Belmond Hotel Monasterio in Cusco, Peru

Voted the Best Hotel in South America by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Belmond Hotel Monasterio deserves every accolade that comes its way. Built in the 16th century as a monastery on Inca foundations, this cloistered compound is located amid the historic splendor of Cusco, Peru. Most notably, the hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu. Much of the original architecture of Belmond Hotel Monasterio remains intact, paying homage to its original seminarian occupants. In keeping with its intended purpose, the rooms and suites feature a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, with a gallery of religious art gracing the walls. Because of the high elevation, 11,000 feet above sea level, many of the rooms are equipped with an oxygen supplementation system for your added comfort.

Discover each room, hallway, and passage at the hotel, where every undiscovered nook seems to hold legendary secrets. Abutting the main square and courtyard is Illariy Restaurant, a dining retreat adorned with original paintings and art that serves distinctive Peruvian and international cuisine. Morning meals are taken in El Tupay Restaurant, and mixologists at the Lobby Bar are skilled at creating refreshing libations with the shake of a wrist. And if you are in the mood for a more private experience, simply ring for room service round-the-clock. Just a few blocks from Cusco's central square with the cathedral and many prominent museums, Belmond Hotel Monasterio provides an idyllic place to discover everything the region has to offer.

We have stayed at the Monasterio twice in the past and were extremely impressed with the attentive service and this trip was no exception. Even though the setting is impressive and unique it was the exceptional attentive and courteous service that really made our stay feel like we were in a home away from home. Our concierge Jose was outstanding in every way. His gracious smile coupled with his genuine desire to be helpful made us feel like we were interacting with a old friend versus a hotel staff member. Even though Jose was often very busy with his duties he always took time to chat with us as though we were family. While all the staff we encountered excelled in making our stay a superb experience it was Jose that really stood out. Jose is a concierge of the highest quality but more importantly one can sense that he is a warm and caring individual. I cannot say enough to praise our experience staying at the Monasterio. As we saw and experienced many marvelous things on our trip to Peru and staying at the Monasterio was definitely one of our highlights, we hope to have the pleasure of returning in the near future. The Monastery is truly an amazing property. The room was very comfortable but the overall experience was really special. The building is lovely with spectacular common spaces at every turn. We especially enjoyed relaxing with a cocktail by the fire pit in the courtyard at night. The buffet breakfast was great. We had a lovely dinner one night in the main restaurant and another great dinner in the bar another evening. The hotel is centrally located and is a great home base to enjoy the sights in Cusco.

The hotel was beautiful! The grounds, rooms and location was breathtaking in the middle of Cusco. Service was excellent and we would like to acknowledge Ciro, our waiter for two mornings at the spectacular buffet. He was attentive, very pleasant, friendly and interesting to talk with. He is definitely an asset to this amazing hotel. We can't say enough about our short stay here!

A great trip- wonderful hotel and wonderful service especially from Darcy- the lobby bartender! They have oxygen in the rooms since the altitude is 10,000 feet! But a great colonial place close to the main Plaza. Peruvian people are so friendly.

This place is all about service. Everything was fantastic! The front desk did everything from arrange taxis, to picking up and storing our bags while we went to Machu Picchu and when we got back to the hotel the bags were already waiting in the room for us! The building its self is just beautiful, the breakfast and the food in general is fantastic! Loved the whole experience. Fantastic hotel!
