Belmond Hotel Monasterio in Cusco, Peru

Voted the Best Hotel in South America by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Belmond Hotel Monasterio deserves every accolade that comes its way. Built in the 16th century as a monastery on Inca foundations, this cloistered compound is located amid the historic splendor of Cusco, Peru. Most notably, the hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu. Much of the original architecture of Belmond Hotel Monasterio remains intact, paying homage to its original seminarian occupants. In keeping with its intended purpose, the rooms and suites feature a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, with a gallery of religious art gracing the walls. Because of the high elevation, 11,000 feet above sea level, many of the rooms are equipped with an oxygen supplementation system for your added comfort.

Discover each room, hallway, and passage at the hotel, where every undiscovered nook seems to hold legendary secrets. Abutting the main square and courtyard is Illariy Restaurant, a dining retreat adorned with original paintings and art that serves distinctive Peruvian and international cuisine. Morning meals are taken in El Tupay Restaurant, and mixologists at the Lobby Bar are skilled at creating refreshing libations with the shake of a wrist. And if you are in the mood for a more private experience, simply ring for room service round-the-clock. Just a few blocks from Cusco's central square with the cathedral and many prominent museums, Belmond Hotel Monasterio provides an idyllic place to discover everything the region has to offer.

The rooms were first class, the service was excellent, and the beds were comfortable. We had a nice little patio to relax, the staff was super helpful when I was sick, and the food that I did eat was top notch.

This is really a great hotel. Trust all the review that say nothing but great things. It's a beautiful building from the 1700's I think. Stone everywhere, old artwork. We were there celebrating a special occasion and they sent up a cake and wrote us a nice message. Would definitely stay here again if I'm back in cusco.

The service in this hotel is excellent. I travelled with a friend who got altitude sickness. The hotel was able to administer oxygen at 6 a.m. in the morning ... we called Room Service numerous times. They had to make the trip numerous times (with tea, breakfast, lunch ... more tea, oxygen tank) all within a very short space of time. Every time --- Carmen showed up at our door with a smile and a very kind word and disposition. When you're ill in a foreign country this type of attention and care from the hotel staff is a very real comfort. Other staff knew as well ... and I can't extend my gratitude for the hotel's care and attention enough. The hotel itself is historic and it is lovely to sit in their courtyard shaded by a 100+ year old tree ... fascinating. There have a well stocked hotel shop and Ilaria as well - with the most helpful staff. I cannot recommend this hotel enough --- it is an experience in itself.

After 2 nights in Sacred Valley & 1 night in Machu Picchu pueblo coming to the Belmond Monesterio was a real treat. Bathrooms & linens top notch of course & big buffet breakfast sets you right for a day of walking tours & sightseeing. Don't miss 100+ year old cedar tree in courtyard. Very nice staff too.

The staff at the hotel went above and beyond to meet my families every need. No request was to small. The desk was able to help with everything from restaurant recommendations, shopping and day trips. There was a very personal touch at this hotel, that I have not experienced at other hotels. I was always greeted with a smile and often greet by name. The hotel is gorgeous and it won't be my last visit.
