Steenberg Hotel in Constantia, South Africa

Dating back to 1682, the Steenberg Hotel is an exquisite historic wine farm set in the foothills of South Africa's magnificent Constantia Valley. Although just 20 minutes from the center of Cape Town, this serene set of buildings - declared an official National Monument - is its own seductive world, surrounded by vineyards and an 18-hole championship golf course. The buildings have been lovingly restored and decorated traditionally with antiques in elegant 17th-century style. In your delightful guest room or suite, you will discover a wealth of treats, which may include a romantic patio with views of the vines and fairways.

Although you are close Cape Town's shops, restaurants and a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain, you may find it difficult to leave the Steenberg Hotel estate itself. You can experience the radiant energy of The Spa at Steenberg, or dine on sophisticated contemporary South African cuisine at Catharina's. You might also enjoy the special privileges at the golf course, or simply laze by the pool and gaze at the mountains as you sip Steenberg's signature Sauvignon Blanc Reserve. If you are in the mood for a day trip, seasonal whale watching in Hermanus is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

We stayed in Steenberg following our arrival in South Africa. It was a perfect place to start, so quiet, lovely gardens and well looked after. The staff, in particular Bronwyn, ensured we had everything we wanted. The wine tasting is very good, along with 1684 bistro. Catharina's was a mixed experience. It took an hour and a half from the airport due to the traffic. Once we arrived that was quickly forgotten. The hotel runs a daily shuttle bus to the Waterfront and will arrange other trips on request. We found this to be a great location and a lovely place to stay

I realise it was 6 years since I reviewed Steenberg and thus 6 yearsisince we had last been there - far too long. This time we had a one night stay in a superior room and one night a few days later in a premier room. Both were good and too be honest the superior room was plenty big enough although the private garden in the premier room was a great addition. The vineyards are large enough (and hilly enough) for a good walk before breakfast or dinner and the winery itself does a good light lunch with free wine tasting for hotel guests. We ate two nights at Catharinas restaurant which had a good selection of food well cooked. Breakfasts were also good. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. Hopefully we will not leave it 6 years to return!

We arrived in this hotel for a 3 night stay. At arrival I had terrible stomach problems due to (most probably0 some bad mussels I had eaten in Hermanus. The staff were extremely helpful to me and my wife and the service was terrific. On the one hand my wife had exquisite dinners while I was on just toast and tea. Every effort was made to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The only negative point , but that is everywhere in South Africa these days the extremely slow golfrounds.

This was my second stay. The suites are clean, well appointed, and perfectly maintained. The surrounding grounds are stunning. The staff is very friendly and caring to the point that they all know what you are doing each day and always ask how your day went. It is a professionally run operation and I would recommend a stay there as it is amazing. Hope to visit again on my next Capetown trip

This hotel has much going for it. Stunning secure location, professional and helpful staff, beautifully kept gardens. However they have one big problem and that concerns the flies. Go into breakfast and approach the buffet table and the flies are soon obvious. Quite a lot of them and they are walking over the cold cooked meats, the plate of cheese, the smoked salmon, the bread and rolls. The hotel know about them because on the buffet table are little pots with burning wicks giving off citronella type fumes. The flies though don't take any notice and continue crawling all over the food that you could soon be putting in your mouth - ugh! This worried me a lot because I thought if they don't care enough about hygiene, where you the visitor can see it, what's it like in the kitchen where you can't see it? There is no need for this. Before coming here we had stayed at another nearby luxury hotel and all their meats, cheeses and bread products on the breakfast buffet were in containers with lift-up lids. Not a fly to be seen on their food.
