Steenberg Hotel in Constantia, South Africa

Dating back to 1682, the Steenberg Hotel is an exquisite historic wine farm set in the foothills of South Africa's magnificent Constantia Valley. Although just 20 minutes from the center of Cape Town, this serene set of buildings - declared an official National Monument - is its own seductive world, surrounded by vineyards and an 18-hole championship golf course. The buildings have been lovingly restored and decorated traditionally with antiques in elegant 17th-century style. In your delightful guest room or suite, you will discover a wealth of treats, which may include a romantic patio with views of the vines and fairways.

Although you are close Cape Town's shops, restaurants and a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain, you may find it difficult to leave the Steenberg Hotel estate itself. You can experience the radiant energy of The Spa at Steenberg, or dine on sophisticated contemporary South African cuisine at Catharina's. You might also enjoy the special privileges at the golf course, or simply laze by the pool and gaze at the mountains as you sip Steenberg's signature Sauvignon Blanc Reserve. If you are in the mood for a day trip, seasonal whale watching in Hermanus is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

stayed here for 3 nights before going back home and found this place to be our best choice of a hotel during our 2 week Western Cape trip. A quiet place in a lovely wine yard with very nice gardens. Exceptional friendly and helpful staff, spacious room, excellent restaurant, great wines and a perfect golf course, not to far from downtown Capetown. Need to go there again!

We stayed here for 1 night as a birthday celebration and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The staff were professional and lovely and the room was beautifully appointed. Only one comment to make here - there is a stunning bath which I asked if it was ok to use due to the water crisis in Cape Town. The response I recieved was "Yes, madam, we pay for the water, so please use it" which wasn't particularly comforting - doesn't matter how much is paid, when there's none left, there's none left! We recieved a turn down service with a small dessert platter, which was a lovely touch. Breakfast at the restaurant was good - the hot breakfast was delicious albeit the service was slow (we weren't in a rush though). The buffet was not great, pineapple was black in the middle and inedible. Complimentary wine tasting was wonderful! Beautiful grounds as well, only wish we could have stayed longer!

Nestled between vineyards and a golf course with beautiful views of the mountains behind it. This is a personal boutiquey hotel with excellent service. The grounds are beautiful with big trees and a pool area with a bar. Rooms: I stayed in a standard room. It had tea/coffee making facilities and bar fridge. A lovely modern bathroom with a bath and separate shower. Room service was readily available. It was incredibly peaceful! Breakfasts are delicious . There are two restaurants. Catherina's is the more formal one with amazing food and exceptional service. Steenburg 1682 has tapas and wine tasting. It is a lovely venue however I find their menu limited with a very cheese based vegetarian menu. That being said, carnivores will have no problems! The hotel has a wonderful Spa. It is a haven of relaxation with lovely staff. I had excellent massages as well as manicures and pedicures. I will definitely be visiting Steenburg Hotel again.

Just oust side Cape Town in a Vineyard, with the Mountains as a backdrop. Golf on the doorstep. This small hotels offers very high standard facilities and matching staff , with a very positive and helpful approach. Some internet issues while we visited, but they were working on a solution. An excellent Bistro at the Cellar door is not to be missed and the shuttle service means the Harbour side is easily accessible.

I stayed at Steenberg in late April 2017 for one night, and thoroughly enjoyed my time. The hotel is relatively small, so service is personalized and attentive from the get-go. Very easy check-in process with a brief orientation of the hotel to follow. The property is a beautifully renovated old Cape Dutch farmstead. As such, it retains the charming character of the original buildings and gardens, while still offering all the mod cons that one would expect from a five star establishment. It's a tranquil, peaceful place, without any of the entertainment and distractions offered by more mainstream hotels. Probably best suited to singles looking for a romantic break or more mature travelers, rather than families with small kids. The two restaurants on the property, Caterina's and Bistro 1682, are both good. Especially Bistro 1682. Breakfast is served at Caterina's, and it was good, but not exceptional. However, I had dinner at Bistro 1682, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. A very enticing selection of small plates is on offer, and everything I had was superb. Service was top drawer as well. Beautiful setting to boot. It's right next to the Steenberg Estate wine tasting center, which is in and of itself, a very inviting and comfortable space. All hotel guests are offered a free wine tasting, and it's well worth it. Steenberg makes some excellent wines, and their whites especially are outstanding. And their champagne (and yes, I know it's not French and we're not supposed to use that word) rivals the best the French have to offer. I have only one bugbear, and that's the weird electronic room key one is issued. Maybe it was me, but I just could not get it to work properly. Opening my room door inevitably involved a trip to reception, or an irritating, fumbling process of trial and error until my door yielded. Other than that, I would highly recommend the hotel.
