Fabulous hotel. We went for a special occasion and stayed in a suite which was amazing. Really spacious and worth the extra money. Food was really good and nice bar area for drinks

I'd Turn Back If I Were You

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

I stayed in the Castlemartyr for my birthday on Thursday 16th October. The suite was spacious and beautiful thankfully. Having stayed in the hotel a few times in the past, and each time we stayed we adored our stay however, this occasion was my last time staying at the hotel. The reception female staff are terrible, not welcoming or friendly and they all looked so unhappy to be there. Lars was very obvious looking for a tip to carry a small handbag to our room (we didn't want or ask him to do this, the unhappy receptionist asked Lars when we checked in) on checkout Lars didn't assist with our bag to the taxi probably because he didn't get any tip on the first occasion. On checkout when I asked the unhappy receptionist to book us a cab she directed me towards Lars who asked me to leave the reception area to come out by the cold front door to fill out some silly form in order to get a cab. On checkout the unhappy receptionist asked my sister what room were we staying in after she being handed the card holder with the room cards and room number on it. Waste of time and we were never asked by the unhappy receptionist if we enjoyed our stay, a nice welcoming friendly receptionist of a 2 star hotel would ask this. I was very disappointed that the Bell Tower Restaurant no longer serves breakfast and the Canopy bar is awful, avoid. The Bell Towers new decor is absolutely awful. The decor in the Canopy bar is terrible also and it drags the hotel down. Elaine in the Canopy restaurant was lovely to deal with as was Coran and Yawerk in Knights Bar. No choice for gluten free food in the awful Canopy Bar we were stuck with cheese toasted sandwiches on my Birthday after a very long wait. Other customers were complaining of the long wait also. Don't sit by the piano in the Canopy bar as it's freezing in that area. The new reception area is very modern and not in keeping with the old reception area in the Manor House which in my opinion is the Castlemartyr, the new Reception area is very bland, boring, corporate and modern with QR codes. Myself and my sister Olga are well used to staying in Magnificent 5 star hotels around the world, hotels that deserve their 5 star rating to name a few of them such as The K Club, Staffan Co Kildare, The Hayfield Manor, The Cliff House, The Monte Carlo, The Westbury, The Hotel Du Cap Antibes, France, The Winter Palace Hotel, Luxor Egypt and the Amazing Hotel Negresco Nice France. To the Guest Relations Manager Unless you were present for our trip (and you obviously were not) please do not reply to my review as this wouldn't be appropriate or professional to do so as this was our genuine experience and opinion of our recent stay. Sloppy service can not be defended. On reading the bad reviews now that the hotel is getting and I can understand why (wish I had read them before we arrived as we would have cancelled our stay) I hope that my review might make you pause and think before you book the Castlemartyr.

Never returning!!

I stayed in the Castlemartyr for my sister's birthday and we were so looking forward to our stay. We had stayed there a few times in the past but I wasn't aware of how much the hotel has changed. Firstly reception has moved from where it used to be, in the beautiful Manor House. It is now further down by the carpark and how modern and totally unappealing it is. It is not what was once a 5 star experience on checking in. The reception staff are awful, not friendly, attentive or nice to deal with. Lars the concierge helped bring a bag to our room on arrival and before he left the room he had looked at my hand a few times possibly expecting a tip!! When leaving the hotel after checkout he was there again and just watched while I carried the same bag into a taxi. Don't be so obvious about it!! We did get a beautiful room, number 122 which I highly recommend as it had amazing space and beautiful decor. However breakfast isn't served in the beautiful Bell Tower anymore which was so stunning. The bell tower now only caters a few evenings a week to some sort of Michelin menu. The decor in the Bell Tower is awful now, again modernised like the new reception area. I recall in the past checking in to the beautiful reception area in the Manor House and looking forward the next morning to a beautiful breakfast in the Bell Tower. The hotel has been modernised to such a degree that I no longer recognise it. The Canopy restaurant is awful because it's super modern and is not in keeping with what was the original beautiful Castlemartyr Hotel. If you have any dietary requirements there are such little options. We were very grateful to get a toasted cheese sandwich though for dinner after such a long wait. The breakfast room is one of the most boring rooms I have ever spent time in. The hotel is now like 2 completely different hotels all in one and it feels very strange. It was a pleasure to spend some time in Knights Bar where you can no longer eat food but can still enjoy a drink there but for how long more before that is gone as well. Some of the staff were fabulous and I have to mention Coran and Jarek in Knights Bar and Elaine in the canopy, they have amazing customer service. I wish I could say the same about Paul, the accomodation manager, not friendly or approachable!! Unfortunately myself and my sister won't be returning to the hotel. It is such a shame as it really was a stunning old classical hotel that celebrated its past. Now it is jumping head on into the future of blandness, futuristic and QR codes. Be prepared if you want the concierge to order you a taxi as you will have to fill out some form!! I really do wish the hotel a lot of luck as I used to love it but it will need all the luck in the world continuing the way it is!!

Faultless

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

Absolutely the best place I have ever stayed in Ireland , from the check-in to checkout - faultless in every aspect. The hotel room was huge, quality of the linen, pillows, etc was exceptional - Blackout curtains meant a lie in, bonus for me. Breakfast was perfectly cooked and presented , all staff from check in to check out were friendly, polite and very professional. I shall return !

Spectacular rooms and grounds.

Our group of 2 couples recently traveled to Ireland and Scotland for about 20 days. As part of our trip, we based at The Castlemartyr Resort in Castlemartyr, Ireland. Our reason for staying was we wanted to explore vis day trips to Cohb, Cork and other surrounding areas. I must say, after being a world traveler for over 50 years, the rooms, and their first class appointments, coupled with the, absolutely, stunningly beautiful (large) surrounding grounds that the resort sits upon, are among the top 5 that we have visited in all of our years of travels. We had perfect, Autumn weather (slightly chilly), with just a passing shower or two. Our room was a small suite, but it was not small. The staff were excellent, and friendly. I really enjoyed their breakfast as well. We did not get a chance to try their 2 Star Michelin Restaurant, but did enjoy their bar and grill. I would rate the food as really good, 4 stars. Service was somewhat slow in their higher-class restaurant our 1st evening. They could do better-we had trouble getting the attention of our waiter to refill our water glasses, etc. But, that was our only knock on our stay...nothing big, just surprised. We hope to return to the Castlemartyr-We thought for the price of our suite was very fair. Loved Ireland, too!
