Steenberg Hotel in Constantia, South Africa

Dating back to 1682, the Steenberg Hotel is an exquisite historic wine farm set in the foothills of South Africa's magnificent Constantia Valley. Although just 20 minutes from the center of Cape Town, this serene set of buildings - declared an official National Monument - is its own seductive world, surrounded by vineyards and an 18-hole championship golf course. The buildings have been lovingly restored and decorated traditionally with antiques in elegant 17th-century style. In your delightful guest room or suite, you will discover a wealth of treats, which may include a romantic patio with views of the vines and fairways.

Although you are close Cape Town's shops, restaurants and a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain, you may find it difficult to leave the Steenberg Hotel estate itself. You can experience the radiant energy of The Spa at Steenberg, or dine on sophisticated contemporary South African cuisine at Catharina's. You might also enjoy the special privileges at the golf course, or simply laze by the pool and gaze at the mountains as you sip Steenberg's signature Sauvignon Blanc Reserve. If you are in the mood for a day trip, seasonal whale watching in Hermanus is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I've stayed here twice and loved the atmosphere. I found the rooms to be clean, charming, and comfortable and the staff to be exceptionally professional. The main restaurant was closed for winter maintenance the first night I arrived, but the staff made every effort to offer to take me to a nearby restaurant or to pick up food using their shuttle. Of course, once the restaurant re-opened the next day, breakfast was great, and dinner was excellent. Also tried Bistro1682 for tapas and was impressed by the atmosphere and food/drink selection.

We were greeted with a glass of the Estates' Bubbly ,sipping it in front of a cosy crackling fire on lovely comfortable chairs and that was just the start of our lovely weekend. Our room was elegantly furnished and we looked forward to climb into the soft white linen bedding after our meal. The meal at Catharinas was out of this world and very good value for money. We had a Wonderful time at Steenberg Hotel and will definately visit them again.

Beautiful property set in a serene environment with a rich history and very friendly staff. The only thing which I thought was a bit off is that we had to pay for water - which is a bit strange for a five star hotel. But this did not put me off as I will definitely return.

The hotel is magnificent. Our building was part of the original property, built in 1682. The interior, electrical and plumbing have been recently updated so not to worry! It is beautiful inside and out, and very comfortable. Bistro Sixteen82 is a gem. Do not miss this place, even if this is all you can do at the property. Catherine's Restaurant is a bit more upscale. Both offer top notch cuisine. Make sure you try the Black Swan Sauv Blanc. Only about 30-35 minute drive from Cape Town Central & Waterfront. Make the trip. It's a beautiful drive once outside of the city.

My wife and I stayed here during our vacation in Cape Town and simply cannot say enough good things about the Steenberg Hotel and its staff. We were looking for a comfortable place to stay as we explored the Western Cape area. The Steenberg is an easy drive (yourself or Uber) to hot dining in Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, and attractions all around the False Bay area. The facilities are modern and comfortable, while still maintaining the beautiful aesthetic of Dutch Cape architecture in quiet, serene settings. STAFF From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the staff was passionate, competent, and genuinely friendly. The duty managers, porters, and other staff have a way of making you feel like family by anticipating your needs, following through, and taking opportunities to share quick stories about property. We had a personal preference to be in a more secluded room than what they first provided, the Duty Manager quickly found us an alternative that met our expectations exactly, including setting up a small sitting area for us (again, anticipating without us even asking for it. Small thing I noticed, they later swapped the table for a nicer one, again without us even asking). ROOMS Pictures online don't really do justice to the rooms. The fixtures and facilities are modern, extremely comfortable, and clean while maintaining the trim and aesthetic associated with these historical structures. We slept sooo well. Turn-down service was also excellent. GROUNDS Beautiful rolling vineyards nestled in the valley. Plenty of beautiful bird life. Lots of places to take a stroll for a change of scenery, and the staff and can shuttle you to different areas if you don't feel like walking. The Egyptian Geese (actually ducks) do love to quack, so it won't be perfect silence during the day, but it's perfectly silent at night. SPA Spectacular. My wife and I have traveled many places in the world and Steenberg's spa professionals are among the best we have experienced. RESTAURANTS The Bistro serves excellent tapas and is excellent for a chic but more casual experience. Lovely way to get introduced to their wine selection and a taste of what they can put on a plate. Catharina's is their fine dining establishment, and while I could go on for another 2000 words, I will just recommend you do the tasting menu with wine pairing. What an experience! To go further might spoil it for you. In closing, we left Steenberg with impending sense of homesickness. We love the property, the staff, and will surely return sometime in the future. We'll be coming home.
