About the Hotel

Arriving at Summer Lodge Country House Hotel, Restaurant and Spa feels like stepping into a Thomas Hardy novel. That might be because the author is in its bones: An architect by profession, Hardy helped his friend, the 6th Earl of Ilchester, draw up the plans for the addition to the 18th century dower house. You won’t want to miss traditional afternoon tea, served daily in the glass-walled conservatory or drawing room and accompanied by homemade scones, strawberry jam and Dorset clotted cream. For an even more quintessential English experience, don a pair of Wellies and go for a romp through the adjacent 600-acre deer park (or if you’re artistically inclined, the lodge will set you up with painting supplies to capture the beauty of the idyllic landscape).

Superb country hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing 3 night stay at Summer Lodge recently. It’s an oasis of tranquility with traditional service in the centre of a quaint village. It’s a great base for touring the beautiful Dorset coast and countryside. As you would expect breakfast was excellent as were the homemade scones enjoyed with tea in the drawing room, homemade shortbread in our bedroom and dinner in the restaurant was also excellent. Highly recommended if you are looking for somewhere special to stay.

A great team in all areas of an excellent hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

If what you like is a traditional English country hotel with professional and attentive staff, excellent food, wonderfully comfortable rooms, all set in the middle of a near perfect Dorset village, then Summer Lodge should be for you. Our two night stay could not be faulted, with the newer members of staff as well as the older ones clearly being well trained: this is undoubtedly a properly managed hotel. The spa and pool are also most enjoyable, with equally friendly and helpful staff on hand. Furthermore, Housekeeping is of a very high standard, with our room being spotlessly clean and beautifully presented. Breakfasts were also excellent, both evening meals were interesting and superbly presented and our stay culminated with a full afternoon tea, both savoury as well as sweet, which was brilliant! We would like to thank the staff for their friendly professionalism, from reception to bar and waiting, with many lovely individual touches, which partly explain why this is a such an impressive hotel. So many staff had a great sense of humour, which is always a good sign! Highly recommended.

Good but could be better

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We stayed at Summer Lodge for several days in March 2024. The room accommodation was of a high standard - a very comfortable super king bed in a spacious bedroom and a large bathroom with tub and inclusive shower. The bar area was very cosy with 2 log fires and ample seating. The quality of the breakfast was good. It was a pity however that apart from one change the dinner menu was the same each night which was surprising when you were staying in an establishment that charges high London prices for dining. For a change we did dine at the Acorn Inn in the village that is owned by the same group as the hotel. The prawn starter was so unbelievably hot that we could not try to eat them for 15 minutes and of course they were overcooked. I had a lovely well cooked sirloin steak but it was just a pity that the french fries were covered in truffle oil and cheese. Taste overkill. It was also a pity that the IPA beer was served ice cold which rather spoilt it. Would we go back - probably not.

A lovely 3 day break in Dorset

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

Just returned from a 3 day break . This is a lovely hotel with beautiful gardens in the pretty little village of Evershot. The hotel is immaculate with a nice lounge with a log burning fire and a cosy little bar with lots of charator. We ate once in the fine dining, once at their Acorn Inn a few hundred yards from the hotel and once in the conservatory restaurant all three were very good with the Inn being slight cheaper. We did not use the spa. We had a great break and the staff were all very friendly and professional .

AN AMAZING 60th BIRTHDAY TREAT

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

Well what can I say?? My friend treated me to an overnight stay here for my 60th birthday and what a treat it was. It’s a beautiful place to visit and the staff here all go above and beyond to help. Special shout out to Justin and Charis in the dining rooms. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a delightful 3 course lunch and in the evening a more casual snack which was lovely too. Breakfast was plentiful too, continental and cooked, who could ask for more. I felt like Queen 🐝 while I was here and I would certainly love to go again sometime. The grounds here too are fabulous. The management should be proud of their staff, great ambassadors for this establishment. Keep up the good work, it’s a 60th birthday I will remember for the rest of my life ❤️
