Our stay here was courtesy of our wonderful kids who gave us a 2 night B&B and evening meal in Celebration of our 30 years of Wedded Bliss !! We had dropped the hint at our desire to stay here so while it was a lovely surprise we had somewhat guided their gift idea. We are by no means 5 star regulars, but as you can see by my profile I've stayed in many 5 star venues all over the globe courtesy of my employers (others and self currently!). I look for a comfortable, easy stay, in a good location and irrespective if that's a 2 star or 7 star venue, if I feel it meets that criteria I'll go for it. On paper Castlemartyr has so much going for it, and in the lead up to our stay we even booked an extra night for ourselves to let us have that full pampered 5 star experience. What we got was good, but was it worth the money the kids and we paid for it ? absolutely not. What aspects were 5 star ? The Room, it was beautiful with excellent bathroom and showers, gorgeous and truly deserving of it's rating. The Food. We ate in the Bell Tower, and Franchini's and the Golf Club Pod and particularly Bell Tower meal was spectacular, let down slightly by a way over priced very ordinary 'House' white wine at €37. The Staff from the Spa, Bar, Restaurants, Housekeeping and Concierge were excellent, they were friendly without being gushing and displayed a true sense of welcome to the customer and eagerness to please. The location is also beautiful within the 18 hole golf course and a joy to ramble through the wooded walk and grounds. The Spa facilities are excellent, I availed of a treatment which was thoroughly professional and had a incredible relaxing effect. What aspects were not 5 Star ? The changing rooms of the swimming pool, and steam room/saunas were really cramped and grubby with slippy floors and no cleaning personnel in attendance, 5 star ? I have seen rural GAA (Irish Sport) dressing rooms in better condition. Guest services i.e Reservation / Check Out, Our nice voucher included an evening meal (Bell Tower) but on check out we were informed it didn't (clearly it did!!) to and fro ensued and in the wind up 'The customer is always right' criteria was applied and my wife was given the benefit of the doubt as it were.( On our drive home we were phoned by the Hotel to apologise that we had been correct (shock !!!) and sorry for any embarrassment caused.) Our third 'extra' night seemed to completely send reservation and reception into melt down, I had called to book Dinners in advance of our stay (as advised by Hotel) during that call I explained that we were actually staying an extra night to our voucher, and that this night had been also booked and paid for in advance. On check in we again pointed this out and we duly got our room for the 3 nights. We were asked on the morning of our third day were we checking out ? I explained yet again the decision to stay an extra night, then our room was not cleaned on that third day until 6:15pm turndown service (despite 2 phone calls to reception at various times during the day) Reservation Reception and Housekeeping were not communicating obviously. The Pod Decor. I understand this is the golf club bar / restaurant but if it's under the umbrella of Castlemartyr's 5 star resort then the decor need major revamping, old tired grubby carpet with really fast food joint decor that lets it down big time, also would be great if the TV's satellite signal worked for the full duration of a game. Castlemartyr needs to knuckle down on the basics or that 5 star rating will slip away before their eyes.

The new added wing is beautiful and clean... the original wing where the restaurants and the lobby are look nothing like the pictures. It's ran down old and dirty. We got in late, and wanted to go and have dinner, there is only two restaurants at the resort and they were both booked. Very disappointing. Next morning we went to breakfast there was a 20 min wait. (Which is fine) but after we sat down no one can to take our order for 20 min. We ordered our food, and it took 30 min for it to come out. And the food was horrible. Will never go back.. very disappointed.

Check in was cold and unfriendly and although quiet we were not informed of directions to rooms which were a long long way from reception, dining or spa so advance warning ask for a room close to reception or dining areas in advance or prepare for a long long walk. Had a junior suite which was very spacious and nicely appointed but a little dated and scruffy in area with carpets and paint work. Dinner and breakfast was excellent, dining room staff efficient and friendly. Golf course was beautiful with a well equipped Shop and clubhouse. Good gym and pool. Prebooking of spa a necessity here. Terrific walking routes and lovely village.

This place is truly worth a visit. The guest rooms are completely kitted out, with luxe bathtub, giant walk-in shower, large dressing room and incredibly comfortable beds. The grounds include horses, several beautiful mapped walks, and an outstanding golf course. The hotel itself has several restaurant options, but my favorite room is the main bar, Terrifically high ceilings, elegant, yet comfortable furnishing, warm lighting and beautiful artwork. All of the bartenders we met were outstanding, especially Mike, who could make any cocktail order thrown his way. A must-visit if you are in east Cork, and a must-stay if you have the time.

I had a wonderful stay (girls weekend) recently in the hotel. The breakfast and service was great. The definite highlight was the spa and the afternoon tea service. It was a perfect stay. Be sure to book any treatment and reservation in advance, as we met a number of people who couldn't get a late booking.
