We had a 10 day vacation in Phuket and the plan was to start out in Patong and then move to a quieter area towards the end of the stay. We were travelling with a baby so Patong turned out to be even less ideal than we anticipated; especially with the hotel being slightly below expectations. So we decided to check out a bit earlier and spend 2 days at Anantara before moving on to our original booking for the end of the vacation. However the reception, room and general feel at Anantara was so convincing that we chose to stay for the remainder of our time in Phuket. It was a last minute booking for a Sala Villa and i phoned them whether the complimentary limousine airport transfer could be converted to a transfer between our hotel in Patong and Anantara. They got back to me very quickly confirming that this would not be an issue and the limousine was waiting for us exactly on time with refreshments and cold towels on the day of our departure from Patong. When we arrived, we were given some pretty Jasmine bracelets and were quickly escorted to our room; this turned out to be a Beachfront Layan Pool Villa villa thanks to a complimentary upgrade. We did not realise this initially and only after going through the check-in process did we start to think that this might actually be a better room than we had booked. A small note: we did not get any welcome drinks and i wonder if this was forgotten as we discovered some chilled drinks in the fridge later which seemed to be unassigned. There was a thai hand-wash ceremony which was quite nice but i would have liked a little more explanation on the room facilities and what was included and what was chargeable. Either way, the whole stay had an excellent start and as far as i remember this was our first substantial complimentary upgrade ever. It was mid-afternoon soon and we were sitting by the pool on our sunbeds when we first had the feeling that we should just stay here if possible. It was significantly more expensive than our original hotel booking but everything was so beautiful that we decided: if they let us stay in the upgraded villa for the same rate, we should just stick around. We still did not know how good dinner or breakfast is so we tried to explore the possibility without making a commitment. It turned out to be feasible and we booked another 4 nights the next morning after having tried the wonderful breakfast and the amazing dinner at Dee Plee. There is very little i can add to what has already been explained or described in previous reviews. The breakfast is amazing although a slight change in variety would have been nice; there is a vast selection of dishes but it was the same more or less every day. It would have been nice to have at least one counter where the options would visibly change from day to day just for variety’s sake. Make sure you try the soup corner even if it seems strange at first to have soup for breakfast; the broth is excellent, there is a selection of different types of noodles and you can spice the whole thing up to your liking with the provided herbs, sauces and spices. Their fruit corner is richly stacked and we had delicious thai mangoes every morning sliced and diced, ready to eat. The hotel has the best egg station i have been to so far and everything is prepared perfectly (various omelettes, eggs benedict, fried eggs, poached eggs etc.). There is a large selection of fresh fruit juices and mixes. I also loved the small jars of mango sticky rice they had although it ran out fast and one portion just wasn’t enough for me. Srevice was excellent. The beach is as nice as it gets in Phuket and they haven’t disturbed nature too much. There is a beautiful island right across the beach and it’s a comfortable 5 minutes to paddle over with a kayak. You can also paddle along the shore and go over to Layan beach which is quite long and lovely at sunset. The villa was obviously very nice and still in good condition. The bathroom is huge and for once there is ample storage space available as well. The air-conditioning was a bit weird as the one in the bathroom was quick to cool down whilst the main area took a lot longer. A solution is to open the sliding doors to the bathroom and let the cool air flow to the living room. The bed was huge and extra comfortable and there were 2 sets of bathrobes each, meaning one for after bath and a separate silky one just to wear inside. Adequate number of TV channels available and also an Apple device if you want to watch movies etc. They supplied a beautiful, clean babycot for us upon request. The pool and beach area are well serviced and drinks and nibbles selection is good. Staff seemed a bit overworked sometimes but were generally very friendly and helpful. The pool is clean and well maintained with enough sunbeds available. The main highlights for us were the following (and i can’t recommend the hotel enough alone for these): 1. Kid’s Club: AMAZING! Relatively small room but well stocked with toys and run by 2 exceptional ladies who were just the best. Especially Pecky who took care of our daughter on multiple occasions and made sure that she is well entertained and looked after. Our 2 year old daughter loved her and keeps mentioning her weeks later; they became such good friends. This is the first time we felt absolutely comfortable with a hotel’s babysitting service (it cost about 10 USD an hour) and if we ever make it back to Phuket and Pecky is still there, we know where we are staying. 2. Dee Plee restaurant: the best food we had in Phuket and we tried a lot of places in Patong and down South. I went online to check the menu for you and make sure you try the Khao Soi Gai (curry noodle chicken thigh with egg noodles, with crispy noodle, pickled cabbage , shallots, dry chili oil and lime). I attached a photo but it’s not just the presentation; this was my favourite dish during our trip, really outstanding. And probably even more important: sign up for the Spice Spoons cooking class! My wife and I both agreed that this was the single best experience we had in Phuket and worth every penny. We opted for the private one which was a bit more expensive but you have the amazing chef all to yourself and the option to select 4 dishes off the menu that you want to learn. Everything was explained perfectly and we have since cooked 2 of the dishes back home almost to the same standard. One more thing: when you contemplate the price, think about the fact that you will have a private cooking class from one of the best chefs in Phuket, you will be served afterwards what you cooked (restaurant style), you receive a beautiful recipe card collection, a very nice Spice Spoons apron and some quality cutting boards. I initially thought the recipe collection would be a photocopied printout but it’s proper book-store quality. Take my advice and sign up! 3. Hotel grounds: we have been to the Seychelles, Mauritius, Maldives and many other places across the globe and have seen amazing hotel gardens but nothing like this. It’s as if every little area has been meticulously designed to include some sort of intricate detail so that no two square meters look the same. Another reviewer complained about a public road passing through but there are barely any cars coming out to this remote location and the hotel grounds are very well separated from it. Speaking of remote location, the hotel is a good 10-15 minute drive to a place called Laguna which has an extremely well stocked and quite large supermarket as well as numerous shops (nothing noteworthy) and restaurants. We ventured out one evening and tried the restaurant Tom Yam Goong which was recommended by a member of the reception staff...don’t go there. Food was average at best and prices were not cheap; the only bad food experience we had during our whole Phuket stay. Taxi will cost you 400 BHT one way so it’s not cheap but most restaurants offer free pick-up and drop-off, so if you know where you are going, give them a call (some are reluctant to drive out to Anantara though). The hotel could really do with a shuttle bus service. Service was brilliant across the resort. It got me thinking: the normal/basic rooms are very nice, have a very reasonable rate and guests staying there get to enjoy the same standard of service, whether it’s related to staff or breakfast or pool/beach. I think Anantara Layan is an amazing offer even if you are on a lower budget!

had an amazing stay, except had issues with the number of lizards in the room. it is quite common there, but if you have issues with lizards, you will have to ask the staff to deep clean your room. the staff was very welcoming and i enjoyed my stay there because of their service and the other activities provided! the location was exceptionally beautiful! i definitely would come back here again!

We travel there as a family with 2 young kids. The service was brilliant especially the extra focus on the kids. Room and facility is nice and clean. The pool villa we stayed in was very reasonable priced. Overall a very good experience

Staying at a anantara layan resort was by far the best accommodation booking for us. Our purpose to visit phuket was to relax and do a bit of sight seeing, and staying at anantara perfectly suited the purpose. The quite, serene and peaceful environment encapsulated the beauty of waters and nature perfectly and was a spa like experience on its own. The food was delicious and there were ample options for vegan and vegetarian guests too. And yummy they were. The quality of raw materials for food deserve a special mention here, being exotic. The library and rich dvd collection, ease and range of access of WiFi was marvellous. Quite a unique and first in our lifetime experience according to us. Phuket is like a beautiful cake and anantara resort is the icing on the cake.
