We were never more delighted to check out of a "5 Star" Hotel. It all started with the brisk unfriendly check in where she was more worried about up-selling us €12 breakfast then directing us properly to our room or maybe even giving us an over view of the facilities. There’s cars strewn everywhere as the parking is dire. The paths you have to walk along aren’t much better and are very poorly lit ...or covered in cars. I was expecting a bit of a Christmas wonderland too but there was no lighting or decorations outside either. The whole hotel is FREEZING. The journey to our room was like trekking through Siberia. The corridors are absolute Baltic, never have I had to wear a coat from my room to an in house restaurant before. The room was poor, for a supposed 5 star. The bathroom had the most foul smell in it, we thought something was dead. The make-up mirror didn't work. The toiletries in boxes were battered and dog-eared. There was an information card on the bedside locker explaining how to operate the electric curtains, which didn't work. The lamps were lopsided and it wasn't by design. The side lockers were missing the glass table top on one side. The tea/coffee making area had a European 2 pin socket but the kettle was a 3 pin plug so we had to heat water on the floor - not very safe. You couldn't lock the bedroom door either - the list is endless. I didn't have a list like this leaving the last 5 star hotel. To add, it was my 30th Birthday and my aunt arranged for prosecco and strawberries to be left in the room however only the prosecco arrived so she had to call and complain. The only enjoyable part, was one evening spent in Knights bar, where Kaan and Peter’s professionalism, friendliness and great cocktail making abilities managed to put a smile on our faces. We woke up the morning of our departure only delighted to leave. This is more like a 3.5/4 star hotel charging 5 star prices. Anyone looking for a real 5 star experience should take their money to Powerscourt or the Europe.

For years my cousin and I have wanted to stay here. So for her birthday we treated ourselves to Castlemartyr. It was a nice stay, but honestly for the money, it didn't live up to our expectations. Firstly the hotel was freezing. Our room in the new wing -cold. The long corridors -absolutely baltic. We were moved -hassle free, due to electric curtains not working. Our dinner reservation was for the wrong restaurant, but we were accommodated -again hassle free. Staff seemed overwhelmingly under pressure all of the time... the Grounds are beautiful and only a few minutes drive from the beach -which really made it for me. Make what you will of this review...

Ok. Got a dog recently and Castlemartyr is Dog friendly so decided to combine SPA trip with mum and experiment weekend with dog. 1. Food was poor and repeatedly cold. Nothing to do with dog. 2. Had spa trip booked for Friday. It was good, went to use steam rooms , sauna the next day and was told that we did not have access to facilities as we had not booked a treatment. Even though we were guests. Got access when started to get stroppy. Nothing to do with dog. 3. Room was not turned over on day 2. expect this to be basic. Complained to staff at 3:00pm. Asked if it had anything to do with dogs. Was told it was not, was told it would be done. After 8:00 pm returning from dinner. Room was not refreshed. Complained. Was told it was because of dogs. Asked for fresh water, towels and coffe. Got water and towels. So I’m in a supposedly 5 star hotel, I complain twice about something I would expect in a 2 star hotel and I’m struggling to get it responded to. Staff in fairness are lovey, even if I bring dogs I still expect basics. Arrange with me when dogs will be out of room to turn over or at least advise me that room will not be refreshed because of dogs. Update : Manager requested to speak with me on departure .. took feedback and I believe will respond to it. So thumbs up for customer service. I think being dog friendly is excellent and really forward looking, they just need to think through how to incorporate with five star standards .. i.e. getting your room refreshed.

We had a nice stay ona db&b package. The room was lovely, well appointed, large separate dressing room howeve, a few small things like some bulbs were blown, the interactive tv system didn't work you could watch tv but not listen to music. Dinner in the bell tower was nice. However, breakfast let the place down. The eggs Benedict has to be returned, the bagle was stale, it was replaced by a full irish but it wasn't great egg was solid but it was ordered over easy it seemed to have been precooked. Bar service also room for improvement, no table service you have to go up to order drinks, and we had to pull and drag chairs to be able to sit together no help from the staff. This wasn't my first time staying but I didnt feel the service was 5 stars on this visit.
