About the Hotel

Voted the Best Hotel in South America by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Belmond Hotel Monasterio deserves every accolade that comes its way. Built in the 16th century as a monastery on Inca foundations, this cloistered compound is located amid the historic splendor of Cusco, Peru. Most notably, the hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu. Much of the original architecture of Belmond Hotel Monasterio remains intact, paying homage to its original seminarian occupants. In keeping with its intended purpose, the rooms and suites feature a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, with a gallery of religious art gracing the walls. Because of the high elevation, 11,000 feet above sea level, many of the rooms are equipped with an oxygen supplementation system for your added comfort.

Reviews for Belmond Hotel Monasterio

Best Hotel in Cusco

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 7 hours ago

Our group of 11 women stayed at Belmond Monasterio in Cusco for several days before beginning our trek on the Inca Trail, and it was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, every detail reflected the level of service and hospitality that Belmond is known for. The staff anticipated our needs before we even had to ask, making us feel genuinely welcomed and cared for throughout our stay. The property itself is stunning. The historic monastery architecture, beautiful courtyard, elegant sitting areas, cozy bar, and outstanding restaurants created an atmosphere that was both luxurious and authentically Cusqueñan. Every corner of the hotel felt special, and after busy days exploring the region, it was the perfect place to relax and recharge. The food was consistently excellent, from breakfast to dinner, and our group loved gathering in the courtyard and common areas to share stories and enjoy the ambiance. The service was warm, attentive, and personal—every interaction felt genuine. What truly impressed us was the seamless experience surrounding our trek. After four unforgettable days hiking the Inca Trail and returning to Cusco aboard the incredible Hiram Bingham train, we arrived back at the hotel late in the evening to find our luggage already waiting in our rooms. It was a small detail that perfectly demonstrated the thoughtfulness and coordination behind every aspect of our stay. Belmond Monasterio was more than just a hotel—it became part of our Peru experience. For anyone visiting Cusco, whether before or after Machu Picchu, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Our entire group left feeling grateful, pampered, and eager to return someday.

Comfy quiet luxury :)))

The best hotel we stayed in on our Peru trip. The stand out was the giant elaborate breakfast buffet accompanied by soothing monk music. Lol. The hotel architecture is beautiful. The beds. Sheets and pillows very comfortable. Special turn down chocolates. Plenty of purified water bottles delivered to our room everyday and the room was large, quiet and peaceful. The furniture and decor is a little out of 1990 but that’s not really a complaint just an observation. The concierge the front desk staff and breakfast staff super friendly and helpful. Although when we asked one desk staff member where’s the best ice cream in town he said McDonald’s. Haha really? Not the best answer so we ended up googling it. This hotel is 2 blocks from the cathedral and is perfect location to everything in old town. Enjoy ! It’s a nice place!

A superb hotel in a historical city

The Monasterio was a magnificent hotel to stay in. In a renovated Monastery, it is both beautiful and maintains the charm of a monastery with modern amenities. The food is delicious and the staff is extremely knowledgeable and efficient.

Hotel Monasterio in Cusco is truly world-class. Cusco is about 11,000 feet in altitude, but they offer oxygen supplement in rooms. Everything is superb. The manager invited us to a special cocktail party on one night, very gracious.

My daughter and I enjoyed our trip to Peru immensely. We stayed at the Hotel Monasterio in Cusco and found it to be superb. We had a magnificent suite, the staff was perfect and the chef sent us a wonderful surprise birthday cake to our room.

We visited Peru and the entire trip was spectacular. Orient-Express hotels provided exceptional service and world-class accommodations. We stayed at the Miraflores Park Hotel, Hotel Monasterio, and Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. All three hotels had beautiful rooms, outstanding restaurants, and a helpful friendly English-speaking staff. From now on, Orient-Express will be at the top of my list for worldwide travel.
