Belmond Hotel Monasterio in Cusco, Peru

Voted the Best Hotel in South America by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Belmond Hotel Monasterio deserves every accolade that comes its way. Built in the 16th century as a monastery on Inca foundations, this cloistered compound is located amid the historic splendor of Cusco, Peru. Most notably, the hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu. Much of the original architecture of Belmond Hotel Monasterio remains intact, paying homage to its original seminarian occupants. In keeping with its intended purpose, the rooms and suites feature a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, with a gallery of religious art gracing the walls. Because of the high elevation, 11,000 feet above sea level, many of the rooms are equipped with an oxygen supplementation system for your added comfort.

Discover each room, hallway, and passage at the hotel, where every undiscovered nook seems to hold legendary secrets. Abutting the main square and courtyard is Illariy Restaurant, a dining retreat adorned with original paintings and art that serves distinctive Peruvian and international cuisine. Morning meals are taken in El Tupay Restaurant, and mixologists at the Lobby Bar are skilled at creating refreshing libations with the shake of a wrist. And if you are in the mood for a more private experience, simply ring for room service round-the-clock. Just a few blocks from Cusco's central square with the cathedral and many prominent museums, Belmond Hotel Monasterio provides an idyllic place to discover everything the region has to offer.

Like stepping back in time, this is a very special hotel that I could not fault in any way. We sat out in the courtyard and were served breakfast listening to the sound of the monks singing being piped around the building. The ambience was relaxing and luxurious making you feel honoured to be there, such wonderful experience that will stay with me for a long time. We ate in the dinning room on the Opera evening the service was as perfect as the food. I was very sad to leave!

I recently returned from a Peruvian adventure including Machu Picchu with a group of 12 fabulous friends. Our final destination before returning to the US was the Belmond Hotel Monasterio in Cusco. I cannot say enough about the hotel and its outstanding staff. The highlight of our stay was our private celebratory party in the hotel's Illary Restaurant on our final night in Cusco. The room was beautiful, the food was exceptional and the staff went out of their way to make the evening special for us. And to top it all off, two opera singers joined the piano and flute for the music during our meal. Thank you Hotel Monasterio!

I stayed 2 nights here a couple weeks ago on a high-end tour. Everyone in the group was amazed at the place. Very few hotels in the world are as distinctive and luxurious. It occupies nearly a city block, most of which is devoted to manicured internal courtyards. The staff was outstanding as well.

This hotel exudes absolute charm. - we stayed 7 nights & it would rate as one of the best hotels we have ever visited The architecture & history are alone worth the visit. The whole place runs like a well oiled machine- full marks to the Belmond organization. Staff are friendly & efficient , service & enquiry calls are answered within 5 minutes with a polite phone call to advise a staff member is awaiting outside your door. Breakfasts were incredible in freshness, variety & quantity - top marks to Nelson for service. The concierge staff were equally organized & helpful , restaurant recommendations were spot on - equal high marks to Jeferson here. Our room was a one level suite overlooking the rear courtyard - spacious , quiet & superbly serviced. All the previous rave reviews are not exaggerated - this place is incredible Highly recommended

Definitely a unique hotel physically and once the fabulous breakfast and service is added in it will be something we will always remember. Located within walking distance to the main square and great restaurants and attractions, this hotel is so beautiful and historic that it took a lot to make us leave but Cusco definitely has things on offer to make you leave. We wished we had spent 3 days getting a feel for Cusco and then three more days just enjoying the beauty of our hotel. Outstanding in every possible way. The beds were like sleeping on a cloud with the beautiful linens. Every possible amenity was included in the room including excellent coffee and teas. Coca tea was available in the lobby in the morning and a herbal tea in the afternoons and evenings. Coca tea kept any hint of altitude sickness at bay.
