, but this wasn't a problem. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room, which was a standard room, was beautiful, a good size, with designer furniture and a good bar and snack selection. The bathroom was large. My stay was very comfortable.

Very clean inside. Excellent location (safe neighbor, lots of eatery, magnificent miles shopping area are right next). Morden interior impressed us a lot. Specifically, bathroom illumination during night time looks very thoughtful.
