Steenberg Hotel in Constantia, South Africa

Dating back to 1682, the Steenberg Hotel is an exquisite historic wine farm set in the foothills of South Africa's magnificent Constantia Valley. Although just 20 minutes from the center of Cape Town, this serene set of buildings - declared an official National Monument - is its own seductive world, surrounded by vineyards and an 18-hole championship golf course. The buildings have been lovingly restored and decorated traditionally with antiques in elegant 17th-century style. In your delightful guest room or suite, you will discover a wealth of treats, which may include a romantic patio with views of the vines and fairways.

Although you are close Cape Town's shops, restaurants and a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain, you may find it difficult to leave the Steenberg Hotel estate itself. You can experience the radiant energy of The Spa at Steenberg, or dine on sophisticated contemporary South African cuisine at Catharina's. You might also enjoy the special privileges at the golf course, or simply laze by the pool and gaze at the mountains as you sip Steenberg's signature Sauvignon Blanc Reserve. If you are in the mood for a day trip, seasonal whale watching in Hermanus is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

My wife and I stayed here during our vacation in Cape Town and simply cannot say enough good things about the Steenberg Hotel and its staff. We were looking for a comfortable place to stay as we explored the Western Cape area. The Steenberg is an easy drive (yourself or Uber) to hot dining in Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, and attractions all around the False Bay area. The facilities are modern and comfortable, while still maintaining the beautiful aesthetic of Dutch Cape architecture in quiet, serene settings. STAFF From the moment we arrived, it was clear that the staff was passionate, competent, and genuinely friendly. The duty managers, porters, and other staff have a way of making you feel like family by anticipating your needs, following through, and taking opportunities to share quick stories about property. We had a personal preference to be in a more secluded room than what they first provided, the Duty Manager quickly found us an alternative that met our expectations exactly, including setting up a small sitting area for us (again, anticipating without us even asking for it. Small thing I noticed, they later swapped the table for a nicer one, again without us even asking). ROOMS Pictures online don't really do justice to the rooms. The fixtures and facilities are modern, extremely comfortable, and clean while maintaining the trim and aesthetic associated with these historical structures. We slept sooo well. Turn-down service was also excellent. GROUNDS Beautiful rolling vineyards nestled in the valley. Plenty of beautiful bird life. Lots of places to take a stroll for a change of scenery, and the staff and can shuttle you to different areas if you don't feel like walking. The Egyptian Geese (actually ducks) do love to quack, so it won't be perfect silence during the day, but it's perfectly silent at night. SPA Spectacular. My wife and I have traveled many places in the world and Steenberg's spa professionals are among the best we have experienced. RESTAURANTS The Bistro serves excellent tapas and is excellent for a chic but more casual experience. Lovely way to get introduced to their wine selection and a taste of what they can put on a plate. Catharina's is their fine dining establishment, and while I could go on for another 2000 words, I will just recommend you do the tasting menu with wine pairing. What an experience! To go further might spoil it for you. In closing, we left Steenberg with impending sense of homesickness. We love the property, the staff, and will surely return sometime in the future. We'll be coming home.

Beautiful venue, friendly staff, total tranquillity. Decent breakfast and quiteful terrace. Services in the SPA area were excellent. A bit disappointed about dinner in the restaurant, but not enough to lower the score. There are plenty of good restaurants in the area anyways... really happy, will be back!

We've been there already the second time and from now on always try to spend there one night once we are in SA. In the moment you enter the estate and check in by a complementary glass of champagne you will start to unwind and relax. Spend the afternoon in Sternberg's own winery by a light lunch or just try one of their wines. Spend an hour at the small but beautiful pool before you get prepared for an outstanding dinner in their restaurant with great food and wines. After the night in your luxurious room (even in the smaller ones) we had a delicious breakfast before we checked out. For sure you could get great experiences like that also for less money in SA, but it is worth it. Looking forward to the next visit...

When you think of south Africa, one of the things that spring to mind are Diamonds. A Dimond has many unequaled qualities and is unique. I found a Hotel which I consider a Dimond. Unique above others, with unequaled Qualities, The Steenberg Hotel. After a nine-hour flight, (been tried and a little grumpy), I was greeted by the hotel staff, shown into a lounge area with a big open fire ablaze, presented with a glass of sparkling wine (I understand which is produced on the Estate) to which, the checking in procedure was conducted in a most informal and relaxed manor, not to mention a superb décor. Once formalities were done (which had lightened my mood to almost mellow) I was escorted to my room, whereby I was presented a large spacious, impeccably decorated space, giving way to a homely and relaxed feeling. All the usual amenities are there so no need to ask for anything. This also includes an international adaptor plug, (nice touch), as yes I do carry one with me, however mine did fit. The bathroom, also well-appointed and spacious, however two comments; the size of the rain shower head is so large, that, warning girls, you are going to get your hair wet even if you do not want this to happen and secondly while the lighting sconces either side of the mirror is a nice decorative touch, these do throw a shadow over the mirror; so again, for the girls, it would be difficult to deal with your, make up. Breakfast and Dinner in Catharina’s Restaurant is fantastic. The warm friendly atmosphere form the staff along with great food makes this restaurant a great place to start your day or wind down in the evening. Be assured that Rob and his team will look after you, not forgetting to mention, John the Sommelier, who will provide you with his extensive knowledge regarding the wine list. Push him, and he will surprise you with a recommended bottle which secretly he keeps out back, just for those occasions, or for a person who requires something very special. Overall, I can say, the Steenberg Hotel is a gem. Quietly sophisticated, outstanding staff, service and amenities and should be on your list of Hotels to stay in, whilst in Cape Town.

Last night I stayed at the Steenberg Hotel and was pampered beyond description - good pampering with anticipating service and a professional but not a pretentious welcome. This morning the weather was diabolical and my breakfast was served in front of the fire. As my meetings were cancelled, I asked if I could stay till checkout. The spa picked up on my "spare" time and offered the perfect substitute - a deep tissue massage. Zubeida was fantastic and took care of a knot that no one else could. I'll be back with my wife for the entire experience again. Oh, the golf course has renovated and is worth a day out!
