Château de la Barre has been home to the de Vanssay family since 1404, and today it offers an opportunity to preside over the French countryside amid 10 acres of flourishing gardens surrounded by 16th Century fortification walls. Manor rooms mix of antiques and family heirlooms with ornate chandeliers, fabric walls and Versailles parquet floors. Don't miss the twice-weekly Grand Siècle Dinner with the Count and Countess and the bespoke invite-only opportunities to mingle with Loire Valley society.

This is the ultimate chateaux experience in France-combined with a host who is an expert on arranging tours of France and in fact all of Europe. Exceptional and the rooms are full of museum quality antiques.

Our 2-night stay at this chateau was disappointing from beginning to end. Our rooms were freezing cold and tired, we never felt welcomed by our hostess and we were charged exorbitant prices for everything we did. The location is not good. It is very far from everything and there is nothing to do at the property so your only option is to travel great distances to other chateaus and restaurants, etc. I would not recommend it to anyone.

One of the saddest moments for my wife and I as COVID struck was the need to cancel what would have been our sixth stay at Chateau de la Barre with one of our grandchildren. Needless to say we've re-booked for mid summer 2021. Over the last 10 years we've stayed for visits ranging from a weekend to 10 days. Having tried most of the exquisite rooms each has its unique one-of-a-kind charm. Best of all are the hosts, the wine, food, conversation that Marnie and Guy offer. We've experienced the chateau as guests but also as the site of a wedding friends of ours had there. The house grounds and gardens set in the most beautiful countryside offered the perfect place for the best wedding event we have ever attended. Of course the chateau is well located for taking day trips from but closer to home one of our great pleasures when staying at the chateau is exploring the farmland surrounding it, buying pate at a nearby farm, arming ourselves with a bottle of wine and picnicking nearby. PERFECT!

From the time you arrive until you leave, your host, Count Guy De Vanassay, is warm, welcoming, and informative. We were greeted with a lovely dinner overlooking the pastoral surroundings. Our room was comfortable, pretty, and well-appointed. Breakfast was delicious...we were made to feel like we were the most important guests they had ever had, which I am sure the Count and Countess project to all their guests. The Chateau made an excellent base to explore the cheateaux and villages of the area. Before we departed, the Count gave us a full tour of his home and explained the history of his family. Can't say enough about what a unique experience this was. Highly recommend. Realize this is someone's family home and is not the Four Seasons Hotel.

We flew from Denver to CDG and rented a car--driving to Chartres and then Chateau de la Barre. We were warmly greeted by Marnie and Guy--given fine wine and a warm meal. The next day Marnie mapped out a driving tour through neighboring villages--filled with history and beautiful gardens. The chateau has gorgeous antiques, artwork and grounds. Our room was excellent. Highly recommended!
