Belmond Hotel Monasterio in Cusco, Peru

Voted the Best Hotel in South America by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Belmond Hotel Monasterio deserves every accolade that comes its way. Built in the 16th century as a monastery on Inca foundations, this cloistered compound is located amid the historic splendor of Cusco, Peru. Most notably, the hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu. Much of the original architecture of Belmond Hotel Monasterio remains intact, paying homage to its original seminarian occupants. In keeping with its intended purpose, the rooms and suites feature a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, with a gallery of religious art gracing the walls. Because of the high elevation, 11,000 feet above sea level, many of the rooms are equipped with an oxygen supplementation system for your added comfort.

Discover each room, hallway, and passage at the hotel, where every undiscovered nook seems to hold legendary secrets. Abutting the main square and courtyard is Illariy Restaurant, a dining retreat adorned with original paintings and art that serves distinctive Peruvian and international cuisine. Morning meals are taken in El Tupay Restaurant, and mixologists at the Lobby Bar are skilled at creating refreshing libations with the shake of a wrist. And if you are in the mood for a more private experience, simply ring for room service round-the-clock. Just a few blocks from Cusco's central square with the cathedral and many prominent museums, Belmond Hotel Monasterio provides an idyllic place to discover everything the region has to offer.

All was great! The room was quiet and clean, the location very central, the staff and service helpful. Breakfast was one of the best, in the middle of the court with flowers and birds - you get spoiled. The hotel is an old monastery and has kept all the features to make you wonder how! There is even a beautiful chapel inside.

I can’t list enough adjectives to describe my experience at this peaceful lovely historic hotel. The staff is very attentive to all your needs. The rooms are impeccable. You are made to feel special here. My husband and I were sitting I. The lounge/bar and he ordered an Irish coffee. When it came and the waiter had left he said to me’I thought it would have milk in it’ the waiter was there in no time flat offering to bring him one the way he wanted it. Our stay there was relaxing. It named the monastery because it was a monastery. Please don’t think the rooms are spartan, they are not. I don’t think a monk ever slept in such a comfortable bed.

This is a beautiful hotel with lovely setting. The courtyards are very well kept and have colourful flowers. The rooms are spacious and nicely decorated. The only minus is that they do not have any particular view. Staff are friendly, breakfast is good and the church on the grounds is worth visiting. The location is perfect.

Located in a remodeled monastery and in the heart of old-town Cusco, Belmond Hotel Monasterio is every bit as great as it sounds. The inner courtyard provides a calm and serene escape from the smog-filled busy streets of Cusco. Breakfast and morning coffee in the courtyard can not be beaten! Our travels to Peru brought us to Hotel Monasterio twice. First we stayed at a junior suite with an amazing view of the the old town. Beware that junior suites are on two levels. So even though their total square footage might be larger than a superior room, each of the two rooms is smaller, with less usable space. In our case we, along with our luggage, were crammed on the lower floor, as the upper floor stayed empty. They are perfect, however, for two people not sharing a bed. Our second stay was in a one-bedroom suite which opened to a smaller, more private courtyard shared by just a handful of rooms. This is where you want to be! This one bedroom suite is as perfect as any hotel room can ever be! A beautiful bedroom, large living room, a massive bathroom, and a large patio on the courtyard. We found the restaurant to not measure up to the rest of the hotel. The food was ok and the wine list mediocre. They do have special events during dinner which do make it fun. For example one of our dinners was accompanied by a couple of opera singers who performed arias throughout the evening. It was fun! Pros - The inner courtyard, the service and the one-bedroom suites - The spa Cons - The junior suites - Wine list at the restaurant

Just amazing. On every front. Must stay here it's truly exceptional from the hot water bottles to Pisco sour lessons in your room. They make your stay special. We loved it. The Belmond line is truly special. Luxury, service and great appointments. On to Machu pichu on their train
