Dunton Hot Springs in Dolores, Colorado

Just across the mountain from Telluride, Dunton Hot Springs is a beautiful destination you will find difficult to ever leave. Located in a remote area of Dolores, Colorado and surrounded by the scent of Ponderosa pine, this rustic hideaway is situated near the "Four Corners" - the area where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona intersect in the wilderness. The area, formerly a gold rush town, is now an enclave of 400-plus acres surrounded by a pair of national forests in the San Juan Mountains. The area is primed for an array of activities, including hiking, snowshoeing, heli-skiing and so much more.

Dunton Hot Spring's guest cabins are the real thing - 19th-century hand-hewn log buildings once occupied by miners and meticulously restored by local and Native American craftsmen. Each is unique, yet all share incredible views, luxurious amenities and completely private settings. The resort's lounge, dining area, hot springs, bathhouse, and massage and yoga rooms are all just a short walk away. Dining features gourmet preparation and ingredients, as acclaimed chefs serve up fresh seafood and organic beef, lamb and produce.

My husband and I had the most spectacular experience at Dunton. The staff took exceptional care of us and staying in the romantic Dolores Cabin by the river was perfect. We were immediately greeted by three staff members who made sure we quickly had a drink in hand and then there was a botle of champagne waiting for us in our room. Everyone was so accommodating and the other guests were very friendly. It was a great mix of alone time and socializing. We fly fished, rock climbed, hiked and mountain biked. Everything was made so easy. It was perfect! My only concern is that it is very expensive.

In a 6 week holiday around the USA, our stay in Dunton was the highlight. It truely is one of the most special places to stay in the world. I've stayed other similar resorts and whilst they have differing strengths and weaknesses, Dunton was up there with the best. The setting and location are truely stunning. The attention to detail and effort creating the character of the resort was second to none. Each of the cabins are special and has its own unique history. They have been then respectfully converted to the 21st century with luxury details you just don't expect inside. The staff are all very friendly and professional (it is so nice to be in a place in the US where you don't have to tip every 10 mins) some were outstanding whilst others were just good. They were all across the details and nothing was every too hard. The brand new GM was getting her head around things, but clearly knew what she was doing in the luxury resort space. We were extremely thankful to her for upgrading us to a larger room to give us more space with our baby without us even asking. The food and drink selection were also consistently excellent. It's not typically our thing but the shared dining was a real highlight and a big part of the experience, with lots of great conversations with the other lovely guests. Whilst you share meals, you have lots of space and privacy around the resort which works well. There is lots to do around the Dunton site. In particular, the hot springs are very special. I felt more relaxed after 2 nights at Dunton than the 4 weeks of holidays I'd had before it. 2 nights was the bare minimum you would want to stay here. I considered extending it to a 3rd and driving 8 hrs in a day to make it to Denver for a flight, just to have one more night there. I can't recommend staying at Dunton enough and one day I'd love to return.

We had heard about Dunton Hot Springs for years and finally had a chance to visit. Our stay exceed all expectations!!! Fabulous setting, over the top food, wonderful hot springs and hike! Best part was the "family style" dinning where we ate with the rest of the guests and had wonderful discussions.
