Belmond Hotel Monasterio in Cusco, Peru

Voted the Best Hotel in South America by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Belmond Hotel Monasterio deserves every accolade that comes its way. Built in the 16th century as a monastery on Inca foundations, this cloistered compound is located amid the historic splendor of Cusco, Peru. Most notably, the hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu. Much of the original architecture of Belmond Hotel Monasterio remains intact, paying homage to its original seminarian occupants. In keeping with its intended purpose, the rooms and suites feature a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, with a gallery of religious art gracing the walls. Because of the high elevation, 11,000 feet above sea level, many of the rooms are equipped with an oxygen supplementation system for your added comfort.

Discover each room, hallway, and passage at the hotel, where every undiscovered nook seems to hold legendary secrets. Abutting the main square and courtyard is Illariy Restaurant, a dining retreat adorned with original paintings and art that serves distinctive Peruvian and international cuisine. Morning meals are taken in El Tupay Restaurant, and mixologists at the Lobby Bar are skilled at creating refreshing libations with the shake of a wrist. And if you are in the mood for a more private experience, simply ring for room service round-the-clock. Just a few blocks from Cusco's central square with the cathedral and many prominent museums, Belmond Hotel Monasterio provides an idyllic place to discover everything the region has to offer.

As a special treat to ourselves, we booked the Belmond Monasterio for two nights during our Peru holiday June 2017. It sounded a lovely hotel from my enquiries and I wasn't disappointed, the building is beautiful and the bedrooms were lovely, quite luxurious. We had an included breakfast which we found to be plentiful with included hot options and a cold buffet. We only had one evening meal within its restaurant as it's quite expensive. The building is on one side of a small market type square which includes a couple of shops, cafe and restaurant but it's only a five minute walk to the historic centre of Cuzco which unfortunately we didn't have time to visit ourselves as we were booked on various excursions, but it looked amazing and I only wish we could have had more time to visit it properly.

This service here has been 5 star all around. The rooms have fantastic beds with the best quality linens and pillows. We were greeted and checked in and asked to make any requests for our stay. The gardens are beautiful, rooms very well appointed and everything is top notch. The location could not be better. Tonight we decided to have dinner and opera in the hotel. Again, the pianist and flautist were terrific and the two opera singers had exceptionally beautiful and easy voices. They sang a wide variety of arias during the dinner. The food again was delicious. I'd recommend the trout ceviche as the best I've had. Desert and Andian mint tea was perfect. The servers again were perfect and the ambiance romantic. It felt like the type of dinner that only royalty could experience a hundred years ago. Having eaten at many Michelin three star restaurants across Europe and the US, this fits in with the best. We were hoping for something special but the hotel and restaurant exceeded our expectations.

We have been in two hotels in Cusco. Monasterio has an excellent location, impressive patios and decor besides a delicious breakfast buffet. Interior capela worth the visit. Downsides: too small rooms with old facilities.

Belmond Hotel Monasterio in Cusco was one of the best hotels I've stayed in in the world. It is perfectly located. The rooms are well appointed and spacious. The grounds are a work of art. And the breakfast is top notch. Perhaps the best thing though, is the service. It's easily on par with any of The Four Seasons I've stayed in throughout the world. It's personalized and tailored to your needs. It makes you feel welcome and taken care of at every turn. And it creates a sense of unparalleled relaxation. I highly recommend and wish I could give six stars.
