Amanera in Dominican Republic

Sitting on the north coast of the serene Dominican Republic, Amanera lies between the two small villages of Río San Juan and Cabrera. Further to the west lies the town of Cabarete, one of the world’s top-rated windsurfing and kiteboarding destinations, while eastward is the natural deep-water port of Samana, famous for the humpback whales that roam its warm waters during winter. Ocean meets abundant tropical jungle courtesy of the uninterrupted golden sands of Playa Grande. Watersports including kayaking and kiteboarding take place in front of a dramatic mountainous background. The Dominican Republic’s cultural riches are within easy reach, including colonial architecture and quaint fishing villages, while the resort is home to one of the premier Caribbean golf courses.

Amanera’s Casitas dot the lush coastline with unobstructed ocean views. Overhanging eaves shade expansive terraces with outdoor dining and lounging areas, while inside, the floor-to-ceiling glass doors lead to rooms specially positioned to maximise views. All Casitas feature lofty ceilings and warm wooden finishes, while a selection offer private swimming pools. Our dining facilities are open to guests and non-residents. The Restaurant, specializing in fresh, organic dishes, features a terrace overlooking the uninterrupted mile-long golden strand of Playa Grande beach. Floor-to-ceiling windows ensure expansive views from indoors, and the second-storey bar is the perfect spot for an aperitif. Other dining options include Club de Playa, set on the beach, and the Clubhouse restaurant at Playa Grande Golf Course. Inspired by the shamanic healing traditions of the Dominican Republic, spa therapies use locally grown plants and herbs, as well as the Aman range of all-natural products. Massages, facials, scrubs and wraps join signature Spa Journeys as part of a holistic approach to wellbeing.

This was our third visit to an Aman Resort (having previously stayed at Amanyara and Amanpuri). We loved Amanera! Once again, Aman comes through for extremely high quality service and an atmosphere of serene tranquility. At Amanera, Rey did an amazing job of making sure we met the chef, Antonio, and took care of all the finer details of our stay. Anything we needed, Rey addressed it for us. Antonio, the head chef, went out of his way to make us feel special. He prepared special meals for us 4 nights in a row – we said, “surprise us”, and he did! We also had the pleasure of meeting Xavier, the general manager, near the end of our stay. We found him to be very attentive, knowledgeable, and extremely professional. We plan to return to Amanera in the future!!

Dear Amanera Family We wanted to drop in a quick note to say "muchas gracias" for an absolutely amazing stay at the gorgeous Amanera resort! We loved how hospitality industry is truly a small, yet connected world. A special thank you to General Manager, Xavier for his time and company! A big thank you is also extended to the management team, including Laura and Caroline. Our expectations were blown away with the attentiveness and care to our requests. Thank you to your Housekeeping team - that magical "behind the scenes" team is really impressive! It was a delight to walk into our Casita every evening to see the turn-down amenities. Fioridelle, the Restaurant Manager handled every detail around the birthday dinner flawlessly. I loved how she was always readily available, both on email and in person. Rey, the F&B Manager was helpful and knowledgeable with the thoughtful wine recommendations. The suggestions paired nicely with our meals every evening, including Nama's pop-up concept. Ruperto, the server was a sheer delight to speak with. Each of our breakfasts were handled with enthusiasm and care. Even on our early morning diving excursion, Ruperto arranged a set of pastries and sandwiches as a take-away in a matter of minutes with out any delay. Flora, the Reservations Manager was joy to coordinate our stay with. She definitely helped build up the anticipation and excitement even more. Nicolas from Front Office was very courteous to arrange the Eco Hike with Antonio, and the local dinner at Babunuco, despite the multiple schedule changes. The cigar experience was culturally engaging, with Alberto being such a friendly and funny host. The birthday dinner was a major highlight and will be forever remembered. The venue, the table set-up and the stunning panoramic views were spectacular! The BBQ "surf and turf" was an outstanding menu and delicious. Thank you for the recommendations! The cake arrangement was much appreciated, as we were really blown away with details of the evening, even the collectible Lego pieces. We loved the live guitarist and singers, such a lovely local touch. The whole evening went off beautifully. I guess the moment was too perfect to pass up, that my love sneakingly planned to take over the evening with his own surprise. With the evening playing out perfectly, he took his birthday moment to make it extra special, by proposing to me. Please share our thanks also with everyone else we were not able to mention by name. It was truly a spectacular experience, a first of its kind with the Aman brand. As much as it was difficult to say good-bye, we will fondly remember the hospitality, the kindness and friendship that were created on each and every day of our visit by your talented staff and colleagues. We look forward to returning back to the resort. PS. We rented a car, the drive to the resort from Puerta Plata Airport is about 1.5 hrs. The drive was scenic and had good roads. Its quaint to pass through the smaller local towns and country side. Kind regards, H & G

A couple of months ago we decided to try the facilities of Amanera, in Rio San Juan The experience was incredible, from the elegance of the design of each one of the details of the construction of the club house, to the villas, the restaurant, the bar ...... The perception of style and luxury is permanent in all aspects of the operation, the polite service, the delicacy of details We were enjoying some cocktails in the evening with Playa Grande in front of our eyes, in the hanging terrace with a permanent water mirror fruit of the most avant-garde design The whole concept is a luxury to the añcance of a few, but it is worth experimenting

We stayed at Amanera for eight nights during March. We were at a Bay View Pool Casita (number 4) and it was perched literally just above the beach club. Overall we had an absolutely amazing time and the hotel went out of their way to make sure everything was just perfect. Staff are very friendly and outgoing and our only comment would be with regards to the front desk. When calling to make requests its a bit of a hit and miss sometimes they get it and sometimes they don’t. We found it is best to come and speak to them in person. The casita itself is beautifully laid out and appointed. It is very comfortable and has everything one would expect in an Aman and more. The only thing the Casita could do with is a bit more privacy. Vegetation is setting in well but there is still a fair amount of over looking between the Casita’s. In addition as our Casita was located just above the beach club the kitchen extraction fans start at about 8am and run for the majority of the day. This creates a mechanical background noise that sometimes spoils the peacefulness of the crashing waves. Other then that the Casita’s are faultless. Room servicing was also very good although we did bump into the turn down staff a couple of evenings. This is fairly uncommon in Aman as usually they appear and disappear by magic so we were either eating our dinners too fast or they didn’t get straight into our room as soon as we left. There was also a couple of cases of forgotten replenishment of coffee capsules but overall very good. We dined both in the room, at the beach club and in the main restaurant for both lunch and dinner. Overall food quality is superb with plenty of fresh local fish and produce being an absolute delight. There are wide menu options at all venues even when staying for eight nights and with Aman nothing is too difficult so we did ask for off menu items on a couple of occasions. The location of the resort itself is phenomenal. The Playa Granda beach is vast as the name suggests and it is really nice to stroll down it before sunset. Whilst we are not golfers my wife did use the golf course for her morning runs and overall the golf course is vast and gorgeous. We made extensive use of the SPA and really couldn’t fault it. Service was friendly and the treatment quality was superb. The only slight down point is that the SPA is located much further down the golf course so it is a 10 minute buggy ride from the Casita and it appears to have been retro fitted into what was an existing colonial style villa. This is not in line with the rest of the design of the resort and also the SPA Showers / Toilets as a result don’t work particularly well. It is our understanding however that this is a medium term measure and a purpose built Aman spa will be built in due course. Nonetheless all the treatments were professionally conducted and very soothing for mind and soul. We took advantage of the many optional activities that the hotel offers and did the Ceviche cooking class, the Rum Tasting session, drinks by sunset on the golf course, candelit dinner on the beach as well as a 20km bike ride in the mountains with a guide. All were great fun and we left us with wonderful memories. The Amanera Old Fashioned- one of the hotels signature drinks is a must try. The only area requiring further improvement is the beach and beach club. It is still all a bit rough in so far that there is no adult fresh water pool to dunk into and there are no sun loungers on hard surfaces - they are all on the sand. If they mimicked the beach club at Amanzoe in Greece then it would be an outright winner. The one thing to note is this place is not ideal for swimming in the sea. The current is very strong and the waves are generally rather large and aggressive from 10am till 4pm. If you are an intermediate surfer you probably wouldn’t mind it but a couple of times the sheer force of the current really took us by surprise. If the hotel built a man made sea breaker maybe a calmer bay for swimming would form but as things stand this is not the place for those who want to be in salty water all day. Our concluding impression was that this is a gem in the making. In many aspects it is 100% there and Aman shines through and through. In other areas there are room for improvement and issues to iron out but overall for a resort that has only been open for 18 months they have the ingredients here for an incredible recipe which is just starting to take shape. We would definitely be coming back and are very jealous of those living in NYC and Miami and can fly into POP so easily. Our recommendation is go and try for yourselves- you won’t be disappointed

After a visit to Amanzoe (Greece) last July we were totally hooked on Aman. Last month we visited Amanera (Dominican Republic) after a week in Cuba. Amanera doesn't disappoint, it is pure Aman. This property is excellent and the staff are superb. We stayed in a Pool Casita which is worth spending the extra for the private pool, which is large enough for swimming some laps. The Casita is beautifully furnished and very large with wonderful views of the beach and ocean. The bathroom has 2 full sized vanities, a large shower, separate loo, and a bath large enough for 2 overlooking a private garden. The mini bar is complimentary (except for wine) and includes a Nespresso. Internet is free and very fast. There's a separate living room and bedroom, and a large walk in robe with plenty of room for a lot of clothes and luggage. The Casita seemed to be serviced every time we left it, some days 3 times. That's a luxury! There are two restaurants, one in the main resort building and one at the Pool Club. Both were fantastic. One day we were at the Pool Club for lunch and wanted coconut water - so a coconut was cut from a nearby tree, the top cut off, and there we had our coconut water. The F&B Manager, Graziano is from Puglia in Italy and has trained his crew exceptionally well. The staff are amazing and the food is perfection. There's a great international wine list. I am coeliac and require gluten free, which wasn't a problem. There was always freshly baked GF bread (usually 3 types) and anything could be modified. I had one of the best pizzas and an amazing cheeseburger. We were surprised by a private dinner in the Cigar Room on our final night which was amazing. The room was beautifully decorated with candles and the table was set and decorated with the most beautiful shell display which must have taken Oliver hours to do. Thank you Graziano and Oliver. Drinks are amazing at the Bar with very unique cocktails (Graziano has done his research all over the world and used his experience to inspire Amanera's cocktail list). Hiro and Tony are the best bartenders. Two of our favourites were the Dominican Martini and an Old Fashioned made with rum. Best enjoyed with one of Amanera's fine cigars. The spa is superb, of course Aman is renowned for it's spas. The ambience is as you would expect from a high luxury spa and the treatments are superb, however, it's the attention to detail and the fine touches which stand out from the rest. Karina came from the Bel Air Hotel in Beverly HIlls recently and manages the Spa. Her husband Xavier is Amanera's GM. The golf course, Playa Grande is next door and my husband enjoyed a game. Thank you Amanera for a wonderful week, great memories, we will return.
