The staff at Elounda suites are fantastic, nothing is to much trouble for them. A special note to Anna who was very helpful and always had a smile and remembered you by name. The room was very clean and spacious, and had a lovely balcony overlooking the pool area. Our luggage was carried to our room and a welcome note along with a bottle of wine, a bowl of fruit a bottle of water was left for us. The choice of food at breakfast is ‘wow’

We had a wonderful holiday at this lovely hotel. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we felt special. The staff are so welcoming and can’t do enough for you. We had a bungalow with pool. It really felt like our little home rather than a hotel room. The housekeeping staff are the best we’ve experienced. They are meticulous when cleaning the room. Although not wheelchair friendly the hotel is very disabled friendly. Every time we left the room a car was sent down to take us up to reception, always with a smile. The hotel is hilly with lots of steps. The beach was so beautiful and was only a couple of minutes walk from our bungalow (room 46). We will definitely be back!

I know them all - the beautiful hotels in Greece - but there a very few, which can compete with Elounda Mare. A place like in Garden Eden - wherever you look only beauty and peace- water like turquoise chrystal - a huge garden full of flowers, blooming bushes and olive trees- butterflies, bees and swallows... Every place is crearted with great taste and real Greek feeling....Our bungalow with pool and a great view to sea and Sitia Mountains was heaven on earth for us and the smiling friendly staff made us feel like kings... We look foreward to come back....

After so many visits it becomes difficult to write a review that yet again does it justice and which doesn’t simply repeat what I’ve said so many times before: about the beautiful buildings in the Cretan style of grey and apricot stone; about the staggering views from the main building down and across the bright blue sea of the bay and the cliffs the other side of the bay which turn from grey to pink in the setting sun; about the handsome rooms immaculately kept by the friendly smiling maids; about the beautiful pool and elegantly laid out grounds meandering along above the sea to the private sandy beach with the beach boy who always remembers us! So I won’t repeat myself and tell you again about the welcome we receive as we arrive, from the grooms who carry our cases, the beaming smiles and affectionate hugs of the reception staff (special mention would have to be made of Katerina and Eleni); a cold glass of something fizzy and a wave from Dimitris behind the bar; and a huge ‘welcome back’ from the manager Harry who keeps this hotel running like clockwork in the most calm and efficient way. Nor will I need to mention the excellent breakfasts overlooking the hotel grounds and the dazzling sea below. As I don’t need to write all that again I shall have room to talk about this year’s visit! I have written elsewhere that our first time here was just after our Golden Wedding Day and that we loved it so much that we have returned again and again until ten years later when we have celebrated our Diamond Wedding Anniversary this year. A milestone in every possible way, and a delight to be able to come back to this special place once more! A few things were different this year: following a hip operation I was unable to walk very far and the kind and so-caring staff insisted on taking us by buggy round by road to a private door right above the beach from where I could get down on to the sand. Another new experience was to eat dinner at the Old Mill restaurant, a real treat and the most delicious meal imaginable, real fine dining as you’d expect from a Relais & Chateaux hotel and beautifully presented by the friendly and helpful staff. During our first years here we toured the island visiting many of the Minoan and ancient palaces and ruins; we saw exquisite monasteries with heart-breaking histories of violence against oppressors; and we drove up into the mountains for fantastic views and colourful pink and white oleanders along the way. Now ten years later we are slowing down and view our holiday here as an opportunity to visit our old friends, both at the hotel and down in the port of Elounda in the tavernas along the water. Our constant surprise is that everyone always seems to be as pleased to see us as we are to see them and our hope is that we shall continue to be fit enough to add more years of visits to this lovely place.

This is the first time of my life when being on vacation (not mentioning staying in a five start hotel) when I was counting days to go home. If you are kind of a person who like showing off your wealth, throwing your money here and there, boasting to your friend that you spent a fortune on your vacation, paying three- four times the amount for the services and food, which are not worth it, then this place is for you. I am definitely not this kind of person, just as the most of the people, as such, would like to give this reference to those people who are still playing their trip to Elounda and searching for a place to stay. Hotel management, please, do not write me any feedback, as I already know what it will be, reviewing your feedbacks to other people's comments, always with a but on the critics, always with a reason for the gaps and misses and NO IMPROVEMENT MADE. These people should step of this reservation called Mare Hotel, go to Elounda and learn from the local tavernas how to really be hospitable, how to cook really good food and how much it should cost. They should take a lesson of doing their job well and satisfying their guests from their junior staff, those who really work hard cleaning the hotel keeping us happy. so we go: - everything is so artificial and overpriced; - their grid for the gusts money has not limit; - the width of their smile (reception people and those who deal with the guests) depends on how glamour or wealthy you look and it disappears quickly when they realize you are not willing to leave a fortune there, when you indicate them at their gaps and misses and ask questions they are not able to answer; a guest relations lady was raising her voice at me, demonstrating extreme irritation and eventually called me rude, as she was not able to answer any of my questions, trying to sell me the most expensive entertainments, despite my clear statement that this is not what I need; - to dine there be ready to pay over 100 EUROs, a glass of juice costs as much as a big bowl of salad or an appetizer in a Taverna at Elounda, the food quality is just average and the potions are very small, I really wonder who gave them all these awards they write about at their site; - breakfast is a 3-start hotel breakfast (see my photos), same every day; - garbage on the beach and in the water (they seemed never heard about a need to pick it up with the nets from the sea), tired and dirty sunbed mats (see my photos); - very hard an uncomfortable mattresses and pillows, which made me constantly waking up (other people already wrote about it, but they don't mind); - nosy air-conditioning that blew strait into the bed )too hot without it, too cold with it on); - the size of the room I was staying is defiantly not a 5-strat hotel standard, very small; - no iron and ironing board in the room; - besides a few wine glasses and 2 tiny coffee cups no other tableware; - no teapot and no tea cups in the room (despite that most of their guest are from UK and Russia and other guests comments that it would be good to have them in the room); - no desk; I had a particular request to have a desk in my room as I had to work a few hours daily, and it was communicate to the hotel a few days before my arrival. However, there was no desk when I arrived, and when I pointed that out, the Hotel woman who escorted me to the room got very irritated about my comment. They brought me a table on the next day that looked like a dining table form the kitchen, with no excuses; - no control over the sunbeds - some people leave their towels on them for the whole stay period, and nobody seems to mind (photo attached). Oh, yes, of cause there are positive things about this place too, which despite everything I did enjoy: free air and free sea, but who knows if next season they do not start charging for them, too...
