Disappointed this time

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 9 hours ago

My husband and myself have stayed in the Portmarnock hotel on several occasions. This time we were very disappointed . We arrived at check in at 2pm to be greeted by Tiago who said your room isn’t ready as check in isn’t until 4pm as stated in our terms and conditions. We had no problem with this but thought he could have greeted us with. “You’re welcome to our hotel” or “ had you a nice journey”, etc..!! . When we got to our room it looked a bit on the shabby side. The chair was stained and the headboard all worn. There was no air/con only a fan and no coffee machine as most 4* hotels have now just a kettle. The bathroom was clean but no walk in shower just a shower over the bath which isn’t great when your not as agile as you used to be. I think this is just a luck of the draw though. It’s time for the rooms to get a bit of a refurbishment I think. The outside also is getting tired looking, the back of the hotel overlooking the outside bar area needs a lick of paint and the gardens don’t seem as well maintained as previously. The bar also has got grubby, there were crumbs of food under one of the tables and never noticed by the staff, who appear not very well trained. In fact we had to move tables as there was a very bad smell coming off our table. I know it was very busy on that particular day but the service was also very slow and there was enough staff on duty. Breakfast wasn’t a relaxing experience, it was very busy and we were cramped into a table which my husband had difficulty getting in and out off because of a pole behind his chair. We asked for toast and it came out white and barely warm, so I kindly asked the supervisor if she would re-toast it, well I’m still waiting on it. Never once were we asked if we needed any top up of tea or coffee. The second morning wasn’t as bad but staff can’t cope when busy at all. On check out we got Tiago again and never asked how our stay was at all just handed us our invoice and goodbye. The only person was Brian, the Concierge, who greeted us with a big smile and he took my luggage down the steps at the front door and said he hoped we had a lovely time and will be back. Brian you should be on the front desk at check in!!!! I don’t like writing this review as I’ve always looked forward to staying at the Portmarnock hotel but will be hesitant to do so again unless there will be some improvement in the near future.

The only real 4 stars was the price

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 11 hours ago

After having booked 9 months in advance,I was there with three friends for a golf vacation. We were given 4 rooms of different type, two of them of a standard far below any normal expectation in a 4 star hotel. The official excuse was “organisational issues” for hosting a larger group of golfers !!! Breakfast choice typical of a B & B and dinner served (when space and time available…) in the hotel pub. I wonder on what base can a structure receive 4 stars rating in Ireland.

The hotel is nice and the rooms very spacious. However staff need alot of training. We visited with our 3 year old and was greeted at reception with oh I see you booked for 2 but there are 3(I booked for 3 via reservations as they asked if we needed a cot). In the bar, we ordered drinks and crisps...twice. both times crisps were forgotten. On another account a soda was left on our table which we didn't order. We notified the waitress but still the bill at the end had this additional soda. Breakfast was awful. We were down at 950am. Still 40 mins till it finished. There was only a few slices of bacon, 2 pieces of black pudding, a few sausages which were stuck to the pot. They ran out of soda bread, no beans, definitely not 4 star standard.

Fantastic massage

I recently had a deep tissue massage with Buugie in the hotel spa and it was one of the best massages I have ever had. She is incredibly knowledgeable and really helped my back pain. I couldn't recommend her highly enough.

Blissful quiet Spa - truly relaxing

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

Visited the spa for a massage. Therapist (Buugie) was very knowledgeable and worked her magic. Excellent de-stress massage. Lovely surroundings. Quiet & relaxing spa. All the staff were friendly and welcoming in a genuine manner (Helen). Nice little touches too, plenty of water and the relaxing beds are heated for extra comfort. Definitely a returning happy customer.
