Staying in a Relais&Chateaux is always a good idea... The beach, even if little, is fantastic with great facilities and perfect staff. Swimming pools are also great even if you can feel they are a little outdated. The structure is huge and it can be improve.. Rooms are spacious but they maybe need a little refurbishment since cost per night is not low..

Ticked all the boxes for us - high standard, spacious room, attentive and unobtrusive service, good beach/bay, watersports, quiet, great breakfast choice, easy reach of town with good selection of restaurants, etc. Will gladly return.

I stayed here with my wife for 10 days in September/October 2016 on a half-board basis. Let’s start with the positives, of which there are many. The hotel’s staff are delightful, helpful, welcoming, obliging, professional and everything you would wish for. That applies to all levels of staff: management, reception, waiting, housekeeping, gardening and everybody else at the hotel. Plenty of smiles here! The villa/cottage in which we stayed was kept spotlessly clean and benefited from effective air conditionong and a small private pool that was regularly maintained. The view from the pool terrace was lovely and the garden was private and not overlooked. The villa was located some 200m from the main building in a very quiet and peaceful area of the hotel’s extensive, and beautifully maintained, grounds. Thus it was a pleasant stroll over to the main hotel building in the morning to find breakfast. A rather shorter stroll in the other direction led one to the small, but immaculate, private beach, which was well furnished with umbrellas and sunbeds. Altogether a more than acceptable environment in which to pass some leisure time. Breakfast was served in the Deck restaurant and was a comprehensive cold buffet selection that would satisfy, I imagine, guests of any of the many nationalities represented. In addition, there was the option to have hot food cooked to order. All very satisfactory and a very good start to each day. The Deck is also the restaurant in which half-board guests dined in the evening unless they took the option to take their evening meal in one of the other restaurants in the complex – the Old Mill for example – being given a credit of €30 per person to offset against the bill. Actually, we found the regular half-board menu very adequate – a potential 5 courses each evening: soup, starter, salad, main and dessert - and of good standard. Tasty, nicely-presented food, with enough choice on the menu, which changed every day. We should also mention out regular waiter, George, who as well as being efficient and friendly was also a mine of interesting information about the local area, Crete, Cretan customs and so forth. Thanks, George! I hope that what I have written above conveys the impression of a hotel/resort that is generally of excellent quality, is well-run, is relaxing, is well-maintained and is somewhere I would be pleased to visit again – for I would. But there ARE a couple of BUTS! The first relates to the Old Mill restaurant. It has a lovely ambience, delightful staff and a good menu. It is also, in my opinion, over-priced. Two starters, two main courses, one dessert, a bottle of sparkling water, a bottle of local Cretan red wine and a coffee: total price €179 (less €60 credit from the Deck). I live in an expensive part of England – not far from London – and I would expect better value at home. The second BUT relates to the room. It had a minibar with the usual inflated prices. As always, I didn’t use that. It also had one of those Nespresso machines that brews coffee from a plastic capsule, but no tea-making facilities. This was something of a ‘first’ for me. I’ve stayed in countless hotels all over the place and I can’t recall staying in one, however modest, that doesn’t provide complimentary tea, coffee and milk. Not so the Elounda Mare. No tea bags, no milk, and I discovered halfway through my stay that coffee capsules were being charged to my account at €2.80 each. Really, Elounda Mare? €2.80 for a capsule that you should be able to buy in bulk for €0.30 to €0.40 maximum? Is that the way to keep your customers happy? Total policy rethink required, I suggest, if you don’t want your guests to be irritated!

An hotel I would recommend to anyone who is seeking a quiet relaxed ambiance, in extremely well maintained and beautiful surroundings. We stayed for 2 weeks from late September and although the hotel was well occupied there was never any sense of business or crowding even on the small sandy beach in the superb weather we enjoyed. The staff are exceptional, probably the best we have ever encountered in a resort hotel. The mare is large enough to have excellent facilities, but small enough to really care. It is not surprising that many guests return
