You know how when you order a room online, pay for it, then get there and its usually not what you expected in that it's way smaller or a lesser quality than they advertised on their site? Well, the Essex Culinary Resort & Spa went the other way with it. I was trying to keep my expectations low, from previous experience, but I was blown away with what we saw and got when we arrived. The studio rooms are cozy and the perfect amount of space for a couple. The Spa center was of quality and really oozed high society treatment, and the culinary class was a valuable experience I won't soon forget. The property is quintessential Vermont complete with a vegetable garden they use as a food source, their own goats and chickens, and a back patio eating area attached to the onsite restaurant The Tavern, which at night is glowing with lights and drowned in the sounds of live music. I highly recommend it and am already planning my next visit. Thanks.

My husband and I stayed at the Essex for our 30th wedding anniversary August, 2017. We booked a "luxury room" well in advance for a week. (Looks so great on-line). We checked in at the front desk and were told that our room was in The Manor. There are 3 separate buildings. Our room was very dirty---dirty and stained carpet, crushed cereal on the floor, sticky and unclean table tops, counter surfaces. Hair in the bathroom and the floor was dirty. (The housekeeping staff had left an envelope for tipping ?) We called the front desk -- expecting to be assigned to another room that was clean. Their response was to send over a housekeeper and we can show her what we wanted cleaned. Really? So for the next hour we could point out all of these things and watch her vacuum. The room itself was very old and the shower had mildew and stains. No follow up from staff at all during our 5 night stay. No apology either. The main building has a nice lobby where there is coffee apparently but you need to go outside if you happen to be in the Manor. The room had no warmth--not even artificial flower center piece on the table. It was not quaint or inviting--old and cold. We had a kitchenette but no towel or dishcloth to use, no spoons, 2 bowls---so you pay for a kitchenette but need to be creative to actually use it. Our coffee was not stocked after the first day for the coffee maker. No vacuuming either. The outdoor grounds are beautiful and the restaurants were good. While you may want to visit here for a meal, I would definitely not recommend staying here.

I regret that we only had one night to stay here. Had we known how awesome it was, we would have adjusted our schedules to stay longer. I was especially interested in the cooking classes they offered.

The Essex is an older spa resort but it's well worth a visit. The amenities are excellent and the staff is very friendly. My room was comfy and I appreciate their green approach to housekeeping. The spa is simply wonderful and exceeded my expectations.

This is our second time at the Essex , last time we loved the resort, but this time it was very dissatisfied. Make sure to ask if there is a wedding during your stay. Our room was not being cleaned due to a "short stuff and because if the wedding" . There was a vomite smell on one of the blankets. On Saturday and Sunday the place was noisy and not relaxing. Last time we got white robes and white flip flops, 2 bottles of water as expected from a spa. unfortantly not this time. We found on our floor a tray with leftover food more than one day, till we notified the manager. Amanda the manager was very nice but it was to little and still very expensive and not relaxing.
