Reviews for The Gibson Hotel

What happened to the Gibson in the last 9 years?

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

I raved about the Gibson to my daughter after a 60th birthday trip with my Husband 9 years ago, so imagine my disappointment when on arrival to check in after midday following the drive up from Tipperary to be told the room was not ready, fair enough we'll do it later as my daughter had a cocktail lesson experience awaiting her at the blind pig curtesy of her brother for a birthday present. That was Fabulous! We had a meal after at Boeuf & Coq which was mouth watering, We then went to see Woman on the verge of HRT at the Gaiety that was hilarious! We then had the long walk back to the Gibson no big deal but it was after a long day. We were met by Burly gentlemen on the door as 3 arena had just kicked out fortunately one of the lads had my name on a list so we could get in, I finally checked in exhausted and couldn't wait to kick of the boots and relax... When we walked into room the most obvious thing was there was just a double bed? I had booked a superior twin room, I was upset to say the least, I phoned down to reception who explained that 3 of the twin rooms were out of action and unfortunately had nothing else to offer, I was getting cross by this time, it wasn't even a king sized bed!! What if the second person was a work colleague or my 40 year old son? would they expect us to just share the same bed? Thomas the night Manager realised then that it was not right at all so offered some good will money off and my car parking fee, so I decided that would do as I was just way too tired to say any more. A couple more items then come to light like the marks on the bedding so we slept on top and just had the counterpane over us and no tissue in the bathroom. Breakfast the next morning was nice I did miss not having a fried egg though, the toaster setting needs tweaking as it just warmed the bread on round one and then incinerated it on the second, what also was missing was a tray, you were going up and back to get your bits last time I looked I only had one pair of hands. When checking out the next day the receptionist had been alerted by Thomas and they indeed waived the breakfast and the parking I asked the lady do I just put the card in the machine at the barrier and she said yes, but the Gibson wasn't finished with us yet, the blooming barrier did not go up and I was sitting there like a plum till eventually the guy confirmed that it was paid and let us finally escape the Gibson.

The Gibson, tired and shabby in places.

We stayed while attending a concert at the 3 arena and chose the hotel due to its close proximity to the venue. The place is really strangely laid out, upon entering you are greeted by a set of escalators one of which was out of order and no staff in sight. No sign post to a lift. When you eventually arrive at the reception area (3 flights of escalators up) the area is so dark and unwelcoming, for a 4 star hotel and the premium we paid due to it being a concert night we were expecting much more. So unfortunately our first impression wasn’t great! The staff member who checked us in was lovely and we were given our room key. The room was ok, beds good and sheets crisp and clean, but the room has seen better days, a clump of dust and hair rolled out when we moved a chair to watch the TV. There was no info on the hotel at all in the room, no details about the restaurant etc also no extras like shower cap. The bathroom was tired, tiles with black mould in the shower and the floor tiles were grubby and discoloured. Cooked breakfast the next morning wasn’t good, eggs were awful and grilled tomato inedible, but the continental selection looked much better, again restaurant staff were lovely and efficient. There are other hotels close by so even though a bit of a walk is required after a concert I’d explore one of the others the next time.

Great experience, stayed overnight in a fab contemporary room, food at breakfast was amazing and the room we used for our event was brilliant. I have to give a special mention to Rafael who was part of the event’s team, yet again he was so helpful to our team onsite at the event. I’d be happy to recommend the Gibson Hotel.

Good The staff were good, and allowed a change of room due to adjoining room noise. Note, they were not particularly loud so the sound insulation is not great. The bed was comfortable. There were two bottles of water in the fridge. The price of a weekend was extremely competitive - cheaper than some hostels. Lots of space in the room compared to other city centre hotels in Europe. Bad The bathroom has a frosted glass door and window into the main bedroom area. Result: anytime your partner uses the bathroom you will be disturbed - style over substance decision. Another absurd decision was to have no headboard but have the bed 45cm (18 inches) from the wall. Result: you must lie down as your head will not be supported. Adjoining room noise is significant and was too much for me so I asked to move 30m after check in, which was accommodated. A non-adjoining room was better for noise. Likes Our room had opening windows with a pleasant view of foliage/plants. The room was generally good for storage and layout. Opposite a tram stop (the terminus) to get into the central area. Gripes The shower pressure and temperature was variable.
