L'Albereta in Erbusco (Brescia), Italy

The Albereta welcomes you to a refined setting, which is marked by good taste: antique-style lounges and terraces with extraordinary vistas of Lake Iseo, between the hills and vineyards of Franciacorta. From the first coffee in the morning to the last glass in the evening, the Albereta reinterprets the bistro tradition in an Italian way, whilst the new restaurant highlights the cuisine of yesteryear. Add to this the magic of the opening ceiling of your room to gaze up at the stars from the comfort of your bed and an exclusive visit to the family cellars at Bellavista and Contadi Castaldi. Finally the Albereta is a place dedicated to health and beauty thanks to its Medical Spa Espace Vitalité Henri Chenot.

Lost in the middle of ancient grounds standing among the vineyards of Franciacorta, an area famous for its sparkling wines, L'Albereta enjoys an enchanting landscape dominated by Lake Iseo. A private villa for many years, L'Albereta, which is now owned by the family of Carmen Moretti de Rosa, has 57 extremely refined suites and bedrooms: all different from each other. They each have a delightful outdoor private area. Just a few steps from the Bellavista family cellar, L'Albereta has major assets to attract gourmets, since it offers a family bistro, the VistaLago, and a gourmet restaurant, the LeoneFelice. Chef Fabio Abbattista runs the kitchens of both establishments. But L'Albereta is the ideal retreat for those wishing to take care of their health and well-being. The Espace Chenot Health Wellness SPA offers a rigorous detox method, combined with innovative diagnostic tests. It is one the most advanced detox and anti-ageing skincare programmes in the world.

I stayed here for a business event. First impressions count and the distracted reception staff that 'greeted' me on my arrival, set the tone for the whole stay to be honest. I was given room 50 at the farthest end of the hotel, accessed by LOTS of stairs, the grand finale being a steep flight inside the room itself. The room was cramped and kind of dark, even though it was a gloriously sunny day outside and only 3pm when I arrived. I could have lived with that as I was tired after a four hour drive, and not in the mood for being fussy, but the room was ridiculously warm as it was practically under the rafters of the highest part of the building (on a day where outside temperatures were only (it was about 21 degrees centigrade outside) I asked reception if it would be possible to change to another room, as I could foresee it being difficult to sleep there. Worst decision of the week. After some face pulling and having to ask the "responsabile", the receptionist told me they had another room for me. The new room (48) was directly underneath the first one (in fact the two rooms share a door - odd set up); it was only mildly cooler than the other room, half the size and even darker. Two sofas occupy this small room; one had been made up into a bed. Narrow, hard bed, laying parallel to the wall in a hot room...... it wasn't good and certainly not worthy of what my company paid for me to stay here. Every other member of my party told me that their room was beautiful, and that perhaps I should ask to change again. Once bitten, twice shy - I could only imagine I'd end up sleeping in the shed if I asked to change again. So I suffered it for the three night duration of my stay. The bathroom was tiny - no bath, and a very shoddy shower (had to do the spinning around to get wet thing due to the fixed shower head which soaks the whole bathroom if you don't point it the right way) Bar staff stand offish... restaurant food ok, but nothing special by Italian standards. It took two reminders and a 15 minute wait for my luggage to be brought down to my car.... I would have taken it myself, but the sheer number of stairs encountered on the trek between my room and the carpark meant that for once, I made use of the service offered. It would be wise not to use the carpark located below the lobby - all spaces are overhung by mature trees and you can only imagine the state of your car after three days parked underneath a tree..... No coffee machine in the room - which is a pain because breakfast isn't served until 7:30, so if you are up before then and want a coffee, you are out of luck. Absolutely nothing. If you're hungry - well, there's always the minibar Redeeming qualities? The toiletries are nice. Guess the hotel was pretty clean. Oh, and the two people who brought breakfast to my room. They were lovely - very cheery, friendly and polite. Nothing like any other member of staff I encountered there! The setting is very nice, but not special. There are locations as beautiful as this all over Italy. And friendlier, better value hotels.

The room was so welcoming with a beautiful candle and inspirational note. The view from the bistro was gorgeous and waitstaff was great. I was disappointed in the front desk staff, I had called to see if we could possible change our reservation to the next day due to a train crash on our trip from Zurich to Rovato and was told no there were no rooms for the next day. On the web it showed rooms still available for the next night. So we had to take a taxi for $250 so that we would not lose our reservation. We asked for a late check out due to our late arrival and were told no again because rooms were filled. Once again, the web showed availabiltiy. Early morning went to see the spa and what services were available, went to the area that I thought was the spa because everyone was sitting in their robes drinking coffee and the gentlemen their snapped at me "This is not the spa!" Then we decided to go to a place that was listed in their suggestion booklet, to ride horses in a vinyard, and was told that no one in 10 years had ever gone there and they didn't want to give us the phone number until I had to ask three times. Finally we asked to get a cab to the next hotel and we were told no cabs just private cars. Maybe there was a communication problem but it seemed everything we asked the answer was No. On a good note...the property was gorgeous, everything you would love to see when envisioning Italy. Right in the middle of a vinyard, views and landscape gorgeous! Rooms were pretty, very clean and inviting. Food was amazing.

The front desk and restaurant waiters are very good, friendly and helpful. The personnel cleaning and looking after the bedrooms should be trained better. The selection of foods offered could be enhanced.

From the room we could hear almost 24/7 the noise of the kitchen, additionally around 11 pm we couldn’t sleep because of the noise made by the waiters (staff) drinking alcohol and shouting behind an emergency door by the hallway in a way all the rooms around couldn’t sleep neither. The following day, the hotel "forgot" to bring our (previously ordered) breakfast into the room the reaction was a simple "we are sorry, we forgot" and we still had to pay for it 23 hours later... To end our unexpected weekend scape, as soon as we woke up one member of the hotel management team told us the spa was not available in the mornings for the clients leaving that same day... (on top of that it was only 11 am). Spending some time in the Spa was one of the main reasons why we went to the hotel though...after that, the hotel director apologized for the apparently wrong given information about the spa information “error” simply (again) with a "sorry".

We loved every minute and every aspect of our stay. We booked through Amex program, and from the reservation stage we felt an extraordinary attention and hospitability on the part of hotel staff, which continued throughout our stay. Everything is so indulging, everyone is so courteous, attention is paid to every detail to make your stay enjoyable. We experienced the wonderful Chenot Spa and enjoyed it as well. We also greatly enjoyed a complementary private visit at Contadino winery, which belongs to the hotel owner as well. My spouse even received a surprise Chenot birthday gift, which waited for him on our bed! It's a beautifully designed hotel, with warm and chic atmosphere. Highly recommended.
